For any political party in any other country of the world such issues would have been treated as part of the play and sorted with sagacity of a surgeons scalpel. Instead the party let these issues become crude machetes with which it managed to hack its own limbs off in the run up to the state elections. The virtual decimation of the BJP is a rude reminder to those who have hopes of a regime change in the next Lok Sabha elections. Voters of India may forgive acts of omission and commission but they will not forgive

incompetence and lack of realpolitik in governance. Politics by its nature demands that no principal or ideology be ultimate when juxtaposed with exigencies of governance. When BJP is looking to make corruption and governance as issues for next elections, it must remember that all of its promises and their worth in the eyes of the electorate will be evaluated in terms of its perceived ability to rule. As the experience of Karnataka shows party apparatchiks are interested in nitpicking and not governing. Advantage Congress!
Bharatiya Janata Party was traditionally known as a political party with its base firmly entrenched in the Northern States of India. The party was finally able to change that image by storming to power in the Southern state of Karnataka in 2008. Led by maverick Lingayat leader BS Yeddyurappa, BJP rose fast and grew deep in its Southern bastion. Sticking true to the adage of power corrupts BJPs state government soon fell prey to accusations of corruption by local leaders and the impact of local mining-builder nexus on governance.

up their conventional forces while strengthening their border infrastructure. India and its electorate may be busy watching the antics of the parrot and its muses but it can no longer manage to be oblivious to the fiery dragon next door. It bears remembrance that 1962 skirmish also witnessed an aggressive China undertaking a calibrated run up since late 1950s to deliver a wallop. Border incidents do not call for alarms in normal course of time however when incidents occur in particular contexts of domestic instability then due diligence must be exercised.
To reconsider the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) on his 152nd birth anniversary is to confront a maze of contradictions. What, for instance, inspired a school dropout without a college degree to establish an international university? Why did a member of the land-owning zamindar class feel compelled to write about the lives of oppressed peasants, and to experiment with schemes for rural development? How could a man write so insightfully about the lives of women? What made him express religious devotion in erotic language, and love in the language of religion? Why did he yearn for fame, yet live in constant fear of it? Difficult questions, but some clues may be found in the chequered narrative of Rabindranaths own life. He was born, he tells us, at the confluence of three important movements: the wave of social and religious reform, the literary renaissance in Bengal, and the nationalist struggle. His grandfather, Dwarakanath Tagore, was a well-known entrepreneur, and his father, Debendranath Tagore, was a pioneer of the Brahmo Samaj, a group of liberals who opposed Hindu orthodoxy. The youngest of 14 children, Rabindranath grew up in a privileged household in Kolkata, in an eclectic atmosphere where he was exposed to multiple cultural influences. He could never adapt to formal systems of schooling; he received his real education from the rich cultural environment of his home and family, and his travels in India and abroad. His literary talent blossomed early, and under the influence of his brother, Jyotirindranath, he discovered his gift of music. In childhood and adolescence, his sister-in-law Kadambari Devi became his playmate, companion and early muse. As a young man,

New Delhi The Supreme Court termed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) a caged parrot that speaks in its masters voice and asked the government whether it intended to make the agencys functioning independent. It is a caged parrot speaking in its masters voice, a bench headed by Justice R.M. Lodha said, adding: Its a sordid saga that there are many masters and one parrot. The courts observations came on CBI director Ranjit Sinhas second affidavit stating that Law Minister Ashwani Kumar and senior officials of the Prime Ministers Office and the coal ministry had made certain changes in the report on the allocation of coal blocks. The bench also asked the government whether it was contemplating a law to make the working of the CBI independent and insulate it from extraneous intrusion and interferences. There are other ways of bringing the law, Justice Lodha said, apparently pointing to ordinance route as parliament adjourned sine die Wednesday two days ahead of scheduled. The best things would be that such a law is put in place before the next hearing of the case (July 10) so that there would be an impartial and nonpartisan independent investigating agency, the judge said. Pointing to such a scenario, Justice Lodha said: It would be golden. It would really be wonderful. Making it clear that choice was with the government, the bench, which also included Justice Madan B.Lokur and Justice Kurian Joseph said in case government dithered, it would step in. If the CBI is not made independent, we will step in, it observed adding that CBI must know how to stand up against all pulls and pressures by government and its officials. Referring to the changes in the CBI status report, the court asked whether central government intends to bring some law to ensure the independence of CBI and its functional autonomy and insulate it from extraneous influences and interferences and make it a non-partisan investigating agency. The courts poser came as it said that it wanted to know the governments position before it could embark on an exercise to make the CBIs functioning independent and free from political and extraneous interferences. We would like to know the govern-
ments position before any exercise by us to ensure that the CBI functioned effectively, efficiently and independently particularly in cases regarding corruption, the bench stated. As Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati told the court he would seek instructions from the government on this point, the court, while referring to its judgment in Vineet Narain case in mid-1990s - when it had passed orders to check political and other interferences in the CBIs working - Justice Lodha said that after so many years we are at the worst stage. Asking the attorney general whether it should undertake the exercise to make CBI independent and effective, the court asked if government was inclined to enact an effective law in a particular time. We want an unambiguous assurance, very clear and candid assurance from you that law will be in place in a particular time, Justice Lodha told Vahanvati. The apex court also questioned the credibility of the CBI probe into the allocation of coal blocks and asked for a thorough and qualitative investigation. Expressing displeasure at the governments interference in the coal allocation probe report, the court said, the heart of the report was changed on the suggestions of the government officials. Asking the government to make the investigating agency impartial, the apex court said it needs to be ensured that the CBI functions free of all external pressures. It also said that the job of CBI is not to interact with government officials but to interrogate to find the truth. The court said the agency must know how to stand up against all pulls and pressures by government and its officials.
NATIONAL NEWS Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah dead, Bansal skips cabinet meeting, Congress defends him body sent home

