Residents in the East Wheatland area will be happy to hear that the Alberta Government has approved funding to build the new East Wheatland K-12 school. School officials are waiting to hear how much funding has been allocated before the next step in the process is taken. We are very excited with todays announcements. I cant say enough about the working roup and the excellent job they have done in moving this whole situation forward. Truly, this is a solution that not only is good for students, but is also a model for rural sustainability. For the province to recognize that work and support all the communities in East Wheatland with a consolidated solution and to fund a state of the art facility where all our East Wheatland staff and students are able to work and learn together is fantastic news for all of us, said Superintendent of Golden Hills School Division, Bevan Daverne. Once funding amounts are confirmed, the next step will be an approach to Wheatland County for the building site, which will be located on the corner of Hwy. 840 and Hwy. 561, approaching the turnoff for Standard. A county development process must be followed and if approval is given, then design drawings will be developed. Again at that point, we will be back out in the community for community input, said Daverne. Daverne speculated that the school will have a custom design to reflect the lots unique location characteristics. It will hold 450 students and leave room for expansion and growth. He said there will be a high school sized gym, computer and other program labs, shop, and appropriate rooms for K-12 programming. This project will be open to community and municipal groups, if they wish to participate in fundraising projects that enhance the school experience. He said Golden Hills School Division has had successful community partnerships in the past. He gave the example of the modernization of Trochu Valley School, which had a boost of $250,000, raised by community partnerships. Golden Hills School Division also received notification of provincial funding to upsize a Three Hills Elementary school to serve students K-12.

Sean Stordy, a chiropractor at Optimum Wellness Centre, is contemplating strategy for Walking a Mile in Her Shoes. He said, although wearing high heels is not something he recommends, he is willing to suffer a small bit to help bring awareness to the issues of rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Stordy and his staff at the Optimum Wellness Centre are also raising funds in an extra show of support for the cause. The names of cash supporters are posted on feet and heart symbols, and then are displayed in the centre. Donations will be accepted until May 22, which is the day of the walk in Gleichen. Stordy said the office has all the services needed, should participants feel a little out of balance, after their experience. Strathmore Shoppers Drug Mart held their PINK fundraiser event on May 4. Look Good Feel Better is a two-hour workshop that is brought to women facing cancer. It helps them feel more confident in themselves, while taking on the cancer fight. The Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society is challenging all men to show a little foolishness, by registering to step into a pair of high heels and strut their stuff, for one mile, at The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes march. The walk will take place in Gleichen on May 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. I am so excited that Kevin Reilly is our commander, and hes got over $700 in pledges so far, said Leslie Hering, program director for Strathmore Victim Services. Hering and her volunteers are feeling the excitement as the day approaches as it will see all of their hard work come to fruition. Currently there are 16 participants registered, and Hering is hoping to see that number rise to about 30. It is an all-male march, but female friends and partners can come out cheer them on. Volunteers are pretty sure that there are plenty of men out there, secure in their masculinity that they will participate for a good cause. All involved will share in a BBQ to follow and rumours have it that there will be free foot mas-
sages. The whole Walk a Mile in her shoes is to support Victim Services directly, in regards to raising proceeds for Victim Services in the area. It is to get the word out about things that are hard to talk to, like gender relations and sexual violence, whether its domestic violence or sexual assault, said Staff Sgt. Reilly. Every community experiences this problem. It is a global problem. People often dont report. It is a very underreported crime, so lets make people aware of it and help with this process, said Hering. The event is set in Gleichen because regional event rules stipulate a distance of at least 50 km, from another event. Gleichen is a great place to have it, why not there? said Hering. Frank Baird created the firs Walk a Mile event in 2001. It has grown from a small group of men tottering around a park to a world wide movement aimed at raising funds and spreading awareness about domestic violence and sexual abuse. Fire hall opens and volunteers recognized

Brad Everett Times Contributor Although its been in use since Dec. 31, the Standard Volunteer Fire department waited for warmer weather to officially open their new $832,000 fire hall on Saturday, May 5. The project has the distinction of having been finished on time and on budget something both County Councillor Alice Booth and Standard Mayor Alan Larsen noted in their comments. The building, located in the Villages industrial area, allows the firefighters to keep all their vehicles in one building, as well as providing a wash bay for the trucks, a meeting room, air room and washroom/shower facilities. The idea of a new fire hall began almost 10 years ago, but it wasnt until the last five years that fundraising and planning began in earnest. The County of Wheatland provided 60 per cent of the funding, with the remaining 40 per cent coming from various donors as well as assorted fundraising projects such as suppers and bottle drives. We appreciate the funding from the County and the larger sponsors, but we also want to recognize the contribution of community members who supported the various fundraising efforts, said Fire Chief Phil Faubion. One unique aspect of the hall is the large Canadian flag hanging inside. Former Standard Fire Chief and volunteer fireman, Andy Schulthess donated the flag. About 23 years ago I put my name in for a program where you could receive a flag that had flown over the Peace Tower in Ottawa, said Schulthess. I didnt think I had much of a chance but recently I received a package in the mail containing this flag which flew over the Peace Tower on April 5, 2012. I couldnt think of any better place for it than this new fire hall and Im thankful I could donate it, he said. The grand opening also provided an opportunity for both the Village of Standard as well as the Alberta Office of the Fire Commissioner to recognize those volunteers from the fire department and emergency first response team (EFRT) who have achieved milestones in service.

Tom Harnos, from the South Central Region of the Fire Commissioner, presented the Alberta Emergency Services Medal, which recognizes the dedication of time and talent of these volunteers in the service of others. Started in 2003, the award is given to those who have served 12 years or more. To date 5,400 volunteers in the province have been given this award. The EFRT members recognized by the Village were: Kathy Pedersen 5 years; Connie Schulthess 11 years; Gloria Laycock 11 years; Glenda Gauthier 13 years; Debbie Gates 13 years. Sharon McLeay Times Contributor With spit-shined boots and brushedoff brims, RCMP officers in red serge dress uniforms will show up for inspection to the Regimental Ball, held at the Gleichen Community Hall on May 25, 2013. A Regimental Ball is a formal affair. RCMP members are in red serge and guests are dressed in semi-formal and formal attire. The Ball is an opportunity to meet RCMP members in your community. It is a time to appreciate the men and women who have chosen a profession that has great rewards but also tremendous personal demands; a profession that can lead to the loss of their own lives in service to us. It is also an opportunity to support the volunteer Victim Services Advocates who provide 24/7 crisis support to victims of crime and tragedy, said Leslie Hering, program coordinator for the Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society. Working hand in hand with the RCMP, Victim Services volunteers provide immediate help for victims of crime; helping them as they maneuver their way through the justice system, giving aid as they establish their resource needs and move toward a more stabilized life. The funds raised from this event go to support that effort. The event is open to everyone. Those with past military or police experience are encouraged to break out their dress uniforms, shine up the medals and share in an evening of protocol. Events hosted by the Gleichen Community Ladies are known for their good food and crowd pleasing surprises. Live music will be provided by Larry Vannatta and his band; dancing will follow dinner and the live auction. Swirl the night away under the softened lights, among a sea of uniformed men and elegant ladies. Make the night one to remember. There are only 160 tickets, so they will sell out quickly. Citizen of the Month

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor The Citizen of the Month for May is not one but many. Councillor Bob Sobol awarded the honour to the Strathmore Musical Arts Society. In 2011, this council began acknowledging people in the community for going above and beyond, in how they support Strathmore and making it a better place to live. My nominee, for Citizen of the Month for May, easily falls into this category. In 1996, the Musical Arts group became a Society, funded by a $3,500 Town Council grant and became dedicated to encouraging culture in Strathmore, said Sobal. He went on to outline the focus and goals of the group; the society brings top quality music three to four times a year to Strathmore, delivered through a dinner theatre atmosphere. Some of the entertainers are Juno and Emmy award winners, with music genres varying from Country, Folk, Rock, Pop and Blues. They always showcase local talent in the opening act, which allows these groups an opportunity to put their performance foot right in the front door of the entertainment industry. Musical Arts Society members are all volunteers and have an open invitation for others to join in the fun. It is obvious that the society possesses a passion, they love music. They feel that these performances benefit Strathmore and District and feel the artists in a significant way. Someone once said that life without music is like a journey through the desert. I certainly agree and hope that this group continues to bring quality music to Strathmore for many years to come, said Sobal. Mill rate stays steady

