Chapter 1 1. Equality 7-2521 is our narrator and protagonist.

He is 6, which is an issue in the society because it is different and above the majority. He claims to be born with a curse, which can be interpreted as a gifted mind that gets him in trouble for have individual thoughts. He is curious and overly thoughtful, and is given the job of Street Sweeper. Union 5-3992 is a pale boy with below average intelligence. He is sickly, and often gripped by convulsions. He was assigned to be a Street Sweeper. International 4-8818 is a boy who Equality considers his friend. He is a charismatic and comedic, and also an artist. These traits make him too individualistic for the Councils taste, and so he ended up as a Street Sweeper as well. The council members are all extremely old, stern men and women, who rarely smile, and are respected by all The first physical setting is underground in a tunnel, with no light aside from a single candle. The setting overall appears to be a futuristic utopia with no free thought or will, and extremely rigid enforcement. Most of the buildings are extremely utilitarian and simple. Equality is an extremely gifted man living in a utopian society where individuality is frowned upon. His assigned job is a Street Sweeper, and in his work he finds an underground tunnel. His friend, International, is the only other person to know of it, but keeps the secret for Equality. Equality stays underground for three hours each night studying the universe and making scientific discoveries with stolen materials that were discarded by the Home of Scholars. Is there reasoning as to why Equality was assigned as Street Sweeper? Did they realize his potential if he was put elsewhere, or was it merely coincidental? How old is the Council exactly, and how long has society been like this?

Chapter 2

1. Liberty 5-3000 is a woman who works in the fields. She has long blonde hair, hence why Equality thinks of her as the Golden One. She is brave and more independent than most in the society. Fraternity 2-5503 is a quiet, sensitive boy and Solidarity 9-6347 is a boy with nightmares, and both are examples of the unrest among the men. The Transgressor of the Unspeakable Word was a man who somehow discovered the word forbidden by the Council for any man to know. He is tall and strong, with blonde hair and blue eyes, and was sentenced to death and executed years before the current events of the story. 2. This chapter begins about a mile out from the center of the City, on the street that leads outwards from it 3. In the second chapter, Equality meets a woman he prefers over all others named Liberty 5-3000 who he communicates with while street sweeping by where she works everyday. He begins to notice the sorrow in his brothers compared to the joy he has for his own existence. He also continually thinks of the Forbidden Forest and recalls old legends of men disappearing into it

along with memories of a man who discovered the Unspeakable Word and was punished with death by the Council. 4. I cant help but wonder if the Transgressor was related to Equality, perhaps even his father. Did Equality single out Liberty or was it the other way around? Do they even know? Chapter 3 1. No new characters 2. This chapter entirely occurs in the subway tunnel Equality discovered 3. Equality first writes of his discovery of electricity, though he does not know the name for it. He has been experimenting with anything he can find in the tunnel, especially the various wires and metals left over from the Unmentionable. Times He has known of it for two years, but has just now decided that he has enough data to do anything with his findings. 4. What other things did he experiment with during the past two years? Did he only focus on electricity? I think his mistake is not involving International, or finding anyone else he would be able to explain it to before going to the Council. Chapter 4 1. No new characters 2. This takes place again a mile out from the city, right next to the field where Liberty works 3. Equality and Liberty 5-3000 meet in this Chapter, and tell one another of how they call each other in their minds. Liberty 5-3000 reveals that she thinks of Equality as the Unconquered, and the connection between them is strengthened greatly. Since there are no others around, she fetches him water and he drinks it from her hands, then kisses them. 4. His name is perfect, and proven entirely later in the novel. His mind, body and spirit and free of the collective mind that enslaves everyone else. Has Gaea ever mentioned him to anyone else? Is there anyone among the women who might be as enlightened as Prometheus? Chapter 5 1. No new characters 2. In this chapter we are back to Equality being alone in the underground tunnel. 3. Equality has now discovered how to use electricity to create a steady light; an early light bulb. He without question is determined to show the Council when they meet a month from them, and confess to everything, convinced he will be forgiven in exchange for his gift of electric light. The chapter ends with him pondering the separation of his creation and his ability to create it, and finally wondering what he himself looks like. 4. Is his desire to see himself vanity, or could it be considered as such? Also, his pride should be in both his hands and his creation. HE himself wrought it, both his hands and his mind. Chapter 6 1. This chapter involves the Council of the Home of the Street Sweepers, and the members of which appear to be emotionless and indifferent. They think of nothing but the law. The other men involved in this chapter are the two young and strong men who whip Equality, and the judges who repeatedly visit him asking where he has been 2. This chapter mostly takes place in the Palace of Corrective Detention, a building as plain as the others, but meant entirely for the punishment of transgressors of the law. The room used is empty aside from the pole that the transgressor is tied to while they are whipped. 3. Equality was discovered by the Council the same night he discovered electric light, and was questioned by the Council of the Home of the Street Sweepers where he was. When he refused to answer, he was whipped extensively and locked into a prison cell in the Palace of Corrective

