The Holy Spirit

by Terri Copeland Pearsons
I. The New Birth Alone Is Not the Fullness of Our Salvation A. Were born again to receive the promise of the Spirit (Galatians 3:13-14) 1. As Christians we are born of the Spirit (John 3:5-8) 2. He is the One who bears witness with our spirits that we are sons of God (Romans 8:16) 3. We can gain understanding of the Spirit because we have His Word, which has much to say about Him 4. He is sent with the specific assignment to teach, guide and reveal (John 16:13-15) B. Man lost his place in the realm of the spirit (the heavenly realm, heaven) 1. Man is a three-part being: spirit, soul and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23) a. Adam was created a speaking spirit, like God who is a Spirit (John 4:24), in three parts: Father, Son and Holy Spirit b. Heaven and earth were together, divinely connected c. When Adam embraced sin, he and his domain were disconnected from the Lord d. Adam was kicked out of the realm of spiritual authority where heaven and earth were together 2. Man had to be reconnected to life before he could re-enter his spiritual authority C. The spiritual realm was reopened by Jesus blood (Ephesians 2:13; Hebrews 10:19-20) D. We have access by the Spirit (Ephesians 2:18). He makes it real. E. First Example: 1. Jesus said, Receive the Holy Spirit and He breathed on them (John 20:22) 2. This was the same as in Genesis 2:7. Life was breathed into man and he was alive with the life of God. F. This time there was more givento take us beyond Adams position, all the way to include the power of the throne working in this world, making us witnesses of a heavenly kingdom (Acts 1:4, 8) II. How Important Is the Holy Spirit to the Plan of God for Mankind? A. The Spirit and the Word are the two essential elements on which our relationship with the Lord is founded. God is a Spirit. We must worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:23). 1. The Word reveals the things of the Spirit, and the Spirit quickens, reveals and brings to life the Word: It is the Spirit Who gives life [He is the Life-giver]. (John 6:63, AMP) 2. The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life. (John 6:63, AMP) 3. The Word and the Spirit always agree, and more importantly, they are one. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one (1 John 5:7). 4. Everything from the very beginning has been by the Spirit moving on what God said. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, Let there be light, and there was light (Genesis 1:1-3, NIV). The pattern was established: God speaks and the Spirit moves. 5. Everything is because of the Word but by the Spirit B. Every part of Jesus life, ministry and redemptive work was by the Spirit 1. How did Jesus come? a. The Word was made flesh (John 1:14), but how? 1

b. Then the angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you [like a shining cloud]; and so the holy (pure, sinless) Thing (Offspring) which shall be born of you will be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:35, AMP) 2. How did Jesus enter the ministry? a. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized, and [while He was still] praying, the [visible] heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven, saying, You are My Son, My Beloved! In You I am well pleased and find delight! (Luke 3:21-22, AMP) 3. How did Jesus qualify for ministry? a. Then Jesus, full of and controlled by the Spirit, was led by the Spirit into the wilderness...and Jesus went back full of and under the power of the Spirit. (Luke 4:1-2, 14) 4. How did Jesus fulfill His ministry? a. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. (Luke 4:18-19) b. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. (Acts 10:38) 5. How can His death 2,000 years ago affect someones life now? a. ...Who by virtue of [His] eternal Spirit has offered Himself as an unblemished sacrifice to God. (Hebrews 9:14, AMP) 6. How was He raised from the dead? a. And if the Spirit of Him Who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, [then] He Who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also restore to life your mortal (shortlived, perishable) bodies through His Spirit Who dwells in you. (Romans 8:11, AMP) b. Jesus was justified through the Spirit (1 Timothy 3:16) c. He was quickened by the Spirit (1 Peter 3:18) C. Everything God did for man came by the work of the Holy Spirit 1. The kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. (Romans 14:17) 2. We are born again of the Spirit (John 3:5-8) 3. Our life with God is in and by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:8-9, AMP) 4. Love is in our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5) 5. All love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control are produced by the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23, AMP) 6. We abound in hope by the Holy Ghost (Romans 15:13) 7. There is no condemnation for those who follow after the Spirit (Romans 8:1) 8. We crucify the flesh by the power of the Spirit (Romans 8:13; Galatians 5:24-25) 9. We are led by the Spirit (Romans 8:14) 10. He assures us we are Gods children (Romans 8:16, AMP) 11. Paul said that all Christ had done through him (preaching, signs and wonders) was through the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:19, AMP) 12. We have been marked as His own by the Spirit (Ephesians 4:30, AMP) 13. He guides us into the Truth, revealing Gods Word, Gods will and Gods voice (John 16:13, AMP) 14. The future is revealed by the Spirit (John 16:13, AMP) 15. The Spirit reveals what belongs to Jesus that He has given to us (John 16:14, AMP) 2

