A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: Lesson two of unit on people, cultures, and civilizations. Students will learn more about the regions discussed in prior lesson beginning with the Arctic and Subarctic Region and the Inuits. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 5th Grade Skill Level: Students at all learning levels Grouping: Whole class and small group C. Materials: Floor plan of modern home Paper for drawing Map of Alaska D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards H1.5.2 Identify and describe the attributes of Native American nations in the local region and North America.

Student-Friendly Standards What was life like for the Inuit?

E. Procedure: 1. Develop interest by having students close their eyes and imagine our world without cars, central heating, shopping centers, or modern technologies. Discuss. 2. Have students close eyes again and imagine living in the Arctic of Alaska. How would it be different than Nevada? Show map of Alaska. Discuss. 3. Hand out floor plan and paper. Look over modern floor plan and have students draw floor plan of their home. Discuss their neighborhood and a typical day. 4. Discuss the type of housing in which Inuits were accustomed to living. Students will draw a floor plan of an Inuit home and compare differences of their home and the Inuit home and neighborhood. What are the major differences? What are the natural light sources for each? What are the differences for heating and cooling?

5. CLOSURE: Students will share their drawings in small groups.

F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Evaluation of floor plans and verbal summarization of differences between modern life to Native American Inuit life. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students will understand "what life was like for the Inuits." Comparing the differences in floor plans and "neighborhoods" along with their verbal responses during class discussion will determine comprehension. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? It will be easiest to teach the modern day lifestyle of students because that is something familiar to them. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging will be to help them visualize what life was life for the Inuit and the climate where they lived. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? The remainder of the unit will be to incorporate different Native American cultures so that students will have a general idea of what life was like before European influence. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I could review the Power Point presentation from lesson one, which included pictures of the Inuit and their way of life. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? This lesson is only a glimpse of Inuit culture. As I become more familiar with teaching and what can be covered in a lesson, I could alter the information to accommodate the time frame allotted for discussion of this subject. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The assessment was most difficult for this lesson, because I wonder if I will truly know if students understand by their drawings. Also, all students are not likely to participate in a discussion, so more detail might be needed when developing this assessment.