New Delhi Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay died in a Chandigarh hospital, six days after he was attacked in a Jammu jail, and his body was flown to Pakistan by a special Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). India sidestepped Pakistans demand for an international probe but called for discussing the joint judicial panels recommendations. The flight took off from Chandigarh airport Thursday evening with the body. The body was handed over to officials of the Pakistan High Commission and formalities completed at the airport before the flight took off, an official said here. A minor hiccup related to documentation and other formalities earlier held up the planes departure, scheduled around 5 p.m. by over an hour, an official source said. Sanaullah, who had been hospitalised at Chandigarhs PGIMER hospital after being attacked in Jammus Kot Bhalwal jail May 3, died due to multiple organ failure, doctors said. Flown to Chandigarh from Jammu last Friday after he was attacked, Sanaullah remained extremely critical and in deep coma in the last six days. Sanaullah was declared dead around 7 a.m. due to multiple organ failure. The team of doctors headed by Y.K. Batra tried their best to revive him, a spokesperson of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) said. Sanaullah had been in deep coma since the attack on him by a fellow inmate May 3, just a day after Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner in Pakistan, succumbed to grievous injuries following a vicious assault in Lahores Kot Lakhpat Jail. Legal formalities were completed in coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir government as he was serving his life term in that state. New DelhI Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, under a cloud over his kins alleged involvement in bribery for a plum railway board posting, skipped a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. There is speculation he may be asked to quit. Opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) have demanded Bansals resignation after his nephew Vijay Singla was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly taking a bribe for the appointment of a member of the Railway Board. A Delhi court sent Singla and four others, including prime accused and railway official Mahesh Kumar, to judicial custody till May 20. Singla allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs.90 lakh from Mahesh Kumar for his appointment as member (Electrical) of the powerful Railway Board. Businessmen N.R. Manjunath and Sandeep Goyal helped Mahesh Kumar in arranging money to bribe Singla and were to get favours after his appointment as member (Electrical). Four other co-accused - Vivek Kumar, Dharmendra, Rahul Yadav and Samir Sandhir - are already in judicial custody till May 20. The Congress defended Bansal. How is the minister answerable? Pawan Bansal has a career of 30-35
Chandigarh Home Secretary Anil Kumar had said Sanaullahs body would be air-lifted to Pakistan after his post-mortem and completion of other formalities. Pakistan High Commission spokesperson Manzoor Ali Memon said in New Delhi that Pakistan was in grief and shock. We have requested the government of India for an international inquiry into the brutal attack on the Pakistani citizen, Memon said. In Islamabad, the Pakistan government demanded that perpetrators of this heinous crime be brought to justice. We have learnt with a deep sense of grief that Sanaullah has expired today (Thursday) in a hospital in Chandigarh, India. He succumbed to the brutal injuries inflicted upon him during an attack in a jail, said the Pakistan ministry of foreign affairs. India said all necessary measures, medically and otherwise, had been taken to save him. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, he succumbed to the injuries and died in the hospital today, said ministry of external affairs (MEA) spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin. Asked about Pakistans demand for an international probe into the incident, he said India had already conveyed that the two countries should
sit together and take forward the recommendations of a joint judicial panel. Asked about Pakistans demand for an international probe, union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said: I cannot comment on this now as no demand has come to us till now. When the demand comes, I will tell you. As news came in about Sanaullahs death, 17 Pakistani prisoners lodged in the Jammu jail raised anti-India slogans. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah offered his sincere apology to Sanaullahs family. Although its scant consolation, Id like to offer a sincere apology to the family, Abdullah tweeted. The chief minister regretted that such a thing should have happened at all, but assured that those responsible for dereliction of duty in this incident would not go unpunished. Two members of Sanaullahs family had arrived in Chandigarh Tuesday from Pakistan. They had appealed to the Indian government to repatriate him to Pakistan. Sanaullah was arrested in 1996 and charged with involvement in a bomb blast at Katra near the Hindu shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi in 1994 which left 10 people dead. He was serving life term in the Jammu jail.
years which is clear. He is a simple man and till now, no charges had been levelled against him, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said in Bhopal. It is the relative who is answerable not the minister, he added. If CBI has proof that Pawan Bansal is involved in this matter, then the Congress will not spare anyone, he said. Information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari played down Bansals absence from the cabinet meeting. It happens at times, ministers deciding in their wisdom if any item relating to their ministry is not listed, Tewari told reporters after the cabinet meeting. The railway minister has welcomed the investigation process and it should be allowed to continue
New Delhi The union Cabinet gave its approval for declaring 2013 as Water Conservation Year. An official press release said a number of mass awareness activities will be undertaken during the year, with emphasis on sensitising people on water-related issues and encouraging them to use it judiciously. The policies and programmes of the Ministry of Water Resources will be propagated to create a sustainable society and economy. An effective and sustained mass awareness programme will be launched with the involvement of all stakeholders to achieve the objectives identified in the National Water Policy, 2012 and National Water Mission, the release said It said that water was a scarce resource with the country having more than 18 percent of the worlds popuThe court April 30 had acquitted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who was also an accused in the case, contending that he deserved benefit of doubt since one of the victims and key witness Jagdish Kaur did not name him as an accused in her statement recorded by the Justice Ranganath Mishra panel in 1985. The case against Sajjan Kumar and others was registered in 2005 on a recommendation of the Justice G.T. Nanavati Commission which inquired into the riots. The CBI had filed two charge sheets against Sajjan Kumar and others in January 2010. Earlier in the day, during the arguments on quantum of sentence, CBI sought death sentence for Balwan Khokkar, Girdhari Lal and Captain Bhagmal saying: They were engaged in planned communal riot and religious cleansing.
had blindfolded those youths and unfortunately, there was no leadership to bridle the mob frenzy unleashed with all cruelty. It also rejected the plea of two other convicts, Mahinder Yadav and Kishan Khokkar who were awarded three-year imprisonment that they be released on probation. The courts order further said: There cannot be two opinions that offences committed in this case were grave where victims of a particular community had been targeted for killing and destroying their properties. This court has already taken the facts into consideration that there were 341 killings in the area of police station Delhi Cantonment of this case itself. The 29-year-old case relates to the killing five people in Delhi Cantonment area during violence against the Sikhs following the assassination of
then prime minister Indira Gandhi on Oct 31, 1984. Kehar Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Raghuvender Singh, Narender Pal Singh and Kuldeep Singh - who were members of the same family - were killed by the mob in Delhi Cantonments Raj Nagar area. Kehar and Gurpreet were the husband and son, respectively, of complainant and eye-witness Jagdish Kaur. Raghuvender, Narender and Kuldeep were her brothers. The family members of the riot victims expressed resentment over the punishment, demanding death penalty for the culprits. We are disappointed with the judgment as the quantum of punishment is to less for these convicts. We want death penalty for them, said Jarnail Singh who is fighting for justice for Sikh riot victims.