Detention and repeatedly asked where he was. He continues to refuse and escapes the first chance he gets and returns to his underground tunnel, where he looks forward to the next day when he presents his light to the Council. 4. Are the bored expressions faked? Or are they concealing malice in an attempt to prevent him from realizing why they want him under control at all times? What do the men whipping him think as they do so? Chapter 7 1. Various council members are introduced, including Collective 0-0009, the oldest and wisest of the council, International 1-5537, Solidarity 8-1164, Alliance 6-7349, Harmony 9-2642, Unanimity 2-1193, and Similarity 5-0306. They all lack personality, and are all old and rigid 2. The actual setting during this chapter is in the Uncharted Forest, deep, dark, and cut off from the City. 3. Equality presented his light to the Council, and was greeted with fear and scorn. They tell him that his invention is evil since he created it alone and it was done without every single man working together on it. They attempt to destroy the box, but Equality takes it and runs away from them into the Uncharted Forest. The chapter ends with him there, starving and completely alone, with his only regret being that he will never see the Golden One again. 4. When he says, old now, young this morning, does he mean old in an aged and tired sense, or that hes finally grown up? Were any of the Council members reluctant? Were any possibly interested in the light? Chapter 8 1. No new characters 2. This takes place in the Uncharted Forest, but during the day so there is light. There is a stream that Equality is able to use as a mirror and a water source. 3. Equality is on his own in the forest, and is able to hunt and cook for himself, which gives him an empowered feeling. He experiments with his newfound freedom, and ability to laugh and make noise and do as he pleases. While going deeper into the forest he comes upon a stream in which he sees his own reflection for the first time, and realizes the huge difference in him and his brothers. 4. Does he ever fear anything while in the woods? Does he still miss Liberty? Chapter 9 Although we have met her before, the Golden One is reintroduced in this chapter, as a strong and independent person. She fearless and willing to leave the City behind and be free with Equality. Still in the Uncharted Forest On his second day in the forest, Equality was surprised to find the Golden One, who followed him and is eager to be with him. They live a steady life in the forest, using bows and arrows to hunt game, and making fires to keep predators away at night. The chapter ends with the Golden One telling Equality she loves them, but is frustrated by a lack of way of referring to him singularly. Is there actually anything dark and evil in the forest? Is it possible he may run into others that have fled the City before? Did they find other Cities? Chapter 10 1. No new characters

2. The setting is the house from the Unmentionable Times. It had large glass windows almost completely covering it, which makes it almost sound like a skyscraper, but its nowhere near as tall. It is in the midst of a mountain range. 3. Equality and the Golden One found an abandoned house from the Unmentionable Times after days of climbing through mountains and forests. The house is filled with all sorts of inventions theyve never seen and many books, which they are determined to go through and learn from. They call the house their home and decide that will stay there forever, and that it will be just theirs. 4. Do they ever run into problems reading a fantasy or science fiction novel that they take to be realistic? What sort of water source do they use to support themselves? Chapter 11 1. Monologue 2. No specified setting 3. Equality has in his readings discovered the word I and makes use of it frequently. He has been enlightened and speaks of how his own happiness and well-being are at the center of his own focus, and that he has free will to use how he pleases. He ends by stating that individuals are not evil, and that we is evil because it brings people down to lower levels. 4. Does he ever refer to himself and Gaea as a we? I wish we could see her opinion on all of this, whose happiness does she focus on more? Hers or his? Chapter 12 1. Monologue 2. No setting 3. Equality continues to speak about the power of the individual, and explains that he and The Golden Ones granted themselves names, Prometheus and Gaea, respectively. Prometheus has read the manuscripts and learned of electricity and many other things from the Unmentionable Times. He decides that one day he will go back and try to enlighten the men and women left behind in the City, and hopes that one day all humanity will be free from we. He plans that his own home will be the center of the new world he will create with free-will, and that everyone will know and understand the meaning of the term, Ego. 4. Just thought Id comment on the apparent irony in Gaeas old name, since liberty was exactly the opposite of what they had. She was never truly free until after she left and took a new name. Do they ever discover music? Does the house have any old instruments? And what about other art forms?
