Indian Standard
SPECIFICATION FOR FUEL OIL FOR USE IN MARINE DIESEL ENGINES
0. F O R E W O R D 0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 2 December 1985, after the draft finalized by the Petroleum Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Petroleum, Coal and Related Products Division Council. 0.2 The large majority of merchant ships today are fitted with diesel engine propulsion plants. The engines are either of the medium speed type operating at about 350 rpm or of the slow speed crosshead design operated at between 100 to 150 r/m. The engine plants are between 5 000 to 40 000 bhp depending on the size of the ship. 0.3 Residual fuel used in marine diesel engines has to be effectively treated and preheated before admission to the fuel pumps and nozzles of the diesel engine. The treatment essentially consists of the following stages: a) Settling or decanting of the water from the fuel in a settling tank at a temperature of 55 to 60C; b) Single stage or double stage separation in centrifugal separators to remove water, sludge, grit and solid contaminants; c) Preheating to a suitable temperature to reduce the viscosity to 10 to 15 mm2/s before injection; and d) Final filtration in a 50 m hot filter. 0.4 The present Indian Standard specifications for fuel oils (IS : 1593-1982) had mentioned the following characteristics, namely, flash point, viscosity, gross calorific value, water content, ash, sulphur and sediment percentage which are not adequate for use in marine industry. The Committee therefore, felt that the parameters, namely, pour point, carbon residue, vanadium and aluminium content should also be specified as these are gaining in importance as they affect combustion and wear and tear of engine parts. 0.5 This edition 1.1 incorporates Amendment No. 1 (July 2004). Side bar indicates modification of the text as the result of incorporation of the amendment. 3

IS : 11488 - 1985 0.6 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements and the methods of sampling and test for fuel oil for use in marine diesel engines. 2. GRADES 2.1 The material shall be of the following three grades depending on kinematic viscosity: i) Grade (Residual Marine) RM 25, ii) Grade (Residual Marine) RM 35, and iii) Grade (Residual Marine) RM 45. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 General The material shall be hydrocarbon oils derived from petroleum or shale. This, however, shall not preclude the incorporation of small amounts of additives of hydrocarbon or non-hydrocarbon origin intended to improve ignition, combustion or other characteristics. 3.1.1 The material shall be free from grit and other foreign impurities. 3.2 The material shall also comply with the requirements prescribed in Table 1, when tested according to the appropriate methods prescribed under P series of IS : 1448. Reference to the relevant test method (P :) is given in col 6 of Table 1. 4. PACKING AND MARKING 4.1 Packing The material shall be supplied in suitable containers as agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier, and subject to the provisions of Red Tariff No. 18 rules and rates for the conveyance by rail of explosives and other dangerous goods, issued by the Indian Railways Conference Association, with any alterations made thereafter.
*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ). Methods of test for petroleum and its products.

NOTE The use of the ISI Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the Indian Standards Institution (Certification Marks) Act and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The ISI Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by ISI and operated by the producer. ISI marked products are also continuously checked by ISI for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the ISI Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.

5. SAMPLING 5.1 Representative samples of the material shall be drawn as prescribed in IS : 1447-1966*. 5.2 All the requirements given in this specification shall be tested on the composite sample. 5.3 The lot shall be declared as conforming to the requirements of this specification if all the test results on the composite sample meet the corresponding specification requirements.