Reacting to the judgment, M. Pushparayan, a key leader in the Peoples Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) told in Chennai: It is a delayed and unjust judgment. It will not bind us and our protest against the project will continue. The KNPP will not even satisfy the power requirements of Tamil Nadu or even Kerala, Pushparayan contended. It is discouraging that the court seems to have not considered important issues like the substandard equipments used in the reactor, Coastal Regulation Zone stipulations, spent fuel storage, conduct of proper mock drill for the locals while deciding on the case, he said on phone from Tirunelveli district. According to Pushparayan, around 25 school children submitted a petition to the Tirunelveli district collector to shut down the nuclear plant due to its substandard equipment. The NPCIL is setting up the project in Kudankulam, around 650 km from Chennai, with two Russian-made VVER 1,000-MW each reactors.

Washington With Pakistan arming itself with nuclear capable cruise missiles with stealth capabilities, a new dimension has been added to Indias maritime security challenges, says leading Indian defence expert retired Commodore C. Uday Bhaskar. Taking a leaf from China, Pakistan seems to be investing in cruise missiles, he said, referring to Pakistans indigenously developed cruise missile Babur, which can carry both nuclear and conventional warheads. This has lowered the index of stability in the region, Bhaskar said at an Asia-Pacific security seminar on Indias Maritime Security Challenges at the East-West Centre . But in dealing with issues ranging from low intensity conflict and piracy to major-power strategic contests, Indias key challenges were resource constraints, ship building capabilities, maritime infrastructure and the changing geo-political environment, he said. The rapidly changing strategic environment in South Asia and emergence of an extended global common posed another challenge, said Bhaskar, currently a distinguished fellow with the Society for Policy Studies and a visiting fellow at the National Maritime Foundation in New Delhi. Over the next decade, the US, China and India will form a critical strategic triangle and their individual rela-
Kuala Lumpur Malaysias ruling coalition won a fiercely contested general election with a comparatively slimmer majority, polling results showed early Monday. The opposition declined to accept the result citing electoral fraud allegations. The ruling coalition Barisan National secured 133 seats in the 222-seat lower house of parliament, down from the 140 seats in the last election in 2008. The ruling coalition owns its victory largely to the lead in its strongholds of the state of Sabah and Sarawak in East Malaysia, which contributed a total of 47 parliamentary seats. Barisan managed to make some improvement in the state elections, in which it won in nine out of the 12 states contested. Speaking at a press conference, Barisan chairman and caretaker Prime Minister Najib Razak urged the opposition to accept the election
tionships with the ASEAN, Iran and Pakistan will have significant regional and global implications, he said. Given its distinctive geography and the recent shift of global maritime focus from the Atlantic-Pacific combine to the Indo-Pacific continuum, the importance of the Indian Ocean Region in Indias national security calculus has greatly increased in the post-Cold War/post 9-11 era, Bhaskar said. Yet the Indian Navy mandated to address this wide spectrum security domain received about a sixth of an overall defence budget of less than $40 billion in fiscal 2012-13, he said. He noted that within the Indian military matrix, the navy was referred to as the Cinderella service. Indias ship building capabilities too were not really flattering, blighted as they were by time and cost over-
runs, Bhaskar said. He listed the ability to build credibly fight capable ships as another key challenge. The countrys maritime infrastructure too was less than rudimentary, he said. He added that that in terms of ports, Indias top port Mumbai was listed at the 30th spot in the world. However, Bhaskar said there was a growing awareness at the national level that over the next two decades Indias future aspirations and anxieties will be increasingly shaped by its ability to address the challenges and opportunities of the maritime domain.

Our primary concern is for the safety and security of the peacekeepers. Certainly that is what the focus is on, Nesirky said.
Dyer and officials from the US Attorneys Office in Fresno met with more than 100 people at the Sikh gurdwara Tuesday evening to discuss the attack. Piara Singh was reportedly approached by a man in his late 20s or early 30s who was riding a bicycle and armed with a steel rod. Without saying a word, the attacker beat Singh in the head and body. Singh is hospitalized with head wounds, broken ribs and lung lacerations. Temple officials cited by the Bee said the attack was not a robbery and that Singh had never seen the man before. If the attack is determined to be a hate crime, federal charges could be filed, Mark Cullers, chief of the US Attorneys Office in Fresno was quoted as saying by the Bee. That could be in addition to any state charges filed against the assailant, he said. Singh remains in the hospital in serious condition.

There is no hard evidence that unemployment among the indigenous population has worsened. According to Salt, immigration can affect youth unemployment, and put pressure on housing and land use over time. But he says immigrants do not overburden the welfare system as some activists claim. The Queens Speech also touched on foreign affairs, with the British government promising to fight terrorism and sexual violence in war, support countries in transition in the Middle East, and help advance the fledgling