16. We wait with patience by the Spirit (Galatians 5:5) 17. We obey the truth through the Spirit (1 Peter 1:22) 18. Our fellowship is of the Spirit (Philippians 2:1) 19. We have access to the Father by the Spirit (Ephesians 2:18, AMP) 20. We worship God in the Spirit (John 4:24; Philippians 3:3) 21. We form a dwelling place for God by the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18) 22. Every blessing is given by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:3, AMP) 23. The Spirit gives life (2 Corinthians 3:6) 24. Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty (2 Corinthians 3:17) 25. Our bodies are quickened, now and at the resurrection by the Spirit (Romans 8:11) 26. We are changed from glory to glory by the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18) 27. The Spirit is the guarantee of a glorified body (2 Corinthians 5:4-5, AMP) 28. The Spirit is the only witness both in heaven and in earth (1 John 5:8) 29. He is the Spirit of grace (Zechariah 12:10) 30. He is the Spirit of supplication (Zechariah 12:10) 31. He is the Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel, the Spirit of might, the Spirit of knowledge, the Spirit of the fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2) 32. He is the Spirit of holiness (Romans 1:4) 33. He is the Spirit of life (Romans 8:2) 34. He is the Spirit of meekness (1 Corinthians 4:21) 35. He is the Spirit of glory (1 Peter 4:14) 36. He is the Spirit of God (1 Peter 4:14) D. The Holy Spirit is worthy of honor 1. Dont lie to or tempt Him (Acts 5:1-11) 2. He that blasphemes the Spirit shall not be forgiven (Luke 12:10, AMP) 3. Doing despite to the Spirit is worthy of severe judgment (Hebrews 10:28-29) E. Summary: Everything God created for man came by the work of the Holy Spirit. Everything Jesus reclaimed through the cross and resurrection was a work of the Holy Spirit. Our life with God is in and by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:8-9, AMP). III. The Purposes of the Spirit A. The Father will give you another comforter 1. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever (John 14:16, AMP) 2. Another is the Greek word allos meaning one of the very same kind, same character, same everything, or a duplicate. B. WE are His assignment. You can tell by the Greek word used to describe Him: par-ak-lay-tos. I will ask the Father and He will give you. C. Descriptions Defined: 1. IV. The Three Dimensions of the Spirit A. With you (John 14:16-17, AMP); This is Old Testament 1. Among everyone 2. Upon a few: the prophet, the priest and the king B. In you (John 14:17, AMP); This is New Testament 1. Individually 2. Among the believers C. Fullness of both 1. Baptized into the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5, AMP) 2. Filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4, AMP) D. The explosiveness of God in and on man displayed (Acts 2:1-21) E. Results 1. Souls saved [3,000] (Acts 2:41) 2. Signs and wonders (Acts 2:43) 3. Peter changed! He went from hiding to preaching on the streets. 4. Turned the world upside down and became known as Christianslittle anointed ones V. TonguesThe Master Key to the Kingdom A. It is the Fathers good pleasure to give you the kingdom (Luke 12:32). The kingdom of God is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost (Romans 14:17). B. Tongues is the only operation of the Spirit not in the Old Testament C. With the coming of the Spirit in fullness, all the operations of the Spirit are now on a higher dimension 1. We are partakers of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4) 2. We are fellow workers with Him, so we are not blind mouthpieces (2 Corinthians 6:1) 3. Being filled with the Spirit and speaking in tongues is the bridge to operating in that higher dimension D. Gods Swiss Army Knife 1. All operations of the Spirit are inside of tongues. He pulls out the appropriate tool as it pleases Him (1 Corinthians 12:11) 2. Everything the Spirit does and everyway He does it can be touched through tongues 4