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Residents will be happy to hear that property taxes will only rise by one to two per cent in 2013. Every year, municipal councils, during their budgetary process, approve the amount of revenue required to operate the municipality. From this amount, they subtract the known revenues, such as grants, licences, permits and so on. The remainder represents the amount of money to be raised by property taxes. For Strathmore the 2013 total estimated municipal revenues and transfers is $26,220,200. The municipal department revenues and school requisitions, and other transfers for 2013 are estimated at $16,571,555, leaving a balance of $9,648,665, which will be raised by taxes. The Province of Alberta shows that the total of all property assessments for the Town of Strathmore are valued at $1,632,754,646. To get the tax mill rate: the amount of money needed to be raised by taxes is divided by the total value off all the property in the municipality and multiplied by 1,000. For the breakdown of the various mill rates see the Town of Strathmore website under Bylaw 13-07. Council unanimously passed the 2013 mill rate bylaw, through all three and final readings. Corporate Services Manager Mel Tiede did a sampling of 21 residences in Strathmore, comparing property values from last year to this year. It showed an average 1.1 per cent decline in property values and a tax increase of 1.1 per cent. Councillors asked if a comparison could be done on other municipalities, to see how Strathmore properties compare. They said that residents are under the impression that they pay more taxes than other communities for their services. The results will be brought back to council for review. LITTLE LOTS Phase One of the West Creek development will convert 15.6 acres into 34 x 36-foot-wide lots, smaller than normal sized, for single detached or semidetached housing. The area is situated just north of Westmount, south of the Strathmore Golf Course on the West of Wheatland Trail. The goal is to provide more affordable housing options for the citizens of Strathmore, said MaryAnn Wade, senior development aid with West Creek Developments. Wade indicated the West Creek development will help give a diversity of housing choices to potential buyers. The move will put the house density up to 6.3 units per acre, giving 974 houses. The area structure plan guidelines list the development must have no more than 6.5 units per acre and 1002 houses. All council members passed second, third and final reading of the Bylaw 1308. Hwy 1 reporting Councillor Bob Sobol asked council to consider including a regular report of RCMP Hwy. 1 monitoring activity in their Annual Performance Plan, which was passed on March 21, 2012. The report lists Town priorities that they would like the RCMP to address. Priorities were listed as Service to the Public (with positive interactions between staff, police, and public), traffic enforcement and education, mischiefspecifically vandalism and property damage reduction, reduction in theft and drug enforcement, project development, and education. Council approved approaching Strathmore Staff Sgt. Kevin Rielly about the addition. 10 or 20 years Fortis, the Town of Strathmores energy provider, is looking for a renewal of their electrical system franchise agreement with the town. While the contract has no new energy rate changes, it is looking for a twenty-year commitment. I am concerned about a twenty-year term, said Councillor Bob Sobol. He said the contract had no early cancellation clause. CAO Dwight Stanford said that currently there is no other company available to choose from, but that a lot could change in five years. Council asked staff to take the contract back to legal, and check if an early cancellation clause could be developed. The contract comes back to Council on May 15. Another three years Six firms were encouraged to apply for the position of Town Auditor. Staff recommended Young Parkyn McNab, currently finishing a three-year term for the Town, as they came in at the lowest proposal of $18,250 per year plus a CPI factor of 5 per cent. Other professional services such as reports, audits, grant documents, or LAPP audits are not included in the agreement and will be engaged as needed. Council authorized the Mayor and the Chief Administration Officer to sign the letter of agreement to retain them as auditors for the Town.

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Wheatland fire chiefs are asking council to appoint a new, independent fire chair for the County fire departments. They see the role of the new chair as: providing information on training matters, advising on capital funding issues, being the main contact to the County on the fire departments behalf, and providing help with applications, permits, and regulations. The chair would also liaison with the Fire Commissioners office, advocate, and promote the various departments needs. The minutes provided to Chief Administrative Officer Alan Parkin indicate that the fire chiefs currently feel fire departments are inadequately represented. Members have concerns that an employee of the County, by definition, creates bias. They feel the level of advocacy and the promotion of the local fire departments concerns are significantly below their expectations. A motion was made for the current chair, County appointed and employed, to step down and not attend meetings. Council appointed the County Protective Services/Fire/Disaster and Safety (PSFDS) Manager to the role. They considered that he holds credentials greater than those held by members in the volunteer fire ranks and has extensive firefighting experience. The County designated liaison duties, as part of the managers job description. They expected anyone in the position would liaison with the fire departments and work with them to provide information to various regulatory and legislative departments. Council members were visibly shaken by the request and indicated that they had major concerns with the request. They indicated they felt the current PSFDS Manager had fulfilled his job mandate and as an employer, council needed to show support. Councillor Brenda Knight said that it seemed to indicate that the fire departments wanted to create their own regionalized service, with the County footing the costs. Councillor Ben Armstrong indicated the Countys right to have representation at the meeting and that the PSFDS Manager was appointed as the liaison to the County contractors. Parkin suggested that there may be a conflict of personalities involved in the request. I can recognize a problem when I see one. We have work to be done, said Councillor Ken Sauve, who suggested it may have to do with miscommunication and worries about the ongoing Fire Services Review. This puts us in a very difficult position as our agreements are with the Fire Associations, said Reeve Glenn Koester. Council decided to send a letter from the CAO and Wheatland Council, requesting all the Fire Associations meet and discuss the motion made at the fire chiefs meeting. Cluny fire observation tour incomplete Wheatland County Manager of Protective Services/Fire/Disaster and Safety (PSFDS) asked Wheatland County council for direction and support regarding the incomplete Observation Tour of the Cluny Fire Department. He said that the deadline for completing the tour and submitting the documentation was up November 2012. He had delayed the tour several times, in order for the department to prepare for the tour. The Tour is required under Certificates of Recognition (COR), to ensure that the County can provide WCB coverage for volunteer firefighters. www. amhsa.net. Skibinsky was asked by Council to assist departments in meeting requirements and providing documentation for the certification. The regulations stipulate that municipalities must include fire departments in their health and safety management system, if they have the same WCB account number as their employing municipality. If they have a different WCB account, they are excluded from interviews, documentation review, and observational tours. It is an issue of safety for our volunteer firefighters and it is a legal requirement, said Wheatland CAO Alan Parkin. We are responsible to our ratepayers. If something happens, it is our liability that is one the line, said Councillor Ben Armstrong. Council directed the Reeve to send a letter to the Cluny fire department, stating their requirement to have the tour completed by the end of May. General business Wheatland County Manager of Protective Services/Fire/Disaster and Safety (PSFDS) updated Wheatland Council on recent PSFDS activities completed on behalf of Council, County staff, ratepayers and the Fire Services. They included: completion of staff first aid certifications, acquiring a $16,000 training grant for fire services, continued development of an Emergency Response Plan, scheduled to be completed by fall 2013 and liaison with Vulcan County regarding assistance during emergency disaster situations. He also indicated that Gleichen Fire Chief Richard Clarke had stepped down and Mike Burne was appointed, pending documentation completion.