As president of the Group of Eight industrialized countries this year, the government says it will promote free trade, government accountability and efforts to fight climate change. The government also pledged to protect residents of the Falkland Islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas and claims as its own. The two countries fought a war over the islands 31 years ago. In Wednesdays speech, the British government pledged to allow residents of all British overseas territories to determine their own political future. In a referendum in March, Falkland Islanders voted almost unanimously to remain a British territory.
Pakistani politician and former cricketer Imran Khan is recovering in the hospital after a fall that essentially ends his public campaigning in the run-up to elections this Saturday. Doctors treated the leader of the Pakistan Movement for Justice party for injuries to his head and back after he fell more than four meters Tuesday from a raised platform at an election rally in Lahore. Khans injuries are not life-threatening, but doctors say they have
advised the 60-year-old politician to stay in bed and rest for about a week. A televised statement that Khan gave overnight from his hospital bed urged people to vote for his PTI party in the May 11 elections. This weeks vote will mark a democratic milestone in a country ruled for half of its history by the military. It will be the first time a civilian government has served a full term and handed power to another through the ballot box.
MIC cannot be proud of its achievement as the party lost two state seats this time, Partibhan was quoted as saying by The Star newspaper. MIC did not do well, so who is going to take responsibility for the poor performance? She said the party should give a senate post to Wanita MIC because of its contributions ahead of the polls. Jayasooria said several MIC candidates lost by big margins to Indian candidates from other parties. MIC faced Indians from the opposition in five parliamentary seats but managed to win only the Cameron Highlands and Tapah seats while losing the Sungai Siput, Subang and Kapar seats, he was quoted as saying. Jayasooria said dramatic changes were needed at the partys divisional level to identify younger people who can be groomed to lead the party. Ethnic Indians comprise a little over seven percent of Malaysias total population of nearly 30 million.

Pawan Kumar Bansal, Railway Minister Though a close relative, he or any other relative of mine does not and cannot meddle in my official function or influence my decision. There is also no business relationship between his and my family.I look forward to an expeditious investigation by CBI in the matter.
Ravi Shankar Prasad, BJP chief spokesperson We demand that not only Pawan Bansal be sacked, but he should be prosecuted by the CBI because under Section 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, if any public servant abuses his position to obtain pecuniary benefits for himself of any other person is liable to be prosecuted and convicted.
Satyapal Jain, BJPs legal cell head We demand that Bansal should be immediately interrogated by CBI because he is key in the entire sequence of things. If he is clean in the entire episode (relating to arrest of his nephew and others by the CBI), then why has he maintained silence.
Ram Gopal Yadav, SP leader When non-Congress officials are caught, they are quickly investigated. But Congress ministers accused of corruption are protected. This is a serious matter and Pawan Bansal cannot be protected for long. He will have to be sacked.
Mayawati, BSP chief The CBI is investigating the matter and it should not take long to conclude the probe. We should not conclude or ask the Railway Minister to resign just like that.
Sukhbir Singh Badal, Deputy chief minister The CBI did this by mistake. It had no clue that the scam they were exposing was directly linked to Bansal. Otherwise, the CBI would have avoided nabbing a ministers kin. Now the CBIs focus will be on saving Bansal.
Janardan Dwivedi, Congress General Secretary The Railway Minister himself has given a clarification and said that there should be a thorough probe into the matter. I dont think we can expect any thing more from him.

The corrupt fear only the courts as the governments which are expected to act against them are either silent or shielding them, Naidu said. He alleged that the governments both at the centre and in states like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka failed to act against corruption. Naidu alleged that the Congress government in Andhra Pradesh was shielding the ministers named as accused in the chargesheets filed in corruption cases against Jaganmohan Reddy. The tainted ministers are continuing in the cabinet, he said. Referring to Karnataka poll results, Naidu said the Congress came to power because people had no other alternative. The TDP chief said people of Karnataka taught a lesson to Janardhana Reddy and Yeddyurappa, who floated parties for their selfish interests. He also took strong exception to the allegation by YSR Congress party that his recent visit to Delhi was to stop Jaganmohan Reddy from getting bail. When the Supreme Court is not sparing the prime minister, law and coal ministers, this allegation is ridiculous. Nobody can influence the Supreme Court, he said.
Hyderabad Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu Thursday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to respond to the Supreme Court passing strictures against the government for tinkering with the CBI report on coal blocks allocation. Naidu told reporters here that the prime minister should break his silence and act in all the corruption cases as he was supposed to lead and guide the country. The former Andhra Pradesh chief minister said the Supreme Court observations on the prime minister and coal and law ministers reflected on how the UPA governments inefficiency and inaction were leading to one corruption scandal after the other.
The three-member committee earlier this week confirmed the allegations made by Parab, who had claimed that underage and diseased cattle, often procured from neighbouring states, were slaughtered at the facility. Creating a record of sorts, he came to power within nine months of the formation of the TDP, ending the monopoly of the Congress party in state politics. Jaganmohan Reddy, popularly called Jagan, in a case of disproportionate assets and said his release could hamper the probe against him. The apex court also cancelled the bail of Jagans auditor Vijay Sai Reddy and directed him to surrender by June 5, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) counsel Ashok Bhan told reporters outside the Supreme Court. A division bench of Justices P. Sathasivam and M.Y. Iqbal also rejected the bail plea of industrialist Nimmagadda Prasad, an accused in the case. The Supreme Court directed the CBI to complete its investigations in four months. Jagan, a Lok Sabha member from Kadapa, was arrested by the CBI on May 27 last year on charges of amassing huge wealth by doling out favours to individuals and companies who invested in his business when his father Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. Bhan said the court observed that Jagan was involved in the greatest scam and that he had enriched himself and deprived society of legitimate rights of development. The Supreme Court took serious view of
this and observed that enriching an individual or a group of individuals is not permissible under law and he has to suffer and remain in jail for some more time, he said. Terming Jagan the main accused and main beneficiary of the scam money, the court rejected the bail plea on the ground that being an influential politician, he may hamper the investigations. I feel excited. The rule of law has prevailed. The Supreme Court has upheld the rule of law. All rumours floated by the accused are blunted and nailed now, Bhan said. The court also noted that there was an enormous increase in while collar crimes, which has serious repercussions on the economy of the country. On Vijay Sai Reddy, the court quashed the order of the high court, which had upheld the bail granted to him last year by the trial court. The apex court gave him time to surrender to enable him to attend his daughters marriage on May 26. The bench asked him to surrender by May 30 but, on the request by his lawyer, allowed him time till June 5. The court observed that Vijay Sai Reddy was not an ordinary chartered accountant but the main brain behind the scam. Bhan had argued that the Vijay Sai Reddy was granted bail on irrelevant considerations.

