CASE STUDY LOUISE BOWDEN

Louise achieves her ambition through essential skills

Despite reading history at University (and gaining a good qualification), Louise Bowden found she had trouble with her Essential Skills, a problem associated with her issues with dyscalculia. Hoping to enhance her job prospects Louise began a course with Community Education to try and achieve her ambition to work as a Teaching Assistant. Louises confidence has grown considerably and she credits this to her progress within numeracy; an area she thought she would never grasp. Her hard work has finally paid off and Louise now works as an Assistant Support Worker for Reach Independent Living Services. Being unemployed can really knock your confidence, says Louise but by returning to learning, and facing my issues I feel positive and capable of achieving my goals.

Family Storytelling Weekend 18 -19 May

In every culture in the world the sharing of stories between generations forms a fundamental part of life and learning how to live it. Stories help us to make sense of the world as adults as well as in childhood. We hope the weekends activities will include traditional storytelling, animation, digital storytelling, writing stories, tweeting them and many more activities. Look out for what is happening in your area or winging its way to you through the air by checking our Family Storytelling Weekend link at www.niacedc.org.uk
