How to remove the EPO Agent

The McAfee EPO Agent provides an essential service as part of our virus defenses. It ensures that McAfee VirusScan is installed and running with current virus definitions and effective policies. It should not be removed from any computer that connects to Dalhousie's campus network. However, if you leave Dalhousie and are installing other antivirus software or if you are having a problem and wish to eliminate the McAfee VirusScan and EPO Agent as possible factors, then you will need to uninstall the EPO Agent. There is no Windows uninstaller for the EPO Agent. To remove the McAfee EPO agent do the following: 1. From the "Start" menu, select "Run". 2. For Windows 2000/XP, type "cmd" and click ok. For Windows 95/98/ME, type "command" and click ok. This will open a window where you can enter commands. 3. Depending on when you installed McAfee, the uninstall program may be located in either the "Network Associates" or "McAfee" folder:

"Network Associates" Directory

For Windows 2000/XP: Enter: cd \ Enter: cd "Program Files" Enter: cd "Network Associates" Enter: cd "Common Framework" Enter: frminst /remove=agent For Windows 95/98/ME: Enter: cd \ Enter: cd progra~1 Enter: cd networ~1 Enter: cd common~1 Enter: frminst /remove=agent For Windows 95/98/ME: Enter: cd \ Enter: cd progra~1 Enter: cd mcafee Enter: cd common~1 Enter: frminst /remove=agent

"McAfee" Directory
For Windows 2000/XP: Enter: cd \ Enter: cd "Program Files" Enter: cd McAfee Enter: cd "Common Framework" Enter: frminst /remove=agent

4. "Enter" means type the command and press the "enter" key. 5. When you run the "frminst" program from the command line, a window will open reporting the removal process. When the

removal process is complete, the EPO Agent's icon ("blue shield") should disappear from the Windows task bar. 6. Enter: exit This will close the command window. After you have removed the McAfee EPO Agent, you can uninstall McAfee VirusScan and it will not be reinstalled by the EPO Agent. In case of problems, restart in safe mode and use "frminst /forceuninstall". If that doesn't work, go to "c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Network Associates\Common Framework" and delete the "FrameworkManifest.xml" file, then reinstall McAfee EPO.

When you are done

If you removed EPO to test for software conflicts, it should be restored as soon as possible... If you discovered a problem, contact one of the Help Desks or Network and Systems (UCIS.NetSys@Dal.CA) to obtain assistance. If there was no problem with the EPO and VirusScan, restore them by downloading and installing the EPO again. You can then wait for the EPO to download and install VIrusScan or right click on the EPO icon and select "Update Now".