3. No other work of the Spirit is so exhaustive, so vital or so available. No wonder Jesus said it was a sign of those who truly believe (Mark 16:17). E. Those who walk in the greatest revelations of the Word and have the greatest demonstrations of signs and wonders pray in other tongues. (In Mark 16:17 it is the summary of most spiritual activity.) VI. TonguesAn Overview of Purpose A. 1 Corinthians 14 reads a lot like a dictionary. It gives many different end results. 1. Speaks not to men but to God (1 Corinthians 14:2, AMP) a. Turns your face away from men (the natural) to Him 2. You edify yourself (1 Corinthians 14:4) a. May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the [Holy] Spirit [Himself indwelling your innermost being and personality]. (Ephesians 3:16, AMP) 3. Praying in tongues refreshes and relieves the mind of resourcing (1 Corinthians 14:14-15) a. For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing. (Isaiah 28:11-12) b. Mental knowledge is limited in scope (cant see the future) and is influenced and corrupted by human reason and emotion c. Tongues keeps praying on a level higher than mental knowledge can produce d. Pray that you may interpret (1 Corinthians 14:13). Not only ask, but pray through to interpretation. Dont quit too soon. e. Interpretationmight be instant enlightenment or might come later or might play out 4. You give thanks well (1 Corinthians 14:16-17) a. Helps locate true gratitude and love for God (Romans 5:5) b. Works with interpretation c. Expresses gratitude, love and worship when words in your known language fall short d. Is not a substitute for praise in your known language e. Pray that you interpret 5. Is a sign to unbelievers (1 Corinthians 14:22) a. Those who believe, speak (Mark 16:17) b. If tongues is only a sign to you, you are not believing. This includes those who have been filled but are not active in their praying. 6. Is a keying to walking in love a. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God. (Jude 20-21) b. Such hope never disappoints or deludes or shames us, for Gods love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us. (Romans 5:5, AMP) B. Tongues: Mystery Master, Problem Solver (1 Corinthians 14:2)What kind of mysteries? 1. The mysteries of God HimselfHis thoughts, feelings and purposes (1 Corinthians 2:14-16, AMP) 2. The bottomless things of God (1 Corinthians 2:9-10, AMP) such as: a. The Word b. Redemption c. Spirit beings 3. The mysteries of the world such as: a. The world of nature b. The world of finance c. The world of art d. The world of music 5

e. The world of politics f. The world of sports g. The world of military strategy 4. The mystery of the future a. He will show you things to come (John 16:13) b. Gods plan for your day: You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. (Psalm 139:16, NLT) c. Gods plan for your destiny: For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome. Then you will call upon Me, and you will come and pray to Me, and I will hear and heed you. Then you will seek Me, inquire for, and require Me [as a vital necessity] and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will release you from captivity and gather you from all the nations and all the places to which I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I caused you to be carried away captive. (Jeremiah 29:11-14, AMP) d. A taste of the world to come (Hebrews 10:1); And not only the creation, but we ourselves too, who have and enjoy the first fruits of the [Holy] Spirit [a foretaste of the blissful things to come] groan inwardly as we wait for the redemption of our bodies [from sensuality and the grave, which will reveal] our adoption (our manifestation as God's sons). (Romans 8:23, AMP) e. My future is not based in (dependent on) politics. Its not based in the stock market. My future is based on my inheritance in Christ Jesus. Praying in the Spirit is a divine secret between God and me. It is my future. It is my heritage. It is my destination. It is the vision of my life being prayed out and given root to before it is even made known to this natural world. ~ Kenneth Copeland 5. Allows you to pray about things you could not know (Romans 8:26-27) a. Events and situations unknown to you b. The hearts and minds of people c. People you know, or dont know, who are in trouble d. Praying in tongues equips us to pray for things no one thinks to pray about or about which no one know to pray. ~ Kenneth E. Hagin
