 AFTRA POINTS TO REMEMBER

1. In accordance with a rule adopted by the National Board of AFTRA,

members may not sign any representation agreements with
Agents unless such agent is franchised with AFTRA. Non­
franchised agents are not authorized to negotiate for or procure
employment in AFTRA's fields.

2. AFTRA Agents are required to use the Standard AFTRA Exclusive

Agency Contracts when signing for services within AFTRA's fields.
A copy must be filed with AFTRA and a copy given to you. If your
contract is not filed with AFTRA within a specified time it may be
held to be invalid.

3. Agents franchised with AFTRA may not request fees for

registration, headsheets, portfolios, or as a condition to procure·
employment. Nor may they instruct clients to use a specifie.
photographer. The choice of photographer is up to the Artist and
cannot be a condition upon which agency representation is based.

4. Pursuant to AFTRA's .Regulations Governing Agents, you are

'entitled to submit a written request to your Agent, once every four
weeks, for information on what efforts the Agent has rendered on
your behalf regarding auditions and procuring employment.

5. All payments for your services should be made directly to you

unless you have given written authorization for payments to be

remain in effect for a maximum of three (3) years, or until your
contract with that agency expires, or until rescinded by you in
writing. Please read all check authos and contracts carefully
before signing or initialing.

6. When terminating an AFTRA Exclusive Agency Contract you must

send a letter of termination to the Agent and a copy of the letter to
AFTRA. The letter must include your name (and any A.K.A.s),
social security number, the name of the agency being terminated,
and any new agency you may have. Please be very specific. The
copy you send to AFTRA may be faxed to the Agency Department
at (323) 634-8190.

 AFTRA COMMISSIONS

Commissions may not exceed 100/0 of the artist's compensation

f9r each separate engagement.

Conlmission must be assessed separately against the

compensation for each engagement. Lumping fees for more than one
engagE!ment for the purpose of computing commissions is not
permitted.· Also, 100/0 commission may not be .taken on the total.
amollilf of a check if the total amount already includes the agent's
commission.

Except as indicated below, no commission is permitted on

payments which shall reduce the artist-s netcompensation for any
engagement below the applicable minimums ("scale payments")
established by AFrRA in any collective bargaining agreement.

1. Television Commercials, Non,:"broadcast, Industrials, and

Interactive - commission may·be taken on scale payments
for persons other than singers, dancers and extras,.and in
geographical areas other than Albany, Atranta,Boston,
Buffalo, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Xndianapolis, .
Louisvillel Omaha, Peorial Pittsburgh, Racine/Kenosha,
Rochester, Schenectady, and Stamford.

2. The first two domestic free TV program rerUns (on

primetime network, syndication, non-network, or non­
primetime network programs) if:
• The employment contract for such program is
substantially negotiated on or after 7/01/02
• The program first airs after 7/01/02
• The run occurs within three years of the first air date
of the program
• The performers check is more than $100.00
• The original employment was 1100/0 of scale
(This does not apply to daytime dramas or bona fide news
programs)
 TIPS ON GETI1NG AN AGENT

Let's face it, trying to get an agent in this town is no day at the beach (unless, of course, you
happen to run into one there). There are hundreds of talent agencies of various types and sizes out
there. Finding the one agent that is right for you is a formidable task. It involves dedication,
persistence. .. and a game plan!

TARGETING AGENTS

•. Determine what your interests and needs are. Then target those agencies on the
AFTRA franchised agency list who indicate they represent your type and the field
you are interested in. The agents on this .list are signed to AFTRi\'S Regulations
Governing Agents (Rule 12-C). TIris means they are licensed by the State of
California and are accountable to AFTRA. .

•. . There are publications for sale at such theatrical bookstores as Samuel French and·
Larry Edmunds which provide information on the background of the talent agencies
.in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas. Be sure to check with the unions to
verify that the agency is union franchised. Remember, AFTRA members are
required to sign only with a franchised agent.

e. To find out the clients of a particular agency you can check the client list at the
Academy Players Directory.

e. Ask your performer friends which agent they are with and see if they can put in a
word for you with their agent, or refer you to another reputable agent.

GET INVOLVED

•. Performers often fmd agents through friends and fellow performers. Get involved
with activities that will put you in touch with other performers, such as workshops
and AFTRA membership meetings, casting showcases, and special seminars. For

•. Agents want experience. Many agents will consider taking on new clients only if
they have a strong theatrical background. Get involved in a play or a showcase and
send invitations to your targeted agents. Many agents periodically attend plays and
showcases to scout new talent.

• Even without an agent, there are things you can do to get jobs on your own: Check
the Trades (Daily Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Drama-Logue) for casting calls,
obtain an AFTRA show sheet and contact casting agencies directly, call AFTRA's
Casting & Information line (323) 634-8263.
 SUBNnTAPPROPRIATELY

•. All resumes are not created equal. Tailor your resume to the specific area of

representation in which you are interested (i.e. If you are looking for a commercial

agent, list your commercials credits first). Always keep your resume current, and

remember to include all union affiliations.

•. Submit appropriate photos. Commercial agents require different types of photos

from theatrical agents. If you have a film or tape of yourself you may want to

submit it either in addition to or in lieu ofa photo.

•. An audio demo tape should generally not exceed 3 minutes. The purpose ofthe tape

is to display your style, quality and range.

•. Always send your submission to a specific person at the agency. Indicate in your

cover letter that yo,u are seeking representation and state why you would like to be

represented by them.

•. Keep notes of the agents you submitted your pictures and resume to, as well as the

date ofsubmission and any response or comments they may have had.

INTERVIEW YOUR AGENT

Now that you've got that interview, make the most of it. If you've done your homework you'll
already know hislher reputation in the industry, connections, background, possibly some clients.
But it is a good idea to check these out again. Ask questions. INTERVIEW YOUR AGENT.
Your agent works for you and you work for your agent. The ideal relationship will be satisfYing
and beneficial for both parties. .

SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING CIDLDREN

Parents; please bear in mind that this industry is highly competitive. It's physically and emotionally
demanding on everyone, but particularly so on children. It is advised not to get children involved
unless they really want to get involved, and unless you are willing to devote the great deal of time
and effort necessary to your child's career. If so, take full responsibility by reading all contracts and
documents thoroughly andfarniliarizing yourself with special regulations and laws that apply to
children.