base-camp for trips to Gulmarg and Pahalgam, said Mohit Gupta, chief business officer (Holidays), MakeMyTrip. The snow in Gulmarg even in the summer season and its spectacular beauty make it a truly memorable holiday destination, he added. Carriers like Air India are getting healthy passenger loads on its Delhi-Srinagar and Mumbai-Srinagar flights thanks to the transit travellers to places like Gulmarg. The average load factor on both flights is 80 percent and around 92 percent on the Delhi-Srinagar rout. We expect the load factors to go up, a senior Air India official told in New Delhi. Gulmargs tourist industry insiders say that around 150-200 tourists in groups are flocking to the Valley, only to be lured away from the houseboats of Dal Lake to the high mountains where there is still plenty of snow. We still have snow in some lower
reaches of Gulmarg, at the higher reaches which can be reached by gondola (ropeway); there is plenty of snow and even snowfall, said Nazir Ahmad, a ski and tourist guide at the tourist spot. We have enough snow to at least support winter sports like skiing, while most of the tourists are happy to play in the snow. Gulmarg which means meadow of flowers is famous as a skiing destination and with the abatement of militancy in the area, it has quickly become one of the states most visited destinations. The hill station also boasts of the longest and highest ski resorts in Asia on the slopes of Afarwat hills of the Pir Panjal Range. The place also houses Gulmarg Gondola which is one of the worlds highest cable car, reaching 3,979 metres or nearly 13,000 feet. The hill station is accessible from Srinagar in under two hours by car or bus.

DU gets approval of Four Year UG Programme
Delhi Universitys Academic Council and executive council approved all 54 courses covering 42 subjects, 11 foundation courses and one applied (language) course on its agenda from its forthcoming academic year 20132014. This was the second round of discussions on the new courses for the four-year undergraduate degree programme. Amendments to the university ordinances-including ones that propose to decentralize SC/ST/OBC admissions, change the names of degrees from Associate Baccalaureate, Baccalaureate and Baccalaureate with Honours/BTech to Diploma, Bachelor and Bachelor with Honours and set down the mechanism for Discipline II courses-were still being discussed at the time of filing this report. The AC meeting continued late into the night. Amendments to the university ordinances, including the one that proposes to change the names of degrees from associate baccalaureate, baccalaureate and baccalaureate with honours/BTech to diploma, bachelor and bachelor with honours, were still being discussed at the time of filing this report. The four-year programme with multiple degree options will entail a shift from the present 10+2+3 scheme to a four-year graduation with multiple exit points. The new system to introduce interdisciplinary pedagogy, enhance the quality of education , employable skills ,entrepreneurial skills and research inclinations according to the tastes and talent of each student .
New Delhi Jamia Millia Islamia, one of the countrys oldest universities, has embarked upon a series of country-specific programmes to prepare a cadre of experts to fulfil the research needs of the government and think tanks, something which foreign service officials are perhaps not adept at doing, the university says. The neighbours are extremely critical for us to understand. So what we produce in terms of MPhils and PhDs will actually go and produce the brains for the country. When the government is looking for brains, these MPhils will fulfil that need, Jamia Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung told . Individuals drawn from both academia and the corridors of diplomacy run these programmes. T.C.A. Rangachari, the director of the Academy of International Studies (AIS), served as Indias ambassador to France, Germany and Algeria and was the division head of China in the foreign ministry Zikrur Rahman spent 25 years as a diplomat in the Arab world and was
the Indian ambassador to Palestine. There are also academics who have spent their entire careers on research. Field work being critical to successful research, each centre is striving to solve this challenge in its own unique way. For instance, the biggest challenge is before the Pakistan Studies Programme (PSP), where travel by PhD students to Pakistan is practically ruled out. But as programme coordinator Ajay Darshan Behera told: We subvert this problem by engaging as many scholars and experts as possible from Pakistan by inviting them to Jamia. Through a series of seminars, the PSP has invited the Whos Who of Pakistans intelligentsia, diplomacy and literary world to Jamia, including the former ambassador to the US, Husain Haqqani. The PSP, set up in 2004 and recognised by the UGC in 2005, aims to promote greater understanding among scholars about Pakistan through extensive research work on the countrys history, sociology, cul-
ture, literature, contemporary politics, trade and economics, geopolitics, and security and foreign policy. The Afghanistan Studies Programme encourages inter-disciplinary research focussing on the history, sociology, contemporary politics, economics, geopolitics, security, foreign policy and also languages. The programme is designed to stimulate debate in India on the politics, society, and economics of Afghanistan. It hopes to produce a pool of scholars with expertise on Afghanistan in India. The UGC-sanctioned China Studies Programme will focus on studying the countrys internal dynamics and external relations. While Indias approach to China is dominated by Sino-Indian relations, we need experts who understand the internal dynamics of China, programme coordinator Ravni Thakur said. The programme titled Central Asia and its Neighbourhoods: Past Ties and Future Relations was started in 2007 following UGC approval.

