Read the previous chart again, and answer the following questions.
Look at each pair of questions. What do the direct question and the indirect question have in common? What happens to the auxiliary is in questions 1, 2 and 5 in the indirect questions? What happens to the auxiliary do and did question 4 and 8 in the indirect questions? What happened to the verb in the direct question number 8? Look at the indirect question in number 3. How can it be answered? Why? Look at the indirect questions in number 6 and 7. Do they have question mark? Why?

In order for you to get the answers divide in two different groups, one for the answers about A and the other for the ones in B. While one of the groups discusses about the possible answer of their exercise the other will listen to their answers. Then, exchange the information.

Listen to the previous famous people being interviewed and check your answers. Can you identify the indirect question in each of the interviews?

Imagine you are about to interview one of these famous people, what would you ask him/her? Work with a partner and write down in your notebooks indirect questions about their countries and their lives there, then compare your questions with those of other students.

Your teacher will give you a card which will contain the description of your character. It can be either, a famous extravagant actor from a foreign country or a journalist trying to interview him/her. Wait for your card and good luck!

A holiday to remember

Read the following mail that a girl has written to a friend. Has something similar ever happened to you?

Look at the underlined words, they are called phrasal verbs.

According to the context in the mail, match the phrasal verbs with their definitions.

Write on the cardboard short sentences to help you remember what happened. You can include some of the phrasal verbs youve just checked! Ex: When we were getting off the plane I almost fall down!

C Read all the phrasal verbs once more. Then answer the following questions. They function as one of the parts of speech, what is it? If necessary, read the mail again. With the exception of number 15, how many particles do they have? What part of speech are they? How many particles does number 15 have and what part of speech are they? Look at numbers 9 and 15 in the mail. What happens with the word that follows? Why? What kind of words follow the other phrasal verbs? Some phrasal verbs can have literal and idiomatic meaning. If in the mail numbers 1, 3 and 14 are literal and the rest idiomatic. What do literal and idiomatic mean? D This is what Anne will tell Sarah in their meeting. Pay attention to the phrasal verbs, write L if their meaning is literal or I for idiomatic. Discuss their meaning with your partners.

Some phrasal verbs that take an object can be written in a separate way. They are called separable phrasal verbs.

According to the previous chart, what part of speech are the words that can be the object of a phrasal verb? In what cases are they in the middle and after the phrasal verbs?

Take a look at the following sentences, they all describe Anns holiday. Then answer the questions. 1. During her flight, there was a guy who got dizzy inside the plane; all he wanted was to get off it. 2. When Ann visited Venice, she was impressed by the gondolas; she couldnt wait to get on them. 3. After she told the guy she met that she would go out of his life, she came across him again. 4. Ann thinks her trip was incredible. She had been looking forward to it a long time ago. Take a look at the words in bold. If they are object pronouns, why are they written at the end of the phrasal verb? Are these sentences breaking the rule you just checked?

Some phrasal verbs that take an object are always written together. They are called inseparable phrasal verbs.

Around the world

Read the following sentences; some of them have grammar mistakes. Find them and correct them. 1. Imagine you travelled abroad somewhere and you have just returned. Write a mail to your best friend telling him/her how your holidays were. Write from 80 to 100 words and use at least 8 of the phrasal verbs you checked in this unit. Ask your teacher to give you a photocopy of your e-mail page! Take the mail on page 65 as an example.
