Academic Year Prerequisite

Overview This course provides students with an understanding of issues involved in the design and conduct of empirical research in management (including the application of statistical and analytical techniques) by examination of recent seminal published work in selected areas of management. The unit comprises an analysis of the science of research, an examination of the key elements of research in management, data issues, ethical issues, hypothesis development, causal models, time-series analysis, the use of parametric and non-parametric statistical tests, survey-based research and general research methodology. In doing so, it aims to help students develop a critical perspective on the development of the academic management discipline and its contribution to the practice of management.

Course Objectives The learning objectives of this course are to provide generic skills in the form of:

High level of development: problem solving; statistical reasoning; application of theory to practice; synthesis of data and other information; evaluation of data and other information; use of computer software. Moderate level of development: written communication; interpretation and analysis; critical thinking; accessing data and other information from a range of sources. Some level of development: oral communication; collaborative learning; team work.

Course Organization The overall course will be a combination of lectures and student presentations. In the first part of the course in addition to lecturing, each student will be required to propose a research topic in a certain area and present it. In addition, students will also be asked to work out hand-in problem sets, either synthesizing the literature to be discussed in the class. In the second part of the course, besides lecturing, students will also be asked to select a research topic and prepare a proposal consisting of a literature review, theory and hypothesis development, an outline of the research methods to be applied and the data requirements which will be due approximately two weeks before the end of the course. There will also be a midterm and final exams. The final grade will thus depend on performance in the problem sets, final exam, the research paper, and student presentation and other class participation exercises. The course grade is determined as follows: a. Individual Class presentation: 20% b. Class participation and problem set: 15% c. Research Paper: 20 % d. Mid-term Exam: 25% d. Final Exam: 20% Class Assignments To observe students understanding of the methodology and its applications, students will be asked to work on some problem sets based on the topic learned. In addition, the evaluation can be also in the form of quizzes held in the class. The final research proposal should be submit on the final exam day at the least. Students who cannot deliver it on that day will not be allowed to take the examination. Bibliography 1. Cooper, Donald R., and Pamela S. Schindler. 2008. Business Research Methods. 10th Ed.