maiahs supporters cheering, screaming, hooting and dancing. Siddaramaiah has been unanimously selected as our legislature party leader and he will be chief minister, state leader and former minister R.V. Deshpande told reporters even before Antony formally announced the high commands decision. This was among the quickest decisions taken by the Congress in recent years. Earlier, all the legislators authorised the high command, which includes party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi, to decide on the name for the coveted post. Madhusudhan Mistry, the Congress general secretary in-charge of Kar-
nataka, was also present at the threehour-long meeting. Asserting that there were no differences among the elected members and they were united on who should become the chief minister, Shiva Kumar said legislators had given their opinion to the observers in writing and left the decision to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. All the legislators have expressed their opinion in writing to the observers in the form of a secret ballot, authorising the party high command to decide. Later, a resolution was unanimously passed to leave the decision to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, Shiva Kumar added. The one-line resolution was moved by Siddaramaiah and seconded by the state party leaders Roshan Baig, H.K. Patil and Deshpande, who were elected to the assembly in the May 5 poll. The counting was on Wednesday. With a comfortable majority of 121 seats in the 225-member assembly, including one nominated member, the Congress returned to power on its own after a gap of nine years. Election to the states 14th legislative assembly was held in 223 constituencies across the state May 5 and counting May 8. Polling for one assembly seat - Periyapatna in Mysore district - was postponed to May 28 following the death of the BJP candidate April 29. The outgoing ruling party, the BJP, secured 40 seats, as did the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S). Of the remaining 22 seats, newlyfloated regional outfits the Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) and BSR (Badavara Shramika Raithara) bagged six and four, respectively. CBI raids on kin of Chandigarh MP and ex-Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal is the talk of the town in city beautiful. Bansal has stridden the electoral canvas of Chandigarh like a colossus. Grounded in a solid base of clan managed electoral machinery and deep financial muscle, Bansals brand of politics has been lately unchallenged in the city. However allegations of financial impropriety, corruption, nepotism and arrest of a close relative has called all of it into question. Reports of his falling out of favour with the high command has created some chinks in the armour
of what was once an invincible electoral proposition. To better understand the impact of the turn of recent events and develop an insight into the future course of citys politics U Connectt in collaboration with SMI undertook the first exclusive poll of the voters in the city to gauge the mood of the citizens. The survey consists of randomly sampled respondents representing various sections of the society on a proportionate basis. The survey was conducted over four days after the arrest of Bansals nephew and reflects the current mood of the elector-
Analysis
Q) Are you satisfied with the UPA government at the centre? UPA governments performance at the centre has been ranked as below par by the voting electorate. 72% of the respondents are dissatisfied with the government of Manmohan Singh and would like to have an alternative to the current government marred by non-performance and corruption. Q) Will you vote on local issues or national issues? Despite having clear cut preferences regarding the candidatures of various parties and local issues dominating the affairs, 82% of the electorate admitted to being affected by the national issues while going to vote. Q) Which party do you think enjoys an advantage nationally? UPA government is skating on thin ice nationally, at least the Chandigarh voters aver. Over 42% voters consider BJP to be in an advantageous position nationally, 26% of the voters consider the swing to be in INC favour. The decisive 22% of voters are sitting on the fence indicating a huge chunk of silent voters waiting to switch sides.
Team SMI interviewed a sample from entire crossection of the electorate and asked them pivot questions that help us decipher the mood of the electorate. We asked the electorate about the impact of the current events on their voting choices and the future outcomes of elections. A detailed analysis of the responses to the questions is as follows Q) Will your voting choice be affected by the latest CBI investigation that implicates PK Bansals nephew? Over 56% of the voting electorate believes that CBI raids on the ministers kin and the subsequent allegations on the minister himself will have an impact on their voting preferences. 39% of the voting public admitted to being indifferent to the raids and did not consider them as a factor influencing their voting choices. The verdict from the electorate does indicate that there will be implications of the last weeks fallout on next LS elections. Q) Which party are you likely to vote for in the coming Lok Sabha elections? When asked to express their party preference for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the city electorate still expressed a lingering support for the Indian National Congress. As per the survey the incumbent party of India is leading by a moderate lead of 5.5% votes. Out of the sampled electorate 30% voters still supported
INC and 24.5% voters expressed a preference for BJP. The opportunity however lies in the 28% undecided votes who have chosen to sit on the fence. The elections will be decided by this silent vote and they generally trend towards the winning side on a national basis. Q) Who amongst the following leaders of the BJP is more likely to be able to challenge INC candidate? a) Satya Pal Jain b) Harmohan Dhawan c) Sanjay Tandon In good news for BJP veteran Satya Pal Jain 42% of the voters support his candidature as the BJP leader most likely to challenge the INC in its stronghold. Harmohan Dhawan is placed second with his candidature carrying the support amongst 19% voters while Sanjay Tandonbrings up the rear with 15% voters supporting his candidature. BJP is facing a structural issue of lacking new leaders and young blood that can energize its campaign. Q) Is corruption an election issue for the people of Chandigarh? The voter in Chandigarh is singed by the heat of widespread corruption in the society. Over 86% of the respondents acknowledged that corruption will be a major issue at the time of voting. However this acknowledgment was not followed up by any directed anger or pinpointing of any particular source of corruption in the society.
Key Findings
The survey bears bad news and good news for the Congress in equal measure, while the local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal of the INC has slid down the popularity ratings, the party equity still stands strong. The CBI raids have resonated deep with the city electorate and there will be a definite impact of these on the upcoming Lok Sabha election in Chandigarh. The voters of Chandigarh have expressed acute dissatisfaction with Indian National Congress at a national level, however in the city the voters have not started considering the BJP as a viable opposition. In some consolation for SP Jain the veteran legal eagle of the BJP, the electorate still considers him to be the most likely challenger to the INC in Chandigarh. The other two contenders Harmohan Dhawan and SanjayTandon have not managed to widen their base in the city.
Conclusion
To conclude BJP may be doing well nationally and it has successfully managed to convey a message at that level. The Congress on the other hand has managed to hold onto to its vote bank locally despite the allegations of taint against is local MP and the government in general. The people of Chandigarh are on the lookout for an alternative but the opposition BJP has failed to evoke response in traditional Congress constituencies and the youth. Despite the current dents in the armour of Chandigarh INC, it may not prove to be enough to dislodge it, provided they manage to swing the fence sitters to their side.

Dont think I want to make sleazy Kate Moss poses comedies: Saif
New Delhi Actor-producer Saif Ali Khan is treading new territories with Go Goa Gone - a zombie comedy, after making romance-based entertainers like Love Aaj Kal and Cocktail, but hes quite sure he wont ever make a sleazy comedy. Theres a thin line between naughty and sleazy, he believes. Why is comedy all about sleaze nowadays? Everything should have a representative, I guess! So, also have a branch of comedy, which is sleazy, but I suppose there is an audience for that as well. There are different kinds of people in our country, and youve got to cater to all. But I dont think I want to make a sleazy film. Id rather make a naughty one, the 42-year-old told.Go Goa Gone, his production and acting venture, releases May 10. Starring Kunal Kemmu, Vir Das and Anand Tiwari in key roles, the movie, as Saif believes, is a naughty kind! Narrating a scene from the movie, he said: Theres a scene in which Kunals character goes and buys condoms. The shopkeeper asks him, So what kind of condoms do you want? and then Kunals character says, Well, the ones for having sex! So this, I think is naughty and funny, but not sleazy. While the movie has been heavily promoted as a zombie film, Saif says its not all that zombie. Its a very urban movie, its a funny one and not aimed at buying anyone into the theory of the zombie. It is essentially a story of these three boys and their ridiculous adventures. So, I think its nice if we can just laugh a little bit without thinking whats a zombie and all of that, he said. The idea behind Go Goa Gone was also to cater to the audience which wants new and exciting genres and storylines. The audience is ready and maturing. So it is up to us now to give them the content. I remember Kunal (Kemmu) came up to me with this script, and said this is a comedy about zombies. At first I was apprehensive to try something new, to produce something new, but then when I read the script, I laughed out loud quite a number of times. I believe the audience will laugh too, Saif said.
The budget for the film, he said, was not very much. But he promises they havent cheated the audience. He said the crew shot a lot on beaches and in jungles of Mauritius, besides getting Hollywood experts to work on the zombies make-up. Saifs own look is different in the film - he sports blonde locks. I liked the idea, he said.

