Say: When the letter r comes after a vowel, it changes the sound that the vowel makes. We call this a bossy r. The bossy r is always looking behind him to see if theres a vowel that he can boss around! Model reading words from each column on the anchor chart: -ar, -or, -er/-ir/-ur *After reading -er, -ir, and -ur words say: These words all have the same bossy r sound. The only way I know which spelling pattern to use is to memorize the word, or look it up in a dictionary or Internet).
