1) What do you understand by unsymmetrical bending of beams? 2) Define the following (a) Shear Flow (b) Shear Centre (c) Elastic Axis 3) A thin- walled circular tube is subject to a torque T, show that T=2Aq where q is the shear flow and A is the enclosed area. 4) Explain the difference between plate and column buckling. 5) List three functions of a fuselage bulkhead.

6) Explain the bending of a symmetric section subject to a skew load (symmetric/unsymmetric). 7) Find the shear flow distribution for the beam cross-section shown in fig. The rounded corners of the members are approximated by the rectangular areas shown.

11) A beam of Z-section is subjected to a bending moment Mx having its vector directed along the x-axis as shown in fig. Calculate the maximum tensile stress t and maximum compressive stress c, if the moment Mx=4KNm and the dimension are b=90mm, h=180mm and t=15mm.

OR 12) A 80x80x10mm angle section shown in fig is used as a simply supported beam over a span of 2.4m. It carries a load of 400N along the line yc (where c is the centroid). Calculate (i) Stresses at the points A, B, C (ii) Deflection of the beam at mid section and its direction with the load line . (ii) Position of the neutral axis.

The idealized single cell thin-walled tubes shown in fig have a horizontal axis of symmetry. Direct stresses are carried by the booms B1 to B8. While the walls are effective only in carrying shear stress. Calculate the distribution of shear flow around the section. Given B1 =B7 = 2.5 cm2 , B3 =B6 = 4 cm2 and B4 =B5 = 1 cm2

OR 15) A fuselage bulkhead of 1m diameter has 12 stringers equally placed around the section starting from top point. Each stringer area is 6.25 cm2. The bulkhead is subjected to a symmetrical vertical shear load of 10Kn. Find the shear flow around the bulk head.
