Ione Community Church News letter

On March 16th Jay and I attended a regional event with the Disciples of Christ on Community Gardens in Portland. It was a different kind of event because rather than building one or helping to cultivate one that was already in existence, we gathered to talk about having a region-wide community garden where we each grew food in our own spaces in containers and then offered the food to a food bank, community meal or food pantry when it is ripe. At this event, because of a generous grant from the Ofce of Disciples Women, we were sent home with two containers and some soil to begin our garden. Jay and I have placed our containers in front of the parsonage so that others can see their progress, which, so far has been minimal, but I have faith will increase. As a part of the program we will be sending pictures to the region so that they can be posted on the regions webpage, christianchurchinoregon.org, and on their facebook page. A second element to our day in Portland was a presentation by Angela Boss, Associate Director of Program Development for Foods Resource Bank which is one of the entities that works with Week of Compassion and One Great Hour of Sharing. Foods Resource Bank, or FRB, raises resourcesto support the capability and desire of small farmers indeveloping countries to grow lasting solutionsto hunger. They have 50-60 programs at any given time and the programs focus on developing small-holder agriculture, often in the most remote and poorest regions of the world. They see agriculture as the solution to hunger experienced in much of the world. The reason they focus on agriculture is that much of the world's poor are farmers or have access to land. Having enough to eat for the whole year is dependent on growing enough to last all year. Hunger is often a seasonal issue as farmers run out of last year's food before the current year's harvest. If provided with training and basic inputs like seeds or small tools, farmers can increase their harvest and therefore their food security. FRB works to solve the problem of hunger systemically and with the help of the hungry. Jay and I were so impressed with Angelas presentation that we decided that this fall we would like to do a personal fundraiser for FRB through Week of Compassion. We will be raising pumpkins and will invite Ione to purchase them (by donation) from the back lot of the parsonage. I would also like to invite Angela, who lives in Bend, to come and do a presentation for our community this fall, which she is delighted to do. Obviously the day had an impact on me. My greatest take home being that Margaret Meades quote, Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has is indeed true. On June 2nd Ione Community Church will be celebrating Membership Sunday during our 10 oclock service. On this day, any who wish to become members are invited to come forward so that we, as a congregation, can ofcially welcome you into the fold. There are many who are involved in the life of the church but who have not ofcially placed their membership here. This is an opportunity to make that commitment ofcial. If you are interested in this, but uncertain what it means to be a member of ICC, please come meet with Pastor Stacy on May 26th and June 2nd at 9am so we can discuss those things and share about the traditions of our denominations and of this particular congregation. If you have questions please call Pastor Stacy at 541.422.7530 or email her at stacy.shelton@gmail.com. Also on this Sunday we will be giving Bibles to our fourth graders and recognizing the gifts of our teachers who are so valuable in the life of the church. This will be a wonderfully exciting, spirit-lled and fun service for us all!

Worship Time Change!

Baccalaureate June 4th

We will be hosting Baccalaureate this year on June 4th at 7pm. There are several youth in this years graduating class that have been involved in youth group along with church member Shadow Kendrick. As we get closer to the date we will have a sign up sheet for cookies for the reception following the service. We hope you will come to support our youth in this very important occasion.

VBS Volunteers Needed!

We are still in need of some volunteers for Vacation Bible School. Tara Proudfoot has graciously agreed to lead our preschool group but needs an adult helper. We are also looking for people to help by spending the time with one age group, going from workshop to workshop. This job requires no advanced planning, but lets you be involved in all the fun aspects of VBS. Please contact Pastor Stacy or Erin Heideman if you would like to be involved in this very fun ministry!

And a time to change to our Summer Worship schedule! Beginning May 26th worship will be at 10am. We hope youll join us!

Youth Vocal & Handbell Concert June 15th, 6:30pm

The youth from Raytown Christian Church in Raytown, Missouri will be with us to provide music on the 15th of June at 6:30pm. This is their 42nd annual trip and they are heading to the Pacific Northwest for the first time almost a decade. Their youth bell choir is made up of 6th-12th grade youth and has been nationally recognized by the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers. Their vocal choir, readers and drama leaders help round out a full program around the theme of Courage! Their goal is to help stretch their youth's understanding of what it means not only to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but also be in partnership and relationship with our brothers and sisters in other parts of the world. Please come and welcome them to our little part of the world!
