Going Pro: Careers in Sports Management and Marketing

Main Panel Kara Bachman
Chicago Sports Commission Business Development B.S, International Relations, Colgate University M.B.A., International Finance & Sports Management, Loyola University

Internships Panel Kara Kabellis

United States Soccer Federation HR Generalist B.A., Political Science, University of Wisconsin M.A., Lewis University; Clinical Psychology Career Transitions: I was able to work remotely as a Media Relations Associate, so that allowed me to keep my HR Assistant position with Classy Limousine. I was able to explore a new field, PR/Media Relations, and ultimately discovered that I was best suited for Human Resources.

Ryan Carter
NIKE Running and Digital Sports Brand Manager B.A., Journalism, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Career Transitions: Moved from fundraising and non-profits into the private sector and had to take a significant step backward in order to then build the experiences necessary in a new field to move into a more leadership-focused position over time.

Sam Morgan
Exact Sports Elite Prospect Camp, Program Manager B.A., Political Science, Minor in Business Administration, DePaul University Career Transitions: It is early in my career, but there are a couple of significant 'life' transitions that have influenced my career path. The first transition involved selecting a major and how I want to position myself for the job search post-graduation. The second major transition came postgraduation when I was deciding whether I wanted to work in a big organization or a small company.

Vanessa Mizel

Girls in the Game Camps and Clinics Manager B.A., Communications, DePaul University Career Transitions: The biggest change I have had is moving from corporate to non-profit. I was in health club management where we targeted a specific community and demographic to non-profit where we have the flexibility to Wahaj Tariq travel and I am actually leading programs and interacting with the youth while National Football League (NFL) Fellow managing. B.S., Business Management, DePaul University

Bryan Robinson
Chicago Cubs Vice President, Human Resources B.S., Human Resource Management, Michigan State M.S., Labor Relations & Human Resources, Michigan State

Interviewing Practices Panel Kim Beauvais

Big Ten Network Vice President, Human Resources & Business Operations B.A., Sports Administration and Sports Marketing, Valparaiso University Career Transitions: In my expanded role, I oversee all business operations strategy and execution and human resource functions as well as management and administration of contracts and travel. I was part of the original management team hired when the network launched in 2007, and have overseen all strategic human resources functions, including executive leadership and talent management programs, during that time. In 2010, BTN was named 24th on Brill Streets Top Chicago companies for Gen Y. The network, now with more than 100 employees, is the only national network with headquarters in Chicago.

Timothy Weaver
ESPN Local Account Manager B.A., Political Science with a minor in Business Administration, DePaul University Certifications: Jacobs & Stone Multichannel Marketing Communications Certificate Program; Building an Effective Marketing Plan Certificate Program; Practical Internet Marketing Certificate Program; CIMA Interactive Marketing Certificate Program; Marketing Communications (IMC) program

Jessica Worley
Chicago Fire Soccer Club Senior Director of Corporate Partnerships B.A., Advertising/Public Relations, Penn State Career Transitions: After being in sports for six years with the Philadelphia Eagles, (and four years in college with Penn State Football) my husband and I moved to Madison, WI while he pursued his MBA at the University of Wisconsin. There wasn't a professional sports team in Madison, so my career took a completely different, but relevant and beneficial path as I worked in the tourism industry. As soon as we relocated to Chicago, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in sports again, and after considering many opportunities, I chose the Chicago Fire Soccer Club and Major League Soccer.

Stephanie Jensen
Intersport Director of Marketing & Ticket Sales B.A., Communications, Purdue University M.B.A., Integrated Marketing Communications, DePaul University Career Transitions: I stepped out of the sports industry for a few years while working at DePaul in order to work on my MBA (was enrolled in the part-time program, so took classes in the evening while working full-time). My current position allowed me to combine my experience while at the White Sox with the marketing skills/experience I gained during my time at DePaul.

Ashley Beirne
Red Frog Events Partnership Director B.A., Marketing Sales and Leadership & Sports Management, DePaul University Career Transitions: After more than three years at Red Frog Events I have had experience in all aspects of the business. When I started in January 2010, there were a total of four employees; therefore, I had to become a think-onmy-feet, multifaceted, young professional that would give anything a shot. I have had the opportunity to create an entire event merchandise store, race direct 2,500-25,000 people events, build internal broadcast marketing negotiations infrastructure, as well as conduct more than 500 interviews in a HR role, and creating and building up the partnership marketing department. Through all of those role transitions I was able to realize my true passion which is partnership marketing/sponsorship sales.
