If youre a stranger round these parts, listen up: youll want to polish your boots, pick out your shiniest belt buckle and hang on to your hat, because West St. Paul Days is comin to town. The 23rd annual West St. Paul Days, this year themed Wild, Wild West St. Paul, is sure to bring a jingle-jangling, hattipping, hee-hawing good time to the city from May 14 to May 19. Whether you like to gawk at the parade, take a few rides at the carnival or just chew the cud with the townsfolk, the festival is renowned for its array of offerings guaranteed to please everyone from the young colts and fillies on up to the most wizened cowpuncher.

Celebrate West St. Paul is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization. These folks not only work hard in the months before the festival, they have fun planning events for the community to enjoy. According to Kathy Maher, wife of Dennis and director of the Royal Ambassador program, the best way to ensure the festival continues to improve is to get involved. Were always looking for more volunteers, Kathy says. Theres just a handful of us really that put a lot of time. Short of using a lasso, however, the only way to gather volunteers is to show them how all that hard work pays off in one of the most fun-filled festivals to hit the metro. So if youre ready, saddle up and hang on, because youre in for a wild, wild ride. up with the city council member representing your ward, ask all those burning questions you have for city staff and check out an assortment of presentations on city programs. To sweeten the deal, the city will provide free hot dogs, lemonade and minidoughnuts to guests. If you already know the city inside and out, hobnob with neighbors while the kids enjoy various games and festivities. For more information, check out the citys website at www.cityofwsp.org.

ers, schools to parents and students, elected officials to constituents and new neighbors to the community. West St. Paul Days has kind of stuck with a home-grown philosophy, explains Dennis Maher, a long-time volunteer in charge of this years parade. Everybodys kind of itching to get out meeting people and representing their city. But make no mistake: if you come to West St. Paul Days fixing solely to have fun, youll find its a hard target to miss. Between cheese curds, cotton candy, live music, ornate floats, the sweat and dust of the softball tournament and the elegance of the Royal Ambassadors coronation, theres plenty to spur you on through the weekend.

Rides that wont leave you bowlegged

No bucking broncos here, but from May 14 to May 20 you can ride just about anything else for just a fistful of tickets at the carnival. The carnival opens from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. If you have the fortitude to hang onto your lunch through all those rides, there will be plenty of fair food worth eating: cotton candy, caramel apples, mini-doughnuts, cheese curds, funnel cake, corn dogs and

rust and confidence are key in the coin industry, and customers from all over Minnesota and the U.S. have found an extraordinary guide in Roger Westerling of The Truman Company.
Devoting himself to the rare coin and precious metal trade for well over three decades, Westerlings commitment to the customer is second to none. From their Roseville office, he and his associates offer purchases and appraisals for estates, banks, insurance companies and individuals. My staff and I are dedicated to helping people preserve and grow their wealth, Westerling explains. Thats why The Truman Company offers personalized service tailored to each individual. Introduced to the business by his Uncle Truman, a young Roger became enamored with coins. This nearly-lifelong passion encouraged Westerling to open his own business under the Truman name. Every time he visited my family, he gave me a coin that had an interesting history. His hope was that I would develop a real interest in rare and unusual coins, and it worked, Westerling says with a smile. Westerling visited Minnesota to appraise a collection in 1998, and was so touched by the welcome he received he decided to move both his home and business to St. Paul. He currently works with about 3,000 clients around the country. Westerling is a life member of the American Numismatic Association and holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. His knowledge can reassure people that theyre insuring or pricing such items correctly. Im more than happy to visit a home or bank to review a collection, Westerling notes. Theres a mar-

ket for everything! Though old coins appreciate gradually, precious metals have undergone dramatic spikes over the past decade in value, Westerling adds. From 2002 to 2013, the value of silver went up by 668 percent and gold by 595 percent. Many of Westerlings customers are currently transferring individual retirement account funds from banks to a precious metal IRA. I honestly think the prices for gold and silver will continue to rise throughout our lifetime, while the U.S. dollar declines, Westerling explains. Transferring to a precious metal IRA can be an excellent investment. Customers will feel at home in The Truman Company office, where they might even meet

