Intercultural Business Communication

Assessment 1

Reading 1 and Reading 4

World is becoming diverse nowadays. Opening up of national border means no limitation for you to work anywhere in this world. It means managers face more opportunities and challenges in a multicultural environment. The reading by Robbins, Bergman, Stagg, and Coulter (2009) tells us about the importance of cultural diversity and how managers should treat staffs from other countries appropriately. Globalisation is a process of international exchange of world views, ideas, and some cultural views. Many companies are going international because they know that there are plenty of opportunities out there. Managers have to be open-minded to build new relationships with people and appreciate their cultures. Every person has different behaviour, and this is what managers need to realise from multicultural staffs. In this era, managers with a diversity in Geocentric attitudes are successful. He also said, Major issues and decisions are viewed globally by looking for the best approaches and people regardless of origin (Robbins etal., 2009, p. 34). In the fourth reading, the article explains about the variety of different environment and their effectiveness for employees behaviours. Culture is everything that people have, think, and do as members of their society (Ferraro, 2010, p. 28). Culture presents ones identity, which everyone can see. It derives from beliefs, values, attitudes, norms, and rules shared by a society or group (Dwyer, 2009, p. 36). Every person has its own perceptions that come from their cultural standards. Nothing is right or wrong, because every culture has different value, which will impact the intercultural business environment. It is natural for employees to be ethnocentric. But as they work as expatriates, they change their attitudes to polycentric and finally they become geocentric. If an organisation wants to see international, its quite challenging for the new beginner because they have to go through many steps, such as enculturation, acculturation, and cultural relativism. First, is to teach staffs to develop their polycentric attitude, then geocentric attitude, which will be useful for their new business environments. In the process of managing employees that have diverse cultural backgrounds, managers face challenges such as language, nonverbal communication, perception of power, and adapting to new cultural contexts. The Cashless Bank Incorporated case is a common globalisation business example these days. A manager of a company which contains of hundred-different-countries workers should be able to give training to the staff about the whole culture of their host countries. In

this process, the sender and receiver, both have different perceptions. Therefore, it means they have different thinking patterns which will make different perceptions to them. Communication is a main key for a manager to keep in touch with the staffs. Once a manager understands ones culture, they will not misunderstood each other. When we hire people in a higher company, our expectation will become higher as well. Managers should train the new employees patiently until their cultures change to their host countries culture, and they are not allowed to judge or make any bad assumption about their new workers, as whats told in the first two paragraphs above. And the real behaviour will be shown naturally from how they do their works. The first summary paragraph is taken from Robbins, S., Bergman, R., Stagg, I., & Coulter, M. s article with 34 pages length, and the second is Dwyers with 20 pages length. Unexpectedly, both of them were studying in the same university, which is Pearson Education Australia, it is located in a suburb in Sydney called Frenchs Forest. As all of us know, this university has been awarded a number of achievements for their quality of education system, such as Educator Awards, Student Awards, Industry Awards, and so forth. No doubt that their students are prodigious. Both of the articles were published in 2009, which are brand new things to be followed, and its still operated in business environment until nowadays.