EMS transition kick-off

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor On April 29, at the Strathmore Civic Centre, six representatives stood face to face with stakeholders, hoping to score a touchdown for the EMS dispatch transition process. They were associated with Alberta Health Services (AHS) in various capacities and several were veteran street paramedics. The team wants to include stakeholders in the game plan, to address concerns about the move to a centralized dispatch. Jim Garland, executive director of communications and deployment for EMS Dispatch, said that AHS had learned many things from early transition experiences, and changes were made to increase communication and develop methods to address unique characteristics of service areas. What you are participating in tonight is the first piece of that transition process. It is what we call the kick-off meeting for the project, said Garland. Then we go on to develop a Project Charter. In that charter, we determine what it is we need to do to capture your interests and make sure we capture our interests. Things like...if interagency inter-operability is important to the community and other public safety agencies in the community, we need to address that. That forms part of the tasks for the charter. He clarified that the South Communication Centre (SCC) would not take the initial 911 calls, or dispatch fire crews, but notifications and interactive protocols would be identified within the charter, as to how those services interact with Wheatland ambulances. Provisions for staff schedulingaccording to contract provisionscan also be built into the business rules of the charter. Garland said that response to aboriginal communities can be incorporated into the plan as well. It was stressed that stakeholder input was critical for this part of the process. My role is to make sure this is friendly, safe, successful and seamless; it is to help put the groups together and make sure we capture the needs and goals. It is not about poor quality in the dispatch system. We have no major concerns about the system, said SSC Manager Stephanie Nicoll. She will work with Rob Witty, WADEMSAs Operations Director, to develop details of Wheatlands Charter. She emphasized that there was experience and expertise on both sides that would contribute to the process. Accurate area mapping was discussed. Rural addressing across the province is not standardized or legislated, so there are a number of formats and regimes, said Garland. Municipal mapping information is accessed, reformatted and integrated into dispatch system maps. Cross references are built in to address descriptions, like colloquial place names. The system is continually updating data, and municipalities submit new data for integration as it becomes available. Communication and geographic anomalies would be tested, to ensure coverage was in place. We have built in a number of redundancies for the technology in case of failures, Garland said. Currently, commercial cellular networks, Iintegrated digital enhanced network, and enhanced data voice optimization networks are used. The system has proven success even in remote areas in Northern Alberta, where traditional coverage was not available. He said if ambulance tech failed, dispatchers verbally direct cars. In no service areas, alternate radio signals can be used, such as Global Satellite services, or ONSTAR. The technology used by the SCC is one of the most sophisticated in North America. Garland also said that Wheatland staff will have an increased pool of medical expertise to draw on by becoming part of the provincial system. What that allows us to do, is take best practices and state of the art technology and get that out to communities that never had it before. For a small community it is expensive, said Garland. Once operational, SSC would receive call notification from 911 services. Dispatch paramedics answer the call, ascertain the patient location, gather scene details, monitor patient safety, and initiate call response to the designated ambulance. They stay on the line with the patient and the responding crew to coordinate information. All ambulance locations are tracked, by computerized System Status Management software. It identifies the first available, most appropriate, closest ambulance to the call, governed by dataassisted call projections. If WADEMSA submits a year of call input data, the system could help with area call volume and response projections. In the future, being part of the provincial system may provide back-up ambulances when Wheatland ambulances are delayed. Fifteen or 20 times a month, we call Code RED and have no ambulances available. I have had to call Calgary and arrange an ambulance to standby. One of the benefits I see in this is that I wont have to babysit the dispatch 24 hours a day waiting for RED calls, the system will handle that for us, said Kevin Link, WADEMSA paramedic. Assurances were given that every attempt is made to keep ambulances in their area and return them to home base as soon as possible. We rely on crews to communicate with us to improve, said Garland. All of the variables contribute to us trying to make good patient care decisions and provide full patient experiences. We are all in this for the same reason. Members in the audience wanted more information on accountability processes. It was voiced that concerns may be lost between WADEMSA and the large organizational structure. Garland replied that communication channels exist and data is available, to monitor quality and accountability. Garland said it was the first time budget costs and financial information was requested. As for WADEMSA staff overtime required to implement the transition and train on equipment, there was no information on who would pay. Is it going to be efficient? I will prove it is efficient, said Garland, who challenged those present to hold him to the promise. Garland indicated that stakeholders can leave their contact information with WADEMSA, and they will be put on a transition communication fan-out that delivers updates as the process develops. WADEMSAs transition will be pushed quickly, simultaneous with 13 other Alberta regions. A projected finish date is December 2013.

Boneless Chicken Breast with Stuffed Ricotta and Spinach
Ingredients:
6 M&M Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts, thawed 6 heaping tbsp Ricotta cheese 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese divided in 2 (1/4 cup for stuffing; 1/4 cup for topping) 4 packed cups of baby spinach pinch of nutmeg 1 tbsp olive oil 1/4 cup chopped nuts (toasted pine nuts, almonds, pistachios or walnuts) 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
Directions:
1. Wilt spinach in the olive oil and chop coarsely. Mix with the ricotta and Parmesan and add nuts, freshly ground pepper and nutmeg. 2. Cut a pocket in the thickest part of the chicken breast and stuff with the cheese mixture. Cook for 15 minutes in a nonstick pan with a lid in an inch of water or chicken stock. 3. Uncover and spread the remaining mixture of Parmesan and breadcrumbs and put under the oven broiler for 2-3 minutes. 4. Replacing the playground

To the Editor It was with great disappointment that I heard today from Chrissy Craig of the LCA that Rocky View County refuses to pay for the replacement of childrens playground equipment which they, the county, tore down and destroyed. In the immediate aftermath of the removal of some of the playground equipment, the county stated that it would be replacing that equipment prior to the onset of the most recent winter season. This replacement of equipment by the county was reiterated by the local councilor (Mr. Rolly Ashdown). There is an amount of $58,000 levied against the citizens of Langdon on a yearly basis for, and I quote a Special Tax for Recreational Services. To my knowledge, very little of this money is spent for recreational purposes but more often spent on park maintenancethis is in stark contravention of the Municipal Government Act, which stipulates that the money must be spent on specific recreational services. It appears that the countywhilst happy to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to facilities in the townships of Airdrie, Chestermere, and Cochranehas deemed it necessary that the Hamlet of Langdon must pay for its own park maintenance and playground equipment. Our councilor has proven derelict in his duties to the citizens of Langdon and must be held to account. Thank you, Phillip Grimison Langdon
Rollover accident on Hwy. 1

On May 4 at approximately 2:30 p.m. an accident occurred in the westbound lanes of Hwy. 1 about one kilometre east of Strathmore. One vehicle was found in the ditch rolled onto its roof, and the driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital. A second vehicle is believed to have been involved and was found at George Freeman Trail with heavy frontend damage. One person was taken into custody, and the crash is still under investigation.
Credit where credit is due

To the Editor On behalf of Hockey Alberta, I would like to thank the Organizing Committee, Strathmore Minor Hockey, and the Town of Strathmore for doing an amazing job of hosting the ATB Financial Alberta Cup. Everyone we encountered; facilities staff, servers in the restaurants and hotels, retailers, caterers, police, firefighters, local politicians, and community members, were always polite, helpful, and genuinely interested in our players and their experience. We particularly appreciate the outstanding work of the Host Committee (Wayne Hansen, Blair and Melody Wilson, Jody Schneider, Mark Bishop, Brad Hammond, Edwina Muller, Bonnie Reinbold, Nolan Frese, Dustin Larsen, Jodi Christensen, and Tracy Simpson). Their great effort, combined with the enthusiasm of nearly 150 local volunteers, led to a wildly successful event where the players, coaches, and trainers were provided with an excellent opportunity to learn and grow in the game of hockey. Of Mice and Menand da Rabbits!

