History of English Language

We can divide English language history to three main parts: .Old English .Middle English .Early Modern English Old English: The first people to came to England were Celtics they spoke Celtic language Then in 5th century the Angles Saxons came to Britain these Germanic tribes were composed from three groups: Angles, Saxons and Jutes so the very source of English language is the Germanic. The Anglo Saxons were fierce they were called God's wrath towards Britain. The word England is combined from Engla-land The word English came from Englisc Mann Wif Hs Mete Feohtan Broding Norawing The tribes were pagan (no religion believes) From 6th century until 8th century there was a movement of Christianity (christen movement) and this period Latin was introduced into Old English because Latin was the language of Christianity (Germanic + Latin). Some Latin words add to Old English: Church, Priest, Candle, Spirit, Angel. From 8th century to 10th century Vikings came to British islands to plunder (stilling violently) the language of Vikings at that period was Old Norse. Some words from Old Norse: Leg, Sky, Law, to take. Man Woman House Food Fight

Middle English: From 11th century until 1066. Guillaume (William ) won the battle of Hastings against king Harold, William was given the title of the Conqueror " William The Conqueror". In that period the rolling class, the nobility, the government, the law and the civilized behavior spoke French. Some French word add to English: Army, court, defense, tax, faith, prison. The peasant continue spoke English 1066 -1200, the peasant worked on the land and reared (to rise) sheep, cows, swine. The French speaking upper classes ate mutton, beef, pork. The middle English with its English version of French went throw considerable changes before giving the modern form of English. Three big changes was marked(Sound, syntexic, lexical). 1.Sound Changes: 1.a. Vowels change: Old English /hu:s/ Long vowel /wi:f/ 1.b. Sound disappeared: Old English Nicht /nxt/ Modern English Night /nat/ Modern English /has/ Diphthong /waf/

1.c. Metathesis: It is the reversal in position of two adjoining sounds. Old English Bridd Hros 1.d. Epenthesis: It is the addition of the sound to the middle of the word.
