AFPhaslaunchedtheObamasFailingAgendaTourinthreepartsofthecountrytoeducatecitizens aboutbadpoliciesthatarebeingpursuedbythisAdministrationandtoputgrassrootspressureonthe administrationandotherpolicymakerstochangecourse. Withthelaunchofthebustour,therearealreadysomelessonstobelearnedthatIwouldliketoshare.I havehadthechancetospeakwithseveralstatedirectorsabouttheirexperiences,andherearesometips forthoseofyouinvolvedinthebustour: BeSuretheSpeakersHavetheSpeakerGuidanceandUnderstandTheseEventsareAbout ObamasPolicies,NotHimPersonallyandCertainlyNotAboutElections.Everyoneshouldbe focusedonPresidentObamaspolicies,notonhimpersonally.Speakersshouldnotdiscussthepersonal characterofPresidentObamaorhisqualificationsorfitnessforoffice.Thegoalofthebustouristoput grassrootspressureonpolicymakerstosupportpoliciesthatadvanceeconomicfreedom. IfSpeakersareNoncompliant,BeProactiveinCorrectingThem(whilebeingrespectfultothe speaker).OneofourspeakersrecentlytoldtheaudiencethatAFPistryingtodefeatPresidentObama andthateveryoneshouldgototheAFPphonebanksandparticipateintheAFPdoortodooreffortto helpdefeatPresidentObamainNovember.ThatspeakerreceivedtheSpeakerGuidanceaheadoftime andwasbriefedbeforehand,butclearlywentoffthereservation.AFPcandoeverythingtopreparethe speaker,butsometimestheydogooffmessagethroughnofaultofAFP.Inthosecases,itisimportant thatAFPcorrecttherecord.Inthisspecificsituation,thewaytohandlethiswouldhavebeenforAFPto getupafterthespeaker(whowascompliantattimes)andwhilebeingrespectfultothespeaker,remind theaudiencethatactuallyAFPsbustourisnotaboutelections,butisaboutObamaspoliciesthatneedto changeandthatvolunteersatthephonebanksanddoortodooractivitiesarehelpinguspromote economicfreedom,notinfluenceelections.Ofcourse,ifaspeakerisbeinggrosslynoncompliantandnot lettingup,youwillneedtouseyourbestjudgmentwhetheritistimetogetoutthehookandconcludetheir talkprematurely. citizens,notnecessarilyvoters.Whenreferringtovoters,thepublicandthemediawillautomatically assumethatAFPistryingtoinfluencevotersandelectionswhenAFPsissueadvocacyeffortsdonot speaktoelections.Thesamegoesforelectoraltermssuchaselection,campaign,orNovember(oreven theambiguousinthenext60days).AFPistryingtoinfluencepolicytoday,notanelectionin60daysor onacertaindayinNovember. ExpecttobeRecorded.Atmanyofourbusstops,membersofthepublichaverecordedthe speechesandpostedthemonYouTube.Alwaysexpectthatyoureventisgoingtoberecordedandthat thosewhoopposeAFParegoingtoattempttousethosevideostoportrayAFPanditsactivitiesina negativeway.Theywillpainttheirinaccuratenarrativesobecarefulnottoplayintothatnarrative. ReportNonCompliantSpeakersToTheLegalTeam.Wehaveinsertedlanguageinallofour contractswithspeakersthattheymustbecomplaintasitrelatestostickingtopublicpolicyissues,andnot beingpartisanortalkingabouttheelectionorcandidates.Thecontractssaythatfailuretobecompliantis abreachofthecontractandwillresultintermination.Weneedfeedbackfromyouifspeakersarenot complyingwiththeserequirements.Maybeallthatisneededisaconversationwiththemtoremindthem oftheirobligationandwheretheywentastray.However,theremaybeinstanceswheretheriskthey createrequiresthatwemustterminatethecontract.In2010,wehadtoinformaspeakerthatduetotheir noncompliancethatwecouldnolongerutilizethemasaspeaker.Theyhadprovidedassurancesthat afterbeingnoncompliantthattheywouldadheretotherulesgoingforward,buttheydidnot,andwehadto cuttieswiththem.