Pat Fule Fule for Thought One of my favourite novels to teach is Of Mice and Men. That book deals with the loneliness of two guys travelling and working together in Depression Era California. The big guy has the mind of a child, and only wants to tend da rabbits. Now that I look back on my childhood, I have come to the realization that I too, was poor. Not really dirt poor, but 1960s mining town kind of poor. In 1964 we moved from a mine company house to a small 1000 square foot. Nelson package my dad built. If you can remember being a kid in the 60s, then youll maybe remember the excitement of Friday after schools when you got set fire to the weeks garbage in the old burning barrel. Safe emissionsburning plasticpaperscardboard we were gloriously oblivious to any of these environmental concerns! In fact, as far as burning things go, my earliest memory is being in the backyard of my crazy Hungarian uncle (moonshiner), as we were sent in to the house suddenly, because his familys pig had to be shot and butchered! My job (at four) was to take one of the butane blowtorches and burn all the hair off dead Porky. I had never smelled burning hair and fleshit was not a good combination, so I know I bailed very quickly! When we did move to Townside (other side of the river from MinesideI know, pretty simple, eh?) we had a new and bigger houseand PIGEONS! Now my dad was not a pet guy when I was a kid. Animals had to have a purpose, and I vaguely recall having pigeons in the upper part of our detached garage. Why we had pigeons, I never really considered, until I looked at old photos lately. I have come to the belief that the pigeons may have been a food source! Now both my parents are deceased, so I cant do any checking, but Im afraid the chicken we had a lotmay have been a whole different kind of bird! We also kept rabbits, and my job was to feed them in their pens. This was always a wee bit terrifying for me, because these rabbits were not all friendly. In fact, we had what I think was a snowshoe hare. This rabbit was a light brown in the summer, and then he whitened by winter. In the dark of early winter evenings, I dreaded going to feed him. With all the white snow around, the dark cage, his red eyes glaringI hated feeding him. He would lie and waitdeep in the dark corner of his pen, and he would thump his back foot. All I could ever see were those creepy, red eyes! My normal strategy was: open the door a crack, whip in a big chunk of lettuce and carrots slam the door as he scurried toward me, and then lock him in. I, like Lennie in Of Mice and Men, got to tend da rabbits and it scared the crap out of me! Now, remember what I said about my dad and his idea of pets. Ive always wondered about those rabbits, and my biggest worry, is that they too, were not necessarily pets, but possibly dinner items! You dont think the pig, the pigeons, and the rabbits could all be linked by a common thing, do you? Its no wonder that Im one of the worlds worst pet ownersI mean Deb and I lost so many fish from our aquarium, that at pet shops, if fish saw the Fules coming, theyd also hide in the corners, not wanting to be bought! As part of a simpler time, my dad always took me with him when hed visit his mine pals. Thats when I saw what I still think is the worlds worst drink concoction. My dads mine partner was an old guy named Archie, and we went to visit him one Saturday. I guess Archie had a cold (or thats what they told kids when they drank!) so he got out some rye whisky. He poured himself what I thought was a lot of alcohol. Then he took a big scoop of Vicks Vapor Rub with his hand and splatted it into the glass, too! Ive never seen anyone since then do that, and the image and smell of the rye and vapour rub mixed and drank is still something I distinctly remember. It may also be why Archie didnt live as long as he wanted! Growing up in Canmore in the 60s and 70s was (like other Alberta towns) much simpler than today. You found basic ways to entertain you and things like pets often had to have a purpose. I never did find out about the pigeons, rabbits, or pig, but I have a sinking feeling these animals werent just petsthey were on the Fules menu!

Music pairs with laughter

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Rosebud anniversary celebrations are in full swing and the May 16-18 weekend is packed with entertainment. On May 16, at 4:30 p.m., members of churches within the tri corners of Three Hills, Drumheller and Strathmore will share in a free Unity in Christ worship service at the Rosebud Church, led by Rosebud Covenant Church Pastor Ray Wall and Adam Furfaro, Executive Director of Rosebud Centre of the Arts. Brian Doerksen, his band and Morris Ertman will lead a panel discussion entitled Storytelling through Worship. The afternoon session on Thursday is free and open to anyone and everyone, offers Furfaro. Our prayer is that pastors, church leaders, worship team members and congregants from the area churches of all denominations will retreat to this valley to spend a time of prayer and fellowship together. Doerksen will follow that up with a dinner show, at the Opera House Stage, 8p.m. The concert will highlight some of Doerksens songs, supplemented with songs based on The Psalms. Concert-goers will be delighted by the percussive zaniness of Calum Rees, and be moved by the mournful melodies of Brian Thiessens electric guitar and the ethereal vocals of Teresa Trask. Seniors living options in Strathmore
Alberta Health Services and AgeCare are expanding the number of continuing care beds in your community.
In fall 2013, the Sagewood Seniors Community continuing care facility in Strathmore (above) will open 70 new supportive living spaces. This expansion also includes the addition of 35 long-term care spaces for seniors who have highly complex health needs whose care cannot be provided in their own home, or in supportive living. Sagewood originally opened in 2011 with 60 AHS-funded supportive living spaces, a level of care that had not been previously available in the community. Supportive living offers health and personal care supports in private suites with the added reassurance of having professional nursing care and support staff available on-site 24 hours a day. Seniors consistently tell us they want the most home-like, independent care possible and this option meets those needs. The addition of these long-term care spaces at Sagewood will allow us to relocate the 23 long-term care spaces at the Strathmore District Health Services facility to Sagewood, providing the community with an overall increase of 82 additional care spaces.
This is good news for our long-term care residents as it will allow them to live in a more home-like environment while receiving care best suited to their needs. Sagewood will provide residents private rooms and bathrooms. It will also have a dementia unit specializing in caring for individuals with dementia, and beautifully landscaped grounds that are accessible and inviting for everyone to enjoy the outdoors. Its important that seniors age as close to home as possible, while receiving the most appropriate care, and the addition of these supportive living and long-term care spaces will provide seniors in your community the right care in the right place.

Musical fun for everyone at Festival of Music

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The 17 Annual Festival of Music will take place on May 16 at the Alliance Church beginning at 7 p.m. The experience lets the community exhibit their artistic side to the town, and is open to all, especially anyone studying music. All types of musical styles and genres are showcased with instruments, or vocals, or both but no recording music can be used. Its all live talent. Kathie Zakresky runs the event, but also enjoys participating. Her objective is to provide a fun, non-competitive, and comfortable atmosphere where no one should feel intimidated or bashful; from beginners to concert level musicians, people who have been involved previously register again and again. The biggest reward is feeling pleased with your musical performance, and sharing that joy with others, Zakresky said. Ages of those involved have ranged from kindergarteners to 100-years-old - as long as their piece is polished, theyre more than welcome. There is no specific cost for admission, however, everyone who attends is encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Wheatland Food Bank. Monetary donations are also allowed, which, after expenses, are given to the Hope Bridges Society. Though they have had as many as 56 performers in the past, 25 entries is the goal this year (so reserve your spot). Busy times for Crowfoot 4-H

Kaitlyn Stewart Crowfoot 4-H Multi Report Crowfoot 4-H Multi had their last general meeting on May 6. The club will be having their Achievement Day on Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Strathmore Ag Grounds. Set up will be on Friday, May 10 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Sewing project completed their year and everyone made beautiful pyjamas and finished their quilts or bed runners. We will be showcasing our sewing projects at 4-H on Parade from May 31 to June 2 at the Calgary Stampede Grounds. The Archery project will be having their last get together on May 16. A new foam deer has been added to their targets. Thank you Mike Comstock for picking this up for us. The Dog Agility will be having their last meeting on May 27. Most of the members will be going to the Millarville 4-H Fun Day on May 25. The dogs and the 4-H members can also be seen at 4-H on Parade. The Foods project went on an amazing adventure to India. Thanks to Lorraine Bauer who traveled there with her family. She shared her experiences, the culture and the cuisine with the kids. The group made vegetable samosas, basmati rice, butter chicken, naan bread, vegetable pakoras and mango lassis for dessert. It was an amazing feast; a big thank you to Lorraine for a wonderful afternoon. The Lego project is winding up their year and finishing their Achievement Day display. To all the leaders for their time and knowledge, thank you. Without you our 4-H club wouldnt be so amazing. Shoot for the Troops

The Strathmore Legion held their sixth annual Shoot for the Troops darts tournament on May 4. 22 teams from across Alberta, eight from Strathmore and others from as far away as High Prairie, participated in the all-day event. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated directly to the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre, a non-profit organization that provides support for members of the Canadian Armed Forces. Last year, through this tournament, the Strathmore Legion raised $2641 for the Resource Centre and they hope to better that this year.

