Bird Walk 8am Join park staff for a bird walk to look for and listen for birds. We hope to see and hear some colorful
summer residents from the tropics; prairie warblers, great crested flycatchers, common yellowthroats, summer tanagers and Indigo buntings. We should also see or hear Bachmans sparrows and red-cockaded woodpeckers. We will walk a half mile to a bird banding station to see how and why birds are caught and banded. Plan on a 1.5 mile round trip walk. Bring insect/tick spray and binoculars.

Bird Banding 8am to 12pm Staff will have mist nets set up all morning off of
the Pine Island Trail Boardwalk. This is one half mile from the park visitor center one way. Stop by to see if any birds are being banded and learn more about Looking For Lichens 11am to 1pm how and why we band birds. Gary Perlmutter and Dr. Eimy Rivas Plata will lead a foray to look for lichens. Learn more about these seldom seen beautiful components of our longleaf forest. Meet at the park office to carpool to two different sites. Plan on being out for 2 hours and be prepared to walk about 1 mile total, off trails in some spots. Bring insect/tick spray, and a hand lens if you have one.

Humming Bird Banding - 2pm to 4pm Hummingbird researcher

Susan Campbell will be banding humming birds at the park office. Susan will discuss hummingbird ecology, her research, and tips on feeding, feeders and native plants that attract hummers. This is a great opportunity to see these tiny birds up close, and maybe even in your hand.

Moth Madness - 7:30pm

Box Turtle Tracking 2pm Want to learn more about the

North Carolina state reptile? Join Dr. John Roe from UNC Pembroke for a sneak peek into the life of a box turtle. Dr. Roe has fitted several turtles at Weymouth Woods with radio-transmitters so he can track them, learn how they respond to prescribed fires in the park, and observe other fascinating behaviors. Youll get to see the equipment that is used by many biologists to conduct this type of research, and venture through the woods to experience it firsthand. Come prepared with long pants, closed-toed shoes, bug spray, and water for this off-trail adventure.

Former TNC field biologist Merrill Lynch will give a presentation on Moths of NC. Moths come in a dazzling array of amazing colors, sizes and shapes. Merrill has identified over 1,100 species of moths in his yard in Watauga County, NC and will share tips on attracting, observing and identifying moths. Be warned: observing moths can become addictive! After the talk we will go outside to observe various methods used to attract moths and other cool insects.
