TOEFL College Preparation
The Intensive English Language program of U.S. Ling Institute offers 7 levels of proficiency from novice to college preparation. The integrated structure of curricula develops skills through self-contained units gradually increasing students abilities to understand and communicate with native speakers. The program will help the learners to express their ideas fluently and accurately, enhance vocabulary, increase reading comprehension and speed as well as improve structure and organization in writing essays. Each level of language proficiency is 16 weeks long and requires 20 clock-hours of attendance with total of 320 clock-hours per semester language training. Students who start at the Skill-Building Level 1 will need at least six semesters (two years) to complete the program but there are many factors that affect a person's ability to learning English including any previous study, motivation, natural ability, and use of English here in Utah. Unfortunately, some students and parents believe that just being in the US or Utah will guarantee that one will learn the language, and this isn't necessarily true. The more students apply what they are learning outside of class, the greater their chances of learning English well. The only secrets to success we have always found to be true are hard work and dedication. If you start from level 4, it would take three semesters (one full year) to complete our program. If you fail U.S. Ling classes or take a break from studying, it will delay your full program completion date.
High Intermediate Level 4 (16 weeks: 20 hours per week= 320 clock-hours per semester). At a High Intermediate Level 4, students will expand the understanding and use of grammar structures more accurately, meaningfully, and appropriately. The material for the Intermediate level 4 will review the material covered in Level 3 (subject/verb agreement, the use of the Perfect forms, Modals and idiomatic structures) and focus on Clauses. A wide variety of communicative activities will provide opportunity for active language use enabling students to discuss various topics with one another and talk to native speakers with ease understanding them in authentic settings. Students will be involved in individual small presentations and learn the basics of research. Writing skills will develop from composing 150-word to 200-word essays within 30 minutes. At high intermediate level, students will also focus on creative writing skills and master techniques of free writing.
In addition to the skills mentioned under advanced level, the course will help them successfully function in a college or university environment. They will be listening to lectures, taking notes, preparing and conducting group and individual presentations. They will learn to develop analytical reading and critical thinking skills through problem solving and other techniques. Students will acquire research skills necessary for presentations and writing projects and prepare them to overcome the learning and cultural challenges they may face in their academic journey.
School Application Fee (one time, non- refundable) - $100 Fall semester (16 weeks/320 clock hours/per level) $1,700 Winter (16 weeks/320 clock hours/per level) $1,700 Spring-Summer semester (16 weeks/320 clock hours/per level) $1,500 Cost of books may vary per level (not included in tuition) $80-$100
Attendance Policy
U.S LING INSTITUTE expects students to attend school every day. When you miss class, you not only fall behind on new material, but you miss the hands-on repetition that is so important in learning and developing your new skills. MINIMUM STANDARD U.S. LING requires the following minimums for graduation: 90% cumulative attendance in the classroom. You are expected to inform the front office if you are going to be absent and provide a legitimate excuse. TRACKING Attendance is tracked in every class period by the instructor. If you are late for more than 10 minutes of any class period, you will be marked absent for the whole hour. Each day the teacher submits the class attendance records to the Designated School Official (DSO), who records the data in the students electronic records. The cumulative attendance information is contained on the month progress report given to all students each month. If you do not agree with any of the attendance date, you must submit a written appeal to the DSO or PDSO within one week of the progress report distribution. At the end of the month after the month end date, the monthly attendance date becomes permanent and can no longer be challenged. TARDINESS AND EARLY DEPARTURES U.S.LING INSTITUTE expects students to be in class on time to school every day. When you arrive late to class you not only miss the material that has been presented, but you disrupt both the instructor and your fellow students. if you arrive late for class, your instructor will record a Tardy. If you leave before the instructor dismisses class, the instructor will record an Early Departure. If you are Tardy or have an Early Departure three or more in a module, you will be placed on probation for the remainder of the semester and be required to see the DSO for counseling. ATTENDANCE PROBATION If you do not have cumulative attendance of at least 90% at the end of the month, you will be placed on Attendance probation for the next month. You must meet with the DSO and abide by the terms outlined in the Attendance Probation notice. At the end of the semester on Attendance Probation, you must be making progress toward meeting the 90% cumulative attendance requirement, and have met all of the terms of the Attendance probation. Failure to do so may result in termination from school. After no more than one semester on attendance probation, you must again meet the 90% cumulative attendance requirement, or you will be dismissed from school.