This song was co-written by Commander Hadfield and Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies who joined in later in the program. What is the cost of a flush?

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Town Councillors are caught up in how to charge for sewer services while still giving conservation-minded residents equitable water savings. The Town sewer system is operating at an approximate $370,000 deficit and must have funds generated to pay for services. Sixty-five per cent of the sewer costs are fixed and do not vary with water volume. Residents complain that they are being overcharged for water used on lawns, that isnt processed by the sewer treatment facility. Some residents feel the discontinuation of the old irrigation system and the removal of the second household metre last year - that monitored outdoor water use - has complicated the process. Other residents that conserve water and purchased lowflush toilets, front-loading washers, and collect rain water (as advocated by the town), say they are not compensated for their efforts. Single person households are being penalized, as they pay the same flush rate as multi-person households. Commercial facilities who dont irrigate, or snowbirds that dont use a lot of water in the winter, are not compensated. Staff developed five options for Council to consider: Charge residents $274 plus installation costs, to install second metres to measure water used for outside irrigation, excluding this metered water from the sanitary charges. However, it was noted that if 50 per cent of residents bought the second metre, the town would have to increase fees for everyone again to cover the lost revenue. Have residents prove they conserve water for an average sewer credit for the summer months, based on installed water conservation appliances, xeriscaping costs, and rain barrel purchase receipts. This may turn into a logistical problem if only partial measures are used. Charge a flat fee for sewer service, but this doesnt encourage conservation or give equity for low/high usage. Sewer averaging for residential customers should be implemented, however, low water use in summer might skew the winter rates. Keep billing as it is, which doesnt recover deficit costs or charges for water not actually treated. Mayor Steve Grajczyk suggested that the sewer be taken off the utility bill, divided by actual operation costs, and applied to property taxes, based on assessment values. However, it was noted that it gave no incentive to conserve water. You would be moving sewer to the Towns obligation and moving it to property taxes, said Corporate Services Manager, Mel Tiede. Councillor Rocky Blockland said that Council already made a decision on removing a second meter, with subsequent billing changes last year. He felt the decision should be upheld and billing should be kept as it is. Councillor John Rempel said that the Town is already subsidizing the rate for everyone, because according to the deficit, true rates are not on the bills. I dont like the idea of water and sewer tied together. They should be separate, said Rempel. I disagree completely; you are penalizing low users of water when you do that. Those people who use very little water and have no backyard are going to suffer for this. The only way to do sewage is to have it linked to heavy water usage. There is an assumption that heavy water usage is going to the sewer. I know thats not the case, but its the only way to be fair with this, said Councillor Bob Sobal. Councillor Pat Fule asked if a cost comparison breakdown could be made for each of the options, so that a better decision could be made, and wondered if there were examples from other municipalities. The only decision that Councillors could agree on was the decision to extend the requirement that meters dont need replacing every ten years, but could be done on a fifteen year basis, as recommended by staff. Staff will develop more cost comparison information and sewer billing will come back to council for more discussion and a decision.

Sacred Heart Academy was proud to present their rendition of Snow White on April 30 and May 1. Cast and crew have been working hard since before Christmas, to pull together what is one of the most looked forward to events for grade six. The play went on without a hitch and entertained the crowd with lots of fun choreography.
Food for Fines wraps up

For the third year in a row, in the month of April, the Strathmore Municipal Library implemented a Food for Fines policy. Late fees were waived in lou of food donations to the Wheatland Food Bank. The staff at the library said that everyone was overly generous, and they surpassed their goal by collecting 1212 food items this year. Special thanks goes to the Strathmore Skate Club, who donated 105 items and to Strathmore FCSS who brought in over 100 items. Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Larry Marshall, community relations manager for Encana, gave a review of the companys activity to the Town of Strathmore Council on May 5. Our top priority is capital discipline and lowering costs, very similar to what our priority was for 2012, said Marshall. He told council that Encana is forming joint venture partnerships, with overseas companies like Toyota Tusho. Capital from these types of partnerships helps them move ahead with new reserve developments in northern and eastern Alberta, as well as the Maritimes and the United States. He outlined the company was moving to diversify its drilling activity, to a more oil and liquid gas collection. Encanas quarterly report for 2013 showed they drilled 26 wells in the Clearwater region - which is situated in Wheatland County - and their total company explorations netted approximately $2.9 billion in cash and cashequivalent profits this quarter. Marshall said there were no current plans for development surrounding Strathmore, but Wheatland County will see more small oil derrick donkeys and tank platform setups, due to the move to oil and liquid gas extraction. He indicated the ability to reach multiple resource pockets through horizontal drilling methods from single platforms, minimizes the amount of derricks and tanks needed, improving the visual landscape, and reducing obstructions for farmers. He mentioned the opening of the natural gas Cavalier plant, located 16 km southeast of Strathmore, which generates enough electricity to supply 100,000 homes, and their movement to develop consumer natural gas products for industrial vehicles. In March 2013, Encana received the Presidents Award from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) at the Responsible Canadian Energy Awards ceremony. It is the associations top honour, in recognition of the companys commitment to exceptional environmental, health and safety, and social performance. Marshall indicated last year Encana had its best safety performance to date and its Responsible Products Program - a company-wide program to manage chemical additives used in hydraulic fracturing - has been used by other companies as a template for responsible chemical use. Water management is a big piece of business and important to all of us. There has been a lot of continuous improvement and ongoing response from the industry in terms of public demands for transparency and water protection, said Marshall. Marshall ended off with the companys commitment to support the community with a list of agencies that have benefited from grants. The company is gearing up for their third year of the Race Against Hunger Food Collection. People bring food or cash donations to their gas powered Truckwagon at Alberta rodeos and theyll match the donation dollar for dollar, or $2 per pound of food. Last year $103,346.49 and 11,586 pounds of food were raised. They will be present at the 2013 Strathmore Heritage Days.

to start a new life. They host a ball to introduce the prince to the young marriageable women in the area, said drama teacher Paula Richardson. In the story, the seven deadly sins are personified as monsters. They are present and seen by the audience, but not seen by the characters; they are sort of lurking in the background. Richardson said the main character lives in the ashes because they are a safe place to hide. It is a place that she can get away from her fears. She sees the tale as a story of female empowerment, not giving up, facing your fears. It is about hope and how the smallest amount of hope can move the human spirit. The set is surrealistic and minimalist. It presents technical challenges for the lighting crews as lots of light changes are needed. Students worked both on the sets and costumes with the help of an adult volunteer. Two of the actors tackle the complicated process of playing dual roles and switching as lead actor. As weve gotten into the rehearsal process and theyve worked on developing the characters, they have really bought into it, compared to how they came into it at the beginning, said Richardson, describing how her students have developed their interpretation of the play. Ash Girl is presented at the SHS theatre May 13-16, at 7 p.m. nightly. Tickets are $10 at the door or call the school at (403) 934-3135.

