Sarel van der Merwe

Audi Sport South Africa

Audi South Africa, same livery as the Trans Am cars in 1988

The Audi 100 was called the Audi 500 in South Africa, and the Trans Am cars used the name 500 Turbo in SA. This despite the race cars actually being based on the Audi 200. The 100 (500) was a more important model in SA. They stuck a 100 grill onto the front of the car. Sarel was Class A champion in 1989. Sarel used Chriss car during the second race of the Goldfields event in 1990, thus the Bosal car ran with the number A1 in one race. Sarels engine seized in the first race, he was in the championship hunt thus he used his team mates car (chassis #1) for race 2 on the day (bottom picture)

Terrys first season with an Audi, he won the 1992 Championship. Both team cars started 1991 with the aerodynamic package as they ran in the USA in 1988. During the season they switched to the modified rear wings The 1991 livery can be distinguished from the 1990 livery by the Yellow Southern Sun logo on the front splitter General 1991 note, towards the end of 1991 one of the original Audi 90 IMSA GTOs was sent to SA. The car was studied by the local engineers and this was the basis for the building of the two S4 GTOs during 1992. Can see the teams two other cars in the background of the photo.

Terry drove this car for the entire 1992 season except for the final round of the season were he drove the S4 GTO. The car started off in the Audi colours of 1988. They got the Rothmans sponsorship later in the year and they also switched from Mobil 1 to Engen sponsorship. Engen still sponsors the Audis run by Terry Moss in SA to this day.

HansJoachim Stuck

First: Red and Silver Bosal Later: Rothmans Colours, with blue banner on windscreen

Stuck raced the car on its debut during the second last round of the 1992 season at Killarney circuit in Cape town winning both races. Only one S4 raced in Cape Town. He also raced at the final round at Kyalami with the S4 in Rothmans colours. Terry also raced a S4 at Kyalami, however Stucks S4 had the rear splitter on his car, this had not been added to Terrys S4 at this time. Terry was in the running for the Championship title, hence he used the second S4 at the final round. He missed out on the overall title, but did win the Class A championship. His car ran without the rear splitter. Note: These two cars can be distinguished by black rear wings. The S4s had white rear wings during 1993 and 1994.
