PHYSICS: Equations of Velocity and Constant Acceleration Key Terms: Displacement: The difference between the initial and

final positions of an object. (d) (d= xf-xi ) measured in meters Velocity: The directional speed of an object. (v) (Where speed is displacement/time) (v=[xf-xi]/t ) measured in meters per second Acceleration: The directional change in velocity over time. (a) (a= [vf-vi]/t ) measured in meters per second2 g: The 'gravity constant' or acceleration due to gravity; on earth, this is -9.8m/s2 Equations: The general equation for velocity: 1) vf = vi + a(t) [Final velocity as a function of initial velocity, acceleration, and time] From this equation we can derive several other useful equations: 2) d= (vi + vf) t 3) d= vi(t) + a(t2) 4) d= vf(t) a(t2) 5) vf2= vi2 + 2a(d) [Displacement as a function of initial and final velocity and time] [Displacement as a function of initial velocity, acceleration, and time] [Displacement as a function of final velocity, acceleration, and time] [Final velocity as a function of initial velocity, acceleration, and displacement]

Example: Lucy Physic, and her annoying younger brother Sam Physic live on the second floor of a three story apartment building. Sam knows from experience that dropping a water balloon from the roof (10 meters high) will cause it to rupture spectacularly. Sam arranges to meet Lucy on the sidewalk in front of their apartment, and rushes to the roof with a supply of missiles. Just as he had expected, Lucy appears on the sidewalk below. He holds out the first balloon, directly over her head, and lets go. 1.2 seconds later, his mom sticks her head out of the window (directly in the path of his balloon) to ask Lucy why she is on the sidewalk. The earth shattering question: will his balloon hit Lucy or his mother? (The second floor window is 3 meters below the point where Sam will release the balloon.) Known: a= -9.8m/s2 vi = 0 tf = 1.2s Need to know: d at time 1.2s

Use equation? 3 : d= vi(t) + a(t2) d= (0) (1.2s) + (-9.8m/s2) (1.2s)2 = 0 + (-7. 056m) = -7.056 m Since his mother's head is at -3 meters at 1.2 seconds, and the balloon is at -7.056m, Sam is lucky enough not to hit his mother with the balloon. However, since that means his mom will have seen the balloon hit Lucy's head, he's probably still in trouble.
