Advertisements Social Studies Lesson Plan Day 5 Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson is created for third grade students and it is an extended lesson (for day 4) that deals with making choices and the use of advertisements. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Communities pages 278 and 279. Target Population: 3rd Grade Students at all learning levels. Whole group and individual. Materials: Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Communities. Poster boards Markers Colored pencils Magazines Computers Scissors Glue Objectives: E11.3.1 - Identify and explain what business owners do. I can explain what business owners do. Procedure: 1. Read together pages 278 and 279. After each advertisement, TW ask the class if it is a good ad. Why or why not? What makes it good? 2. TW ask the class which ad is the best? SW share their opinion with their shoulder partner. After a few minutes, TW call on volunteers. 3. TW explain todays activity. With a partner, today you will be creating your own ad. You will need to create a product/item that you would like to advertise and convince the class to buy. Your ad needs to be big, bold, and colorful like the ones in the book. You will be creating your ad on a poster board. Students may either draw their product, or find something in a magazine or online that they would like to use. This product needs to be original and made up (something like Wimp Away. Use this and your wimpiness will disappear). If students are struggling to come up with an idea, TW help them. 4. Closure: Pairs will present their ad.

Advertisements Social Studies Lesson Plan Day 5 Assessment: TW be collecting students poster boards and may even hang them in the hallway. Reflection: Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part of the lesson will be teaching them that the cooler and ad looks, the more willing someone might be to buy it. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most difficult part will be helping students come up with a product to advertise. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I would follow up this lesson referring to the ads throughout the week. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont grasp the concept I would pull them aside for additional help. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I may need to assign each pairing a specific item to advertise. Im not sure if theyll be creative enough. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part was thinking about how much time the activity will take and finding a standard.