How to prep your yard for summer parties

Backyard soirees are a staple of summer for many families. Whether hosting a family reunion, a gathering of friends or a mix of both, such gatherings can be a great time to reconnect with your loved ones in a relaxing and natural setting. Hosting such gatherings might not require as much work as organizing a more formal get-together, but that doesnt mean summer soirees dont require a little work in advance of the guests arrival. Thats especially true if you plan to host the party outdoors in your yard, which will need a little TLC before guests arrive. The following are a few tips to get your yard ready before your next summer soiree. * Cut the grass and clear your walkways. Cutting the grass before guests arrive might seem like common sense, but try to do so a couple of days before the party. This gives you an extra day or so to clear the walkways of grass clippings, and it saves you the trouble of cutting the grass on the day of the party when youre likely to have more pressing tasks to take care of. * Decorate your yard. Decorations are a staple of parties held indoors, so why not decorate your homes exterior when hosting a get-together in the backyard? Use freshly cut flowers from your own garden as centerpieces on your patio furniture, or purchase flowers of various colors from your local florist to add a dash or two of color to the festivities. * Clear the yard of toys. Before guests arrive, clear the yard of the kids toys, putting them away so guests dont injure themselves by stepping on errant action figures or skateboards left hidden in the grass. * Trim trees and shrubs around walkways. While a backyard barbecue is less formal than a party held indoors, you still want your home to be as accommodating as possible for your guests. Dont forget to trim trees and shrubs around the walkways so guests dont feel like theyre on safari when coming to and from the backyard. * Make sure outdoor lighting is working properly. If youre about to host your first event of the summer, inspect your homes exterior lighting so everyone isnt left sitting in the dark. Check patio lighting and replace any bulbs and make sure the lights along your walkways are functioning at full capacity so guests can safely navigate their way around the party. You may even want to string holiday lights around the patio to create a more laid-back ambiance in which guests can relax without lights beating down on them. * Protect your guests from insects. Insects like mosquitoes can quickly turn a swinging soiree into a nuisance, so purchase some decorative citronella candles to repel mosquitoes. Tiki torches along walkways and around the patio furniture may also prove effective insect repellants. Garden detective: Clues to determine and deter unwanted animals in your yard and garden
Joan Casanova Green Earth Media Group Holmes and Watson, Riggs and Murtaugh, starsky and Hutch - when it comes to sleuthing out just what critter is munching on your spring garden, you may feel like your partnership with Mother nature is as contentious as any that ever graced the big, or small screen. after all, how are you supposed to fight the crime of a decimated garden if you cant identify the suspect whos been devouring your daylilies? and while Mother nature may happily grace your garden with rain, warmth and sunshine, she may not always be on the same team when it comes to keeping critters out of your gardens and landscapes. Foraging pests can destroy your yard, literally overnight. It is possible to thwart garden thieves, but first you have to know what animals have been dining on your plants and shrubs. once youve identified the culprits, you can settle on effective animal repellents that will persuade pests to leave your garden alone. Here are some facts to get your detective work under way: Devouring deer - Ragged bites, typically a foot or more above the ground indicate deer damage. Deer are notorious for devouring gardens and landscapes. Youll see them, and their offspring, every year, making dinner of your daisies, daylilies and other ornamental plants. Ravenous rabbits - If plant damage is low to the ground - a few inches above the soil - and includes stems clipped cleanly at an angle, youre probably dealing with rabbits. These four-legged foragers will eat just about any kind of vegetation, including your fabulous flowers, bushes and other woody plants. If you dont want bunnies nesting and raising families near your garden, remove brush and other debris that could provide them with shelter. Voracious voles - When flower bulbs disappear from the ground or plant roots go missing, chances are you have voles - mouse-like creatures that burrow underground and that are highly destructive to gardens. Exit holes are further indications that voles are tunneling under your garden. Teeth marks around the base of trees, droppings or trails in the grass can also indicate the presence of voles. Greedy groundhogs Mounds of dirt beside burrow entrances are a sure sign of groundhogs, a garden pest that eats just about every type of green plant. Groundhogs can destroy a garden. These solitary herbivores live in burrows underground. Salacious squirrels - While you might think of them as mostly the enemy of anyone with a bird feeder, squirrels can also cause damage to gardens. They live in colonies, digging underground tunnels and mounds in grassy areas and around trees that can lay waste to gardens and landscapes. Once youve identified the culprits assaulting your garden, youll need the right tools to take care of them. Most traditional pest-control measures - row covers, netting, noise deterrents, predator urine or even human hair strewn around the yard - simply dont work. Fences can do the job, but theyre expensive and you may live in a community that restricts the type and height of fences you can erect. some small animal repellents, however, do work. Bobbex-R is all-natural, environmentally friendly and proven effective at protecting ornamental plantings from small, four-legged garden critters. In testing by the Connecticut agricultural Experiment station, the product - which works through smell and taste aversion - received a 100 percent efficacy rating at repelling rabbits. Cosmo competition returns to Strathmore High

John Coope, the oldest Lions member, who turns 86 on May 18, holds baby Dutka, the youngest Lions member. The first baby ever born to a Strathmore Lions member made his grand entrance on April 5 at 2:13 a.m. William Albert Dutka weighed 8 lbs 15 oz and was 19.25 inches long at birth. Proud parents Megan and Dave Dutka introduced their newest addition to the Lions Club on May 2, where he was welcomed with much enthusiasm and presented with a gift. The Dutkas decided to lay down roots in Strathmore and shortly after became Lions members.
Cosmetology students at Strathmore High School (SHS) and surrounding schools competed to show who had the best Cosmo skills on May 1. This year, for the grad updos portion of the competition live models were used. The models then hit the catwalk at noon to shows off their hair, and grad dresses to their fellow students. The winners from this competition were as follows. On June 14, at the Travelodge, entertainment from Yuk Yuks finest will be displaying their comic genius. We hope that this will be a really successful fundraiser. We really want to do well on this, said spokesman Pat Fule. Ian Wallace is one of the two comics headlining the event. Reviews have called him one of Western Canadas fastest rising comics. Described as nerdy, ironic and pop-culture obsessed, Wallace delivers comedy that is smart and punch line-driven, with an up-to-the-moment flavour and classic structure that make him accessible to audiences of all ages. During his first performance year, he was a Calgary finalist in the Battle of Alberta Comedy Competition 2010 and the Great Canadian Laugh-Off 2011. Cocktails begin at 6:30 p.m. by bellying up to the cash bar, and the show starts at 8 p.m. By showing the ticket you get 10 per cent off food at the Station, before or after the show, said Fule. Were also planning to have a silent auction and a 50/50 at the door. Everybodys ticket stubs are numbered at each end, so were going to do a draw for a prize using their ticket stubs. We really want to make it a night where they have a really good chance of winning things, and have a great night of laughs as well. All of the profits from the evening will go to the Youth Club of Strathmore and will be used to continue providing programming for the youth in the community. The tickets are selling for $25 each. RCMP Briefs
On May 2, at around 12:40 p.m., Chestermere Fire Service and Emergency Medical Services along with Chestermere RCMP responded to a residence in the Seagreen Passage area of Chestermere. It was reported that a two-year-old female had fallen from the second story window on to the ground outside the residence. Upon arriving, it was determined that the young child was left unattended near that upper floor window. This window was open with only the screen in place. The young female was seen prior to the fall by family members, who saw her unattended near the open window. The young female was transported by ground ambulance to a Calgary hospital where it was confirmed she did not sustain any serious injuries other that scrapes and bruises. In this instance there will be no criminal charges. Child and Family Services were advised of this occurrence. This incident serves as a reminder to all residents that during the summer months it is important to be mindful of open windows when young children are around. The screens themselves are not able to withstand forces exerted from the weight of a child. Events such as these are preventable but seem to be far too common. Please be cautious and keep this in mind.

