The Academic Valedictorian of the Class of 2013


Sydney Rae OShaughnessy, daughter of Terry and Nadine OShaughnessy, is the Class of 2013 Academic Valedictorian, maintaining a 96.85% GPA. Sydney is a two-year member of the Youth Advisory Council (YAC), is the current President of the George S. OBrien National Honor Society and was inducted into the National Honor Society in her junior year. She has served as the Student Council President for the past two years and was a Student Council Representative in her freshman and sophomore years. Sydney has been a two-year representative with the Lewis County Youth Bureau. She is a six-year member of the Varsity Tennis team. Sydney took part in Varsity Track at Carthage Central School, representing Copenhagen Central School. She was a three-year member of the Yearbook Committee, a seven-year member of the Ski Club, was in the Spanish Club, a member of Common G.R.O.U.N.D. volunteer organization during junior year, Book Club her freshman year, a member of the Outing Club her junior year, a Whiz Quiz participant senior year, and has been a student peer tutor during her sophomore and junior years. Sydney has been a Scrubby Bears American Red Cross Hygiene Instructor at CCS her first three years of high school and has been a member of the High School Band in all four years of high school, having an instrumental NYSMMA solo freshman and sophomore years and Instrumental Bi-County her junior year. She participated in school musicals while a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior, also serving as student director junior year. Sydney was named as 7 News at Noons Academic All-Star in February 2013. She attended the Hugh OBrien Youth Leadership Seminar (HOBY) in her sophomore year. Sydney travelled to eight European countries as a youth ambassador representing the United States during the summers of 2011 and 2012 with People-to-People and HOBY, respectively. Sydney has been a member of the West Carthage Volunteer Fire Department for the past two years. Sydney has received the 2012 University of Rochester George Eastman Young Leaders Award (up to $30,000 over four years), the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Computing Medal Award ($24,000 over four years), and the Wells College Leadership Award ($40,000 total). She was also awarded the Wells College Henry Wells Scholarship valued at $15,000 per year (for 4 years). Sydney has been accepted to Ithaca College and awarded the Rod Serling Scholarship in the amount of $15,000 per year and the Ithaca Access Grant in the amount of $10,000. She was also selected to receive the Marist Colleges Presidential Scholarship in the amount of $10,000 (totaling $40,000 over four years). In the fall, Sydney will be continuing her education at Ithaca College, in the Journalism program, where she has been accepted into the Ithaca College Honors Program.

The Academic Salutatorian of the Class of 2013


Rachel Mae Bush-Muncy, daughter of Kevin Muncy and Wanda Bush-Muncy, is the Class of 2013 Academic Salutatorian, maintaining a 96.74% GPA. Rachel is the current Treasurer of the George S. OBrien National Honor Society and was inducted into the National Honor Society in her junior year. Rachel is a four-year class representative of Student Council and has been a member of Lewis County Teen Ambassadors during her freshman, sophomore, junior and senior year in which she served as the groups Treasurer. Rachel has been a peer tutor since her sophomore year and has been a Whiz Quiz member in her junior and senior year. She is a two-year member of the Varsity Tennis team, three-year member of the Varsity Basketball team, member of the Junior Varsity Basketball team, Pee-Wee Basketball coach in her junior and senior year, a four-year member of the Varsity Softball team, member of Varsity Soccer team and a member of the Junior Varsity Soccer team. She was a member of the Majorettes during freshman year. Rachel was a member of the Music Club in her junior year and served at its Secretary. She was a member of the Outdoor Club and Common G.R.O.U.N.D. volunteer organization, Book Club, and Ski Club. Rachel has been a Scrubby Bears American Red Cross Hygiene Instructor at CCS her first three years of high school and has been a member of the High School Marching Band and was a NYSSMA Instrumental Participant during her sophomore and junior years. She was a BiCounty Chorus Participant during her sophomore and junior years and a NYSSMA Vocal Participant as a freshman, sophomore, and junior, also being named a twotime Area All-State Vocal Participant her sophomore and senior year. Rachel participated in school musicals while a sophomore and senior. She attended the Clarkson Universitys Horizons program in her sophomore year. Rachel has been a Relay for Life participant for over four years. She has participated in both the Stone Soup Kitchen staff and St. Marys Turkey dinner for over four years. Rachel has received the 2012 Elmira College Key Award (up to $60,000 over four years), the 2012 Rensselaer Medal Program Award ($60,000 over four years). She has received the Sage Arts Award (up to $15,000 per year), as well as the Sage College of Albanys Trustee Excellence Award in the amount of $15,000. Rachel has been accepted to Elmira College in the Pre-Law program with a major in Business Administration, at the following colleges in their Business Administration program: Sage College of Albany, Clarkson University, Nazareth College, Siena College, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). In the fall, Rachel will be continuing her education at the University at Albany majoring in business and pre-law.