Around 15 years ago, the first time I went to Ibiza I didnt want to be the only white person on the beach, so I had a St. Tropez, dailymail.co.uk quoted the model as saying. She added: St. Tropez does it so well that you do look natural, you dont have that fear which I always did of going streaky and not being able to fix it - total nightmare. There is no reason to go around with that pasty pallor anymore, which is really exciting.s Talking about the signing with the brand, she said that she has been using the products since they started and its a really trustworthy, cool brand.

dance performances throughout the country. They celebrate the contributions that mothers make to Samoan society. Mothers Day falls on different days depending on the countries where it is celebrated. It is held on the second Sunday of May in many countries, such as Australia,Canada and the United States. It is held exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday in the United Kingdom. Sundays are usually non-school and non-working days in these countries. The modern-day origins of Mothers Day can be attributed to two women Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, who were important in establishing the tradition in the United States. Around 1870, Julia Ward Howe called for Mothers Day to be celebrated each year. It continued to be held in Boston for about 10 years under her sponsorship, but died out after that. Other sources say that Juliet Calhoun Blakely initiated
Mothers Day in Albion, Michigan, in the late 1800s. Her sons paid tribute to her each year and urged others to honor their mothers. In 1907, Anna Jarvis held a private Mothers Day celebration in memory of her mother, Ann Jarvis, in Grafton, West Virginia. In 1908, she played a key role in arranging a church service that attracted 407 children and their mothers. A Mothers Day International Association was founded in 1912 to promote the holiday in other countries. Mothers Day has grown increasingly popular since then. Many people believe that Mothers Day is now largely commercialized, with card companies, flower shops, jewelry stores, gift shops, restaurants, hotels, and department stores advertising promotions and special deals for this event. Anna Jarvis, in her lifetime, unsuccessfully filed a lawsuit to stop the over-commercialization of Mothers Day.

Ram Sampath, Keerthi Sagathia, K. Mohan, Marianne DCruz Aiman, Vipin Mishra. The music album of director Atul Sabharwals debut movie Aurangzeb, a crime thriller, has five tracks and its four musical versions. The compositions are interesting and centred around power, which is in sync with the theme. Barbadiyaan, a peppy number sung by Ram Sampath and Sashaa Agha. The lyrics have an undertone of darkness, but energetic composition makes it a party track. Infused with electro beats, it becomes more interesting when Ram goes behind the mike. The music is not extraordinary, but interesting. Jigra fakira, which is sung beautifully by Keerthi Sagathia. The song has a touch of folk and Sufi music. The music becomes overwhelming when the violin starts playing. The song may not appeal to everyone, but music lovers should definitely lend an ear to the song. Barbaadi follows next. It has similar lyrics to the one sung by Sashaa
and Ram, but the music and tone of the song are completely different. Singer K. Mohans voice is so magical that you are hooked to it. Since the song has a grave appeal, it is best heard when alone. Aurangzeb and is sung by Marianne DCruz Aiman. It talks about Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and hence has all the required grandness. There is a choir, which supports the singer. In short, a powerful number! Aurangzeb rock; rock version of previous number and Vipin Mishra has lent his voice for the song. It has sound of drums and guitars, all that a rock version would need. Suddenly, it becomes smooth and silent. Vipins voice has the required aggression and passion for the song. It is very well channelised composition. The album also has four instrumental versions titled Trial by fire, Battleground Gurgaon, The fathers truth and Aurangzeb Orchestra. Aurangzeb has interesting compositions and the music is well put together, but not an all round soundtrack as it wont appeal to the masses.

NASA and Amateur Radio Operators Piece Together the PhoneSat Picture
Although the ultimate goal of the PhoneSat mission was to determine whether a consumer-grade smartphone can be used as the main flight avionics for a satellite in space, the three miniature satellites (named Alexander, Graham and Bell) also took pictures of Earth and transmitted these image-data packets to multiple ground stations on Earth. Above photo was taken by the PhoneSat-1 (Bell) nanosatellite and reconstructed by the Ames Phonesat Team and multiple amateur radio operators around the world. Image credit: NASA Ames Above image was taken by the PhoneSat-2 (Graham) nanosatellite and the most recently reconstructed by the Ames Phonesat Team and multiple volunteer ham radio operators around the world. Image credit: NASA Ames For about one week, engineers at NASAs Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., and amateur radio operators around the world collaborated to reconstruct an image of Earth sent to them from three smartphones in orbit. The joint effort was part of NASAs nanosatellite mission, called PhoneSat, which launched on Sunday, April 21, 2013 aboard the Antares rocket from NASAs Wallops Island Flight Facility in Virginia. Although the ultimate goal of the PhoneSat mission was to determine whether a consumer-grade smartphone can be used as the main flight avionics for a satellite in space, the three miniature satellites used their smartphone cameras to take pictures of Earth and transmitted these image-data packets to multiple ground stations. Every packet held a small piece of the big picture. As the data became available, the PhoneSat Team and multiple amateur ham radio operators, who call themselves hams, pieced together a high-resolution photograph from the tiny data packets. During the short time the spacecraft were in orbit, we were able to demonstrate the smartphones abil-
ity to act as satellites in the space environment, said Bruce Yost, the program manager for NASAs Small Satellite Technology Program. The PhoneSat project also provided an opportunity for NASA to collaborate with its space enthusiasts. Amateur radio operators from every continent but Antarctica contributed in capturing the data packets we needed to piece together the smartphones image of Earth from space. As part of their preparation for space, the smartphones were outfitted with a low-powered transmitter operating in the amateur radio band. They sent the image information to awaiting hams who worked with the Ames engineers to stitch together multiple, tiny images to restore the complete Earth view. Piecing together the photo was a very successful collaboration between NASAs PhoneSat team and volunteer amateur ham radio operators around the world. NASA researchers and hams working together was an excellent example of Citizen Science, or crowd-sourced
science, which is scientific research conducted, in whole or in part, by amateur or nonprofessional scientists. On the second day of the mission, the Ames team had received over 200 packets from amateur radio operators. Three days into the mission we already had received more than 300 data packets, said Alberto Guillen Salas, an engineer at Ames and a member of the PhoneSat team. About 200 of the data packets were contributed by the global community and the remaining packets were received from members of our team with the help of the Ames Amateur Radio Club station, NA6MF. The mission successfully ended Saturday, April 27, 2013, after predicted atmospheric drag caused the PhoneSats to re-enter Earths atmosphere and burn up. The NASA PhoneSat Team would like to acknowledge how grateful we are to the amateur radio community for contributing to the success of this mission, said Oriol Tintore, an engineer and a member of the PhoneSat Team at Ames who