The new basics of camping

Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor As the 2013 camping season opens, the basics of camping are the same as when the pioneers fist arrived here. When people buy camping supplies, says Tim Auger, Sports and Rec clerk at Strathmore Canadian Tire, they almost always buy tents, lanterns and cookware. The store also sells a lot of propane for propane stoves. Doug Hornberger, camping associate at Bass Pro Shops in Cross Iron Mills, pares the basics down even further. Theyre going to need a sleeping bag a sleeping pad ... a tent or a tarp and ... food stuff. The essentials are still the same -- warmth, shelter, food, fuel and light but everything about those essentials is new. Screen houses are a new kind of shelter. Just to keep the bugs out, Auger says. The last weekend, weve sold a lot of them. Theres also a lot more cookware to choose from. Canadian Tire sells several kinds of enamel cookware, as well as melamine, steel and plastic varieties. With the introduction of portable deep fryers -- for fish, turkey, and everything in between -- how to cook that food also has new possibilities. Hornberger says, theyre more for the camper whos going to be at a certain spot for a week, or two or three, but although most campers dont occupy a campsite that long, it hasnt hampered the fryers popularity. (Fryers) are very hot, he says. Theyve become more popular each year. Staying warm at night has also evolved. Hornberger reminds campers to get a sleeping bag thats appropriate for the weather, and modern sleeping bags are definitely up to the challenge. Canadian Tire and Bass Pro both have sleeping bags designed to keep you warm even if its 40 degrees below. The mats that go under those sleeping bags have also become state of the art. Some people will insist on buying your standard air mattresses, Hornberger says, where you sleep anywhere from six inches to two feet off the ground. They take up a lot of space, though, and Hornberger says, you always run the risk of waking up ... on the ground. In other words, they leak. The newest style of mat is a Therma-rest. They come in a very small package and theyre self-inflating, Hornberger says. Take it out of the package, make sure (the valve is) undone and it will suck the air into it itself. Despite their size, they hold enough air to insulate you from cold ground. Several guys have come in ... that are anywhere from 160 to 220 pounds, Hornberger says. Theyll lay on it right here on the floor ... and theyll tell me that theyre (lying) right off the ground. Water the most basic need of all is the inspiration for what may be the hottest item this season. Its the Life-Straw Water Filter -- a waterfilter-in-a-straw. Weve sold a ton of them so far, Hornberger says. You put the bottom of the straw into a stream or any other water source, uncap the top, and drink. You dont have to worry about getting any of the pills or any of the other filtration systems, he says. If you get into an emergency situation, its not a bad item to have either. Whether you prefer to camp on the edge of survival mode, or in home-away-from-home luxury, Auger and Hornberger have the same advice for you. Just be prepared, Auger says. Grab a tent, sleeping bags, anything that you really need. Hornberger agrees. Just make sure youre prepared, he says. Make sure you have the absolute basics and youll be okay. Being prepared includes one thing many campers forget. Auger says, theyll come in and always say that they forgot some rope. So be prepared, bring rope, and have a great camping season. Crowther Memorial to start hockey program
Students DARE to say no

Grade 6 students at Westmount Elementary School held their annual Drug Abuse Resistance Education, DARE, Grad on May 3. The students wrote an essay outlining what DARE has taught them, and then a few students were selected to share their essay with their parents and fellow classmates.

Local girls compete in hockey challenge

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Six young ladies with Strathmore ties competed in the ATB Financial Alberta Challenge this past weekend in Medicine Hat. The top 60 bantam girls from Southern Alberta were divided into three teams; likewise for the top 60 in the North. A core development program for womens hockey, this gave all 120 players involved a chance to showcase their skills, but also provided an opportunity to experiment with new linemates from all across the province. Sarah Lecavalier, Korrie Stewart, Hailey McCallum, Paige Russell, Jane Jacobs, and Kierra Scollo of Drumheller all competed in the Challenge. As a team, we just got along really well together, says Paige Russell, who scored three goals in five games over the tournament. She liked the idea of experimenting, and playing with different teammates. It was her first tournament of such size a big step in attaining her dream of playing AAA midget next year, after AAA bantam this past season. Russells teammate in the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League, Jane Jacobs, fractured her wrist attempting to block a shot in the tournament. This was a big loss for the South Lightning in the Challenge; Jacobs had 29 points in 27 games this season for the Rocky Mountain Raiders. It was a sudden shock. I was skating across the net to block that shot and didnt really have time to react. Then I dropped instantly, Jacobs said. Once healed, she intends to play AAA midget next season as well. Jacobs wasnt the only one to be injured. Hailey McCallum, Janes teammate in the tournament, remarked that players on her team were so often hurt that healthy girls had to step up with multiple shifts. In the finals there were over 10 pretty severe ones, like five concussions. It was bad, McCallum said. Her idol, hockey star Hailey Wickenheiser, attended the tournament, and took the time to speak with some of the girls. Like Wickenheiser, McCallum plays lots of fastball in the summers, but is looking forward to her next season in bantam AAA. Kierra Scollo had one goal in the tournament, while Korrie Stewart had one assist. Both forwards played for the South Flyers with Sarah Lecavalier, who had a stellar tournament. The North Red Wings won the tournament, going undefeated all weekend, while the South Coyotes and Lightning each had six points. The South Flyers finished with one point less.
Crowther Memorial Junior High has announced that it is going to start a hockey program in September for students in Grades 7 to 9. This program would allow students to train continuously for hockey while in school from Grade 5 until the end of high school. This is something that weve thought about doing for a while, said Ivan Wright, Principal at Crowther Memorial. There were already two programs within the Golden Hills School Division at (Westmount) Elementary and Strathmore High School, so it makes sense to have a skills program here that acts as a bridge (between elementary and high school). The co-ed program will run from September until the end of February, and there will be 24 spaces available to experienced players. Two classes will be offered, with the classes each getting two to three ice times per week on alternating days. The classes will be held at the Strathmore Family Centre, and two teachers at the school will run the sessions. The cost is $350, and the program would be run according to the following schedule: September to November at the rink, December at the school, and then students would return to the rink for January and February. Ice time in Strathmore is valuable, Wright said. Hockey is still the number one sport here, and the availability of ice time for those who want to improve their skills is going to be a great benefit. ( Junior high) is also an age where there is a need and a want because the kids are trying to further improve their skills. Wright said that Crowther Memorial is in discussions with Strathmore High School about a mentorship program where the high school students would help the junior high students in developing their skills. The older players can help out, and pass on their knowledge, he said. We already make use of other facilities in the town for other sports such as curling, so this was not an issue. And the arena is our next door neighbour, so the proximity is good.

Venom split weekend with a win and a loss

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Jr. Tier II lacrosse team had a come-from-behind victory in their home opener against the Red Deer Renegades last Friday, with a score of 13-12. Cody Betterton scored with one minute remaining for the tie, and then again 50 seconds later for the win. Betterton contributed more than half of the Venoms goals, with seven in the game. He played the lights out that night. He was the leader on the team, Coach Hal Morris said. Betterton also had two assists in the win, and finished the weekend tied for the team lead in points with 17, alongside Hal Morris son, Brady. Saturdays game against the Lethbridge Barracudas was much tougher for the Venom, as Lethbridge went to the provincial finals last year, and only lost six players from their roster. Brady Morris led the way with a hat trick, but Strathmore still fell 16-6. Unfortunately we were missing lots of key players. We were dealing with lots of tired and injured players since we played the night before, Hal Morris said. Austin Allen and Lucas Bobbitt both took the net, impressing their coach, as they faced a lot of shots from a very skilled team. Though the Venom need to improve in motion offense and more discipline on the defensive end, coach Morris still expects to finish near the top or top third of our division this year, if not the top. On May 1 the Strathmore Skate Club held their fourth annual awards night at the Strathmore Civic Centre. 22 awards were handed out to skaters in three different levels Canskate, Junior and Senior. Tour of Alberta cycling route announced

