International School on Atmospheric Aerosol Physics, Measurement, and Sampling

La Paz, Bolivia, June 26 July 3, 2013

Universidad Mayor de San Andrs

Laboratorio de Fsica de la Atmsfera IIF -UMSA

This international school course will provide the student a thorough overview of atmospheric aerosol measurements including: definitions, mechanical and electrical properties, methods of sampling, particle counters, mobility and aerodynamic size spectrometers, integrating nephelometer, absorption photometers.

Lecturer:
Prof. Dr. Alfred Wiedensohler (ali@tropos.de) Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research, Leipzig, Germany. This course is mainly intended for Ph.D. and M.Sc. students, young scientists, and personnel from aerosol measuring stations involved in GAW and other regional and local stations. The topics are interactively presented and discussed in English. For that reason a good command of English, both comprehending and speaking, is mandatory. In addition, undergraduate training in physics and/or chemistry as well as basic knowledge of atmospheric aerosols are required. The course is organized by the Laboratory for Atmospheric Physics (LFA), La Paz, Bolivia in collaboration with the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), Leipzig, Germany. Prof. Wiedensohler is a widely recognized expert on the topics of the course. He is currently editor in chief of the Journal Atmospheric Environment and the head of the World Calibration Centre for Aerosol Physics of the WMO World Meteorological Organization WMO) in the frame of the Global Atmosphere Watch program (GAW).

Participation costs:
The cost of the course is $US 150 per participant. This cost includes course registration, lecture materials, snacks during the lectures, a trip to the Mt. Chacaltaya GAW station on Saturday June 29 (meal and transportation are included), and a farewell dinner in La Paz. This cost does not include lodging or transportation to/from La Paz. Because the LFA does not have specific funding for the course there will be a limited number of waivers for this fee. Please, send your application and CV to Marcos Andrade (mandrade@atmos.umd.edu) as soon as possible, since the number of spaces for this course is limited.

The deadline for application is April 26, 2013

A committee will select those accepted for the course by May 3, 2013.