These investments represent more growth, jobs and progress for the US economy and should, in my view, be welcomed, Rao said. Mumbai The Reliance Industries (RIL)-led consortium operating the offshore KG-D6 gas fields plans to serially invest $5 billion to reverse falling output. We are planning to invest in a series of projects to develop around four trillion cubic feet of discovered natural gas resources from the block, RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani said in the companys annual report for 2012-13. The field development plan for the R-Series project (in the KG-D6 block) has been submitted to the Government of India for approval. This along with other projects is expected to add incremental production in the next four to five years, he said. The field development plan envisages bringing to production satellite fields in the eastern offshore KG basin block to raise output that has fallen to less than 16 million standard cubic meters per day from a peak of 64 mmscmd reached three years ago.

The next wave of projects in KGD6 block are envisaged to be undertaken over the next three to five years and entail a potential total investment in excess of $5 billion to develop around four trillion cubic feet (TCF) of discovered natural gas resources, RIL said. Of the 18 gas fields in KG-D6 block discovered by the operators, only two (D1 and D3) have been put to production. RIL said the average production from KG-D6 block during 2012-13 was 26 mmscmd of gas and 9,225 barrels of oil per day.

The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time, Ferguson said in a statement. It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so. The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the longterm future of the club remains a bright one, he added. Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both Director and Ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future. Ferguson thanked the players, support staff and the fans for a memorable period. As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. ICC Cricket Committee to OSullivan beats Hawkins for fifth world meet in London May 28-29 snooker title
Dubai The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that its annual Cricket Committee meeting will take place in London May 28-29. The committee will be chaired for the first time by former India captain Anil Kumble, who has succeeded ex-West Indies captain Clive Lloyd. Former England captain Andrew Strauss and ex-India leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan will also attend their first ICC Cricket Committee meeting. Strauss is one of the two Past Player representatives (replacing Ian Bishop) while Sivaramakrishnan is one of the two Current Player representatives (replacing Tim May). The other Current Player representative is former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, who has been on the committee since 2007. Sangakkara and Sivaramakrishnan were recently elected by a vote of the 10 Test captains and will serve on the Cricket Committee for a three-year term from 2013-15. The Cricket Committees remit is to discuss cricket-playing matters and to make recommendations to the ICC Chief Executives Committee and the ICC Board that will meet at Lords during the ICCs annual conference week from June 25-29. London Ronnie OSullivan beat Barry Hawkins 18-12 to win the world title for the fifth time at the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield. The 37-year-old became the first player to win back-to-back Crucible crowns since Stephen Hendry in 1996, reports Xinhua. OSullivan led 15-10 after the afternoon session but Hawkins fought back in the evening with a break of 127. The world 14th-ranked Hawkins took the next with a run of 66 to make it 15-12. But OSullivan sealed the victory in a frightening way, winning last three frames in just 30 minutes. I thought it was a brilliant final, said OSullivan. I put him under a lot of pressure this afternoon, I felt I had to. Tonight he came out all guns blazing and I feared the worst. I had to make my chances count because if I did not then he could have got it back to 15-14. In the final I had everything to lose and nothing to gain. I know how good Barry is - to the outside world they think I should never lose but on the snooker circuit everybody knows how good Barry is. Asked how many events he is likely to play in next year, OSullivan added: I just do not know what is going to happen because things are always changing. Come December or January I will have a much better idea of
what I will be doing. Hawkins said: I put him under as much pressure as I could. But every time I missed an easy ball he punished me. I tried my hardest in that final and I just made a few more mistakes than Ronnie. You cannot afford to do that against a player of his calibre because he is just unbelievable. The way he makes it look so easy is just amazing.

We beat the top seeds but our final opponents were too quick. They played really well, Ghosh told. He and Mouma were leading 7-3 in the third game before losing the next eight points. Sharaths match against Yang Zi had the crowd on the edge of their seats. World No. 69 controlled the first game until the Singaporean made a remarkable to comeback to win the next three. The contest went into the seventh deciding game where Sharath took a crucial 6-4 lead. After a few more fiercely contested points, it was 8-8. Sharath had the advantage of his serve but it was the spectacular forehand retrieve that had him fired up, making it 10-8. He exulted after hitting a sizzling forehand winner. That point which made 10-8 did it for me, said a relieved Sharath. India also won a silver and bronze in the team championships which ended Wednesday. With a day left in the tournament, India has won nine medals, surpassing the last editions tally of seven.

However, the game was overshadowed by fan trouble as both sets of supporters threw fireworks at each other, which Juve coach Antonio Conte and the Atalanta players personally tried to calm down. Palermos defeat meant that Sampdoria are mathematically safe following a 1-1 draw with Catania, in which Lorenzo De Silvestri and Nicolas Spolli scored.