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Tour of Alberta, a 900 km bicycle race throughout Alberta, announced the trails that 15 professional teams of eight riders will follow, with participants from over 20 nations around the world. Its the first year of the tour, and the first race of its type to be held in Canada. Edmontonian Alex Stieda, the first North American to wear the yellow jersey in Tour de France, helped created the proposal for the race to the Rural Alberta Development Fund. The riders will journey from the start in Edmonton on Sept. 3, through the prairies and steep Rocky Mountains, to finish in Calgary on Sept. 8. The prologue of the event begins at Winston Churchill Square, where cyclists will battle for the Tour of Albertas leader jersey by running individual time trials of 7.3 km. Top speeds are expected to reach 80 km/hour. The real journey begins the next day, Sept. 4, as cyclists make their way from Strathcona County to Camrose a distance of 158km. The following day takes the riders to Devon (or Bike Town Alberta). On Sept. 6, the racers will leave Strathmore for Drumheller. Theyll hustle up the 817 Highway into the Canadian Badlands, after beginning their day on 2 Avenue, between 3 Street and Lakeside Boulevard. Itll bring a lot of attention to Strathmore and we have the opportunity to showcase who we are and what to offer here, said Tracy Simpson, recreational events and communication coordinator for the Town. Itll bring the community together as well, with lots of volunteers need, over 200. Sports and recreation is a great way to unite your community. Itll set us up for bigger and better things in the future. The longest distance the riders will have to face is on Sept. 7, as they pedal from Black Diamond to the Canmore Nordic Centre about 200 km away (with 50 km uphill). The ensuing day, the teams will finish in downtown Calgary at Centre Street and 4 Avenue, passing along Memorial Drive and the Bow River. Giro DItalia Champion Ryder Hesjedal is confirmed to be racing with his Garmin-Sharp team; they currently sit at fifth in the world. Hesjedal was the first Canadian to ever capture the Giro race last year. Modeled after professional races such as the Tour de France, the tour will be sanctioned under Union Cycliste Internationale rules. The route is designed to be safe for cyclists, spectators and motorists. The tour will be broadcast on Sportsnet in Canada, but will be followed internationally as well.

Strathmore area players part of Allan Cup championship team

Ashad Mukadam Times Contributor Four Strathmore area players were part of the Bentley Generals hockey team that won the 2013 Allan Cup on April 20: Brett Thurston, Jeremy Colliton, Keenan Desmet, and Kyle Sheen. The 2013 edition of the historic tournament was played in Bentley, with the championship game being televised live on TSN. In the Allan Cup tournament, Desmet was third on the team with four points, while Colliton scored a goal. It was our goal to win, and we were very excited to win, Colliton said. Anything less would have been a disappointment. Winning the Allan Cup brought back memories of winning the Memorial Cup in 2002 with the Kootenay Ice, said Sheen. Its not something that happens very often, and to win any hockey championship is a great feeling. When we won the cup, it was a surreal moment because, coming from a family of hockey players, it was a oncein-a-lifetime experience to win any professional championship, Desmet said. And to do it in a prestigious tournament was a great opportunity. Colliton, who is from Blackie and a former UFA Bison, played junior hockey with the Prince Albert Raiders and was a former second round pick of the New York Islanders. He also was a member of three World Junior Hockey Championship Teams during his junior career. After finishing with the Raiders, he spent time in the AHL with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, and has also played 57 games with the Islanders. In between his stints in the NHL/AHL system, he spent the 2009-2010 season

in the Swedish Elite League playing for Rgle BK. He felt that it was a great experience to play in a tournament with such a long history. His journey to the Generals was an interesting one. He was dealing with injury issues, which prevented him from playing pro hockey during this past season. The general manager of the Generals asked him if he was interested in playing. After talking it over with Thurston, Colliton agreed to make the trip to Bentley. I was comfortable (in Bentley) because there were already some players on the team that were from Strathmore, and I had played with and against some of the other players during my career, he said. Desmet, who is from Strathmore, played minor hockey in Strathmore and with the UFA Bisons before moving on to the AJHL. After a season with the Olds Grizzlys, he went to the BCHL to play for the Victoria Grizzlies and Salmon Arm Silverbacks before going to the US to attend the University of Alabama-Huntsville and play hockey there. He won an NCAA (CHA) championship with Alabama-Huntsville in 2009-2010. During the 2011-2012 season, he went to a French league team called Evry. He also was happy about being able to play in the Allan Cup. It was a great experience because of the history of the cup and the (Generals), he said of playing in the tournament. It was also a privilege to play in it. He got onto the team through conversations with his brother, who played alongside Thurston with the Generals last year, and Thurston himself. Both of them suggested that Desmet join the Generals. I had never played professionally (in North America) before, so after talking with my brother and Brett, I gave the GM of the Generals a call, and I went up there, he said. It was a great experience. Sheen, who lives in Chestermere,
played minor hockey in Strathmore, and then went on to play for the Kootenay Ice and Kamloops Blazers. He continued his career in the United Hockey League before going on to Mount Royal University (when it was known as Mount Royal College). After a year at Mount Royal, he went back to the US to play in the SPHL and Central Hockey League. He was happy that he even got a chance to play after falling ill the week prior. I was excited to be in the line-up for the weekend games after having the flu for a few days, said Sheen. It was tough not to be playing earlier in the week because of it. Sheens journey to play for the Generals was also an interesting story. He was supposed to play for the Lloydminster Oil Kings last year, but it fell through. After talking with Thurston, Sheen texted someone from the Generals, tried out for them, and was on the team. Thurston, who is also from Strathmore, played minor hockey in Strathmore before joining the AAA Bantam Team Extreme in Airdrie. After bantam, he played in the WHL with the Brandon Wheat Kings, and then went on to attend the University of Calgary and play with the Dinos. After he finished school, he went to the US to play professional hockey, starting with the Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League for a couple of seasons, where he won a league championship in 2006-2007. After spending two seasons in the ECHL, he returned to the Eagles for two more seasons. He played on the Generals last season, and decided to return to the team this year, which allowed for the other Strathmore players to join him in Bentley. Sheen mentioned how happy he was to finally win a championship alongside Thurston. Winning this championship with him was great, Sheen said. After only getting silver medals together in minor hockey, to finally get gold together means something.

The weather participated for the Carseland Fire Hall who, with the support of Strathmore Rural Fire Fighting Association Board of Directors, hosted their first firefighters challenge on May 4. The event saw departments come out and compete in timed practical use exercises.

Ashad Contributor Times Reporter At the Hockey Alberta Central Zones annual awards ceremony on April 19, Strathmore area referee Justin Geeraert received both a pin recognizing his ten years of service in the zone, and the Al Peterson Memorial Award for Most Improved Official. Both awards are big accomplishments in my career so far, Geeraert said. Its pretty cool to get recognized for them, and (I was happy when I received both the pin and award). And my parents were impressed when I got recognized for these accomplishments. (His father and I) are very proud of him that he achieved these accomplishments, his mother, Kim, said. Not every referee gets an award, so him winning the Peterson Award is great. The Peterson Award has been active since 2009. According to the Central Zones website, it is awarded to the official that has progressed the most through their attendance at clinics/ seminars and their on-ice efforts. Geeraert started refereeing at the age of 13 because he wanted to get into it, and felt that it would be a great experience. He also wanted to help out the kids in some way, and since he knew the rules of hockey, he felt that this was the best way to do that. Geeraert mentioned that his most memorable moment from his career so far was getting to referee during the Junior B Provincials last year. Just getting selected to it was pretty cool, he said. Also, being able to work the bronze medal game was also a pretty cool experience for me. When he looked back on the past ten years since the start of his career, Geeraert talked about other moments that stood out. Working the Hockey Alberta South Final last year was a great experience, said Geeraert. I had a lot of fun doing that. Also, getting invited to and attending the Hockey Alberta Referee Development Camp last summer was something that was a really cool experience for me. Hes already been hired to work as a linesman for the Alberta Junior Hockey League next season, with the hope that the Western Hockey League is not too far behind. Justins goal is to be in the WHL with his friend Clayton Hall, who won the Peterson Award in 2010, Kim said. Winning the Peterson Award is just another step towards that goal for him.