The West St. Paul Royal Ambassadors program is much more than tiaras and sashes. Organizers explain that candidates go through a month of interviews, community-service activities and West St. Paul Days events. Theyre considered for their volunteer work, educational ambitions and skills in leadership and communication. The young women and girls selected as ambassadors -- Miss West St. Paul and her two princesses, Junior Miss West St. Paul and Little Miss West St. Paul -- have a full slate of activities not just during West St. Paul

These members of royalty earn their crowns

Days or the summer, but all year long. Throughout the year, the Royal Ambassadors volunteer in various local roles, such as visiting residents in senior living facilities, assisting with the Optimist Clubs annual spelling bee and participating in Library Days at the Wentworth Public Library. Theyre especially appreciated at activities with youngsters, where they serve as great role models. Royal Ambassadors also travel near and far to represent West St. Paul at area festivals in other cities. They appear, at a minimum, 50 times during the year of their reign.

Smiles on wheels: thats the West St. Paul Royalty float in last years West St. Paul Days parade. Young women and girls learn poise and presentation in the local program and represent West St. Paul in many civic events.

Parkinson will be joined by Grand Marshal Lynn Mortensen, owner of Southview Garden Center. Southview Garden Center is celebrating its 50th anniversary in West St. Paul this summer.

Hittin the (parade) trail

Forget high noon -- May 18 peaks at 1 p.m. with the West St. Paul Grand Parade, the (official) first parade of the summer season in the metro. Because its the first, West St. Pauls parade is well-known for its strong turnout from royalty and traveling floats from throughout the region. This years parade rolls along South Robert Street from Emerson Avenue to Haskell Street. Make sure to line up early to get a good view, because the highlights will be plentiful. This years celebrity marshal will be Nancee Parkinson, named Miss West St.

Fun for young cowpokes

Theres a number of ways to keep the good times rolling after the floats have finished their runs. Head to Rock the Barn at the Dodge Nature Center from 3 to 8 p.m. and enjoy raffle drawings, barn tours, wagon rides, face painting and more, as well as live music from Four Legg Fish, Choo Choo Bob and Brother Seamus. Admission is $20 for member families or $25 for nonmember families. Kids 2 and young get in free. You can also try to finish the perfect day with a perfect score at the Optimist Club Bowling Blast from 3 to 6 p.m. at West Side

Lanes. Admission is $10 and will earn you shoes, two games and tickets for prizes. Its not exactly a dude ranch, but you can find plenty of dudes (and gals) admiring the raw horsepower at the Top 20 Car Show at the Commercial Club from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Get some vittles for yourself when Darnell & Louis BBQ Chicken & Ribs starts serving at noon. Make sure you wipe the sauce off your face in time for more live music from City Vibe from 2 to 6 p.m.

Ridin into the sunset

Gear up for the final day of the festival with a hearty meal at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. Stop by the West St. Paul YMCA from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. for your fill of sausage, coffee, juice, and of course pancakes. Finally, slick back your hair and cinch up your bolo tie and head to St. Croix Lutheran High School at 1 p.m. for the crowning of the 2013 West St. Paul Royal Ambassadors. You can watch your candidates, from Little Miss all the way up to Miss West St. Paul, wow the audience and

lay claim to their tiaras. Bid farewell to the 2012 royalty who represented the city so well and cheer on the newcomers for the year ahead. From there, you can squeeze a few last rides in at the carnival, or perhaps invite a few neighbors back to sit on the porch and wind down for the evening. But know this: as you watch the floats, rides and decorations packed up and the organizers ride off into the sunset, you can rest assured that the wild spirit lives on in the city, and that West St. Paul Days will be back again.
