Summary of MIMOS Research Centres ADVANCED INFORMATICS CENTRE

The ultimate goal of MIMOS Advanced Informatics Centre is to develop innovative engines/software libraries and modules for the assembly of commercial applications in physical security, intelligent surveillance, biometrics and resource management. Pattern Recognition: Through our efforts in applied research, we aim to offer on our technology shelf, localized, cost effective and robust solutions which include current, as well as emerging, surveillance and biometric technologies. Imaging: The results of our applied research may be used in the development of intelligent imaging solutions which will help extend the capability of physical security monitoring beyond the often inefficient manual (human) processing. Using the technology platform we are developing, it will be possible to monitor and/or authenticate friends and foes across a wider perimeter in a highsecurity environment against unspecific intrusions or threats. Complex Systems: Complex systems are found in all areas of nature but increasingly they are being created by humans in transport, in the economy and in the information and communications sectors. One particular area of interest for us is in resource management for large systems with multiple, often conflicting constraints. We are developing proof-of-concepts for resource management solutions that are capable of effectively managing resource capacity and allocation. Our work in resource management can be applied primarily in areas such as grid computing or any other situations where there is intense, and often conflicting competition for limited but valuable resources. Our aim is to offer technology platforms which will deliver technology according to market needs.

COMMUNICATION NETWORKS & SOLUTIONS CENTRE

The Communication Networks & Solutions Centre aims to bring to realisation the vision of Ubiquitous Network Society in Malaysia and the whole world. The centre conducts research in areas of networking, mobile computing infrastructure and solutions, with an emphasis on designing, implementing, and evaluating network systems, protocols, and applications. We are also responsible for formulating an R&D strategy for providing a full-fledged ubiquitous networks and for preparing the necessary architecture and infrastructure to bring this to reality. We are divided into 4 research areas:

Ubiquitous Communications: * Establishing practical ubiquitous networks that permit the use of a wide range of equipment to connect with high-quality networks and to exchange information with anybody, anywhere, at any time and with any type of device. Fixed Mobile Convergence: * Develop and define next generation architecture that combines mobile communications with WiFi/WiMax and fixed communication networks. Next Generation Internet: * Develop next-generation Internet platform, applications and solutions, which will serve as the networking infrastructure in the coming era including Mobile IPv6. Applications and Solutions: * Identify future applications, services and solutions that cover the multimedia and broadcasting technologies.

CYBERSPACE SECURITY CENTRE

Today typical computing platforms lack the most important aspect -- trust. Past security solutions are not normally integrated into the Operating System (OS) kernel of a computer. They come in the form of standard unsafe OS kernels, which are then given enhanced protection by several skins of protection such as virus scanners, firewalls and others. It has been shown that these external protection mechanisms are barely protective enough against todays threats. It is now known that a real tight protection can be achieved with focus on seamless integration of the security module and kernel into the core functionality, as well as through a separated and protected hardware security kernel. Trusted Computing R&D The Trusted Computing R&D at Cyberspace Security Centre is about everything in a computing system that provides a secure environment. It refers to technologies and proposals for resolving computer security problems through hardware enhancements and associated software modifications. It ranges from securing areas such as operating system and its standard security mechanisms, computer hardware components, network resources and its prescribed procedures. The main objective is to achieve higher security with less dependence on vigilance on the part of the user and network administrators. The research challenge to our researchers is to design the computing environment where an end user having multiple computers at different levels of security on the desktop shall not leak information from one network to another network.

ENCRYPTION SYSTEMS CENTRE

Cryptology is the essence of Encryption Systems -- a complex subject not just mathematically but also practically. It is about securing moving data or at rest. A lot of problem arises when two cryptographic entities decides to communicate. Here at MIMOS Encryption Systems Centre we provide platforms securing communication devices. The emphasis is to provide not just cryptographic hardware accelerator but also key management at the protocol level all in one cryptographic unit. This will ensure the implementation of the cryptographic components offload to the cryptographic unit for processing to optimize the security related procedures. The Encryption Systems Centre research areas include: 1. Cryptanalysis 2. Advanced Encryption 3. Encryption Systems

GRID COMPUTING CENTRE

The MIMOS Grid Computing Centre is developing the prototype for a Grid Computing infrastructure which offers collaborative resource on bioinformatics, product design, manufacturing, multimedia, financial analysis, defense & public safety and natural disasters & climate studies. Our goal is to establish a state-of-the-art platform based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) framework. This will result in a national collaboratory of strategic computing reserve for sharing power & data storage, and also the sharing of applications and softwares which will serve the needs of large organisations, small and medium enterprises, as well as individuals.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CENTRE

Here, MIMOS Artificial Intelligence Centre is concerned with the development of engines and platforms for the construction of knowledge bases and knowledge management tools to be used by knowledge-based applications. With artificial intelligence, databases may soon be replaced with knowledge bases to allow for reasoning in querying its content, thus rendering applications more intelligent. Our applied research goal is to support applications that make knowledge management systems more effective in capturing, retaining and utilizing knowledge, and to make all such knowledge management processes more automated.

Microsystems & MEMS Centre

MEMS & Microsystems Centre is an inter-disciplinart center, which comprises six sub-groups that work together to create microsystems that will have a pervasive impact in the local economy nad bring benefits ti the soceity. By merging micro-sensor design, smart interface electronics, wireless connectivity, advance packaging and soil engineering, we hope to develope microsensors platform for environmental monitoring and as well as nutrient detection in precision agriculture farming. The centre is headed by Prof. Dr. Masuri Othman with sub-groups being:

Micro-fluidics & BioMEMS MicroOptoElectroMechanical System (MOEMS) & Physical Sensor on the microsensor design part. Analog Mixed Signal Circuit Design on design of micro-power circuits for sensor interfaces. RF Wireless on wireless interface Soil Engineering Sensors Packaging & Test for the final verification and characterization.

Micro Energy Systems

Hand-held electronic devices are increasing in sophistication with exponential increase in their power consumption. As consumers demand more features to be added to cameras, phones, and other devices, the power draw is becoming too great for traditional batteries. All of these functions require a very high amount of energy, which can no longer be provided by the current battery technologies. Thus, MIMOS applied research in micro energy systems is focused on producing very powerful miniaturised energy systems, which are needed to power the gadgets of the future.
