ABSTRACT
Essentially our topic is: Road safety issues of female drivers and problems faced by them during driving In this report we will study most of the problems faced by females specifically of Pakistan and Jordan during driving. Ever since women have stepped on the roads, undoubtedly their femininity is taken as a guarantee of bad driving. It is a stereotyped assumption that a woman can never be a good driver and faces uncountable problems during driving, which she is incapable to deal with. The assumption might be wrong to some extent, but the fact remains that females during driving, in this society, DO face problems. We, therefore, in this report plan to highlight all the problems faced by them. We plan to propose solution for them, plot some rules. Every year, some surveys are made generally, but specifically for women is always overlooked. We shall observe that what exactly are the problems they face, what can be their explanations, what are the measures taken to avoid them. How many people have faced them before, and how did they overcome it. They are as aware as all the men, are enough literate of reading the signs, yet what are the consequences that lead to accidents? The procedure includes survey of the women drivers of two countries, Pakistan and Jordan through filling up of a simple questionnaire. It contains some questions regarding the problems and inconveniences faced by them and what are the possible ways to avoid or solve them in their own perspectives. We, here, shall voice all the concerns regarding them, gather their viewpoints, which are to be valued, and file them in an appropriate manner. The results will be compiled in form of a report. A comparison will be made of the two reports themselves as well as with the past reports issued regarding driving. Most of the problems of female drivers will be highlighted as well as their reasons. Since the society is progressing day by day along with the approach and mindset of the individuals, some variations are also expected. The majority, on the other hand, is likely quote common difficulties with common solutions. The results would be potentially general, comprising of an executive summary of the surveys and a propositional analysis of the results in form of a final report. Some recommendations will also be proposed in the aspect of results.

INTODUCTION
Starting from old days, when in this wide world, most of the Muslim nations were subjected to a cloaked crime, Male dominancy. The women, of course given were given their rights entirely, but there laid certain conventions, going against which, women were not considered appropriate. Not long ago, the women of the society were bound to their doorsteps and thresholds and the one crossing it was commonly looked down upon. Those times women had their goals defined but were limited to their families and homes. But no one, not even our religion, obliges a woman to the boundaries. Hence the view inclines a little to the other side with the advancing technology, increasing awareness and growing needs. Now comes the time when a woman has to stand for herself and her family. As the society progresses, women tend to share the responsibilities with their partners to make luxurious lives easily approachable and economical. Ultimately, they have to step on roads! They have to do it as a part of their day-to-day routine. May it be going to market, office, parlors, or to schools to pick their children up, they regularly get out of their thresholds. They go on roads and they drive. As the times change, the society changes, the conservative assumptions of many minds also change. But there remain certain problems, which the women have to deal with. The problems are never highlighted though, on the very basis of rationality and esteem, both going side by side. Their road safety is a very important issue which unfortunately always remains unnoticed. Now that women have come on roads, it has become a general perception that they get stressed out quickly and the male drivers possess more self-control than female ones. Men comparatively drive fast even on dangerous routes. But this, from no means, ensures their good driving. If we analyze a traffic, we will observe that female drivers are way less in number than males. And according to a report of DAWN News, it was concluded that male drivers have a risk of dying in accidents 77% more than females. This might be due to the rash driving or whatsoever, but the old stereotyped image of women driving terribly has definitely been erased by this. Talking about Pakistan, as it is an Asian country, and women here have the privilege of getting priority, their number on road has started to increase enormously. According to a report in DAWN News, a survey held by Pakistan Today has proved that number of female car drivers in city areas has increased by 60% over the last two decades. The report from City Traffic Police shows that in the first quarter of 2011, 1102 licenses were issued to women. This evidence depicts the freedom given to women in Pakistan unlike some other Islamic countries where driving is banned for women. Recently in KSA, a woman was sent to jail for driving a car. Though she was released shortly, but the act arose much misperception among the minds of people regarding the freedom for women. Contrary to KSA, women can freely drive in Jordan. BPW International, a federation of business and professional women says that half of the population of Jordan is women and out of them 40% drive vehicles. The organization had held the survey in order to educate them regarding the vehicle maintenance skills. Data Source: DAILY (DAWN) BPW International news

GENERAL TRAFFIC SAFETY DISCUSSION

There are some type casted images for a woman driver while she is on road, which become stronger when she encounters any problem. Following are the top ten complaints about women drivers: Lack of concentration on road Confusing the accelerator and brakes Getting close to other vehicles Braking late Sudden braking Carelessness in indicating Stopping in the middle of road Inappropriate variation in speeding of vehicle

DRIVING SURVEYS ACROSS THE WORLD

All across the globe, surveys regarding driving have been conducted on and off. Some of them are mentioned below.

* United States Of America

Report By University Of Michigan A study of 6.3 million accidents was made by University of Michigan, USA. The expected results of these accidents using the General Estimate Data from police-reported crashes, the accidents caused by male drivers on the both sides were supposed to be 36.2%, female to female accidents 15.8% and male to female accidents should have been 48% of the whole. On the contrary, the ratio of male to male crashes was less, being 31.9%. The results concluded that female to female accidents were 20.5%, the value is much higher than expected one. The male to female driver crashes were 47.6%, approximately up to the expectations. According to the poll results, 66.9% people agreed that men are better drivers than women, 20% disagreed where 13.1% said that both are equal. The report states that while driving, that taking turns is often troublesome for women drivers. They are likely to hit by the opposite side while taking turns. The major problem might also be the physical height difference of men and women. Women being shorter, find it difficult to see out of the windows. The problem is being magnified in the modern designed cars, as the belt-lines are getting higher relative to the driver. According to a scientific research, women feel difficulty in perceiving 3D rotating figures than men, hence enabling men to perceive skills and overcome their flaws in a short term. Who Are Better Drivers, Men Or Women? A recent poll conducted in US unveiled that 51% of the women were of the opinion that they drive safely than men, which is likely to be true since men are 3.4 times more vulnerable to fatal driving. The study also shows that women mostly abide by the traffic laws and hence are less vulnerable to accidents. A survey conducted for men showed that only 39% of men claim to drive safely than women. In the year 2009, 11900 male drivers had lost their lives in contrast to 4900 women drivers. In the age of about 16 to 19 years, the death rate of males was 9.2% whereas for females it was 5.3%, for the same age. When it comes to the matter of insurance, women in US get the insurance policy of $698 where men get it for $765. Data Source: CBS News Fatal Accidents In New York The people of New York State are considered to be the worst drivers worldwide. 34% of them fail their driving tests. Amongst them, male drivers are worse. In the year 2011, New York City Pedestrian Safety Study & Action Plan found that 80% of the total crashes leading to serious injuries or killing involved male drivers. In spite of the fact, the GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test found that 27.2% of the people failing the re-tests were women, in contrast to 13.6% males. Data Source: NY DAILY NEWS Women Driving The president of Insurance Institute for highway safety Mister Brian O Neill says that women do not drive at nights, their driving ratio at night times is comparatively less. The reports issued by US Department of Transportation also suggested the same results. The women take their trips on cars usually from 9 am to 7 am and mainly do it for family or personal business. The unemployed women drive less than the women who are employed and have to drive for their work. The department states that the number of employed women driving is approximately 54.3% greater than unemployed women. Data Source: USA Today Reports By Mcguckin & Murakami: Nancy McGuckin and Murakami are the travel behavior analysts. According to them women mostly drive to run their household errands or while going to work. But the fact is quite astonishing that more women are now license holders as compared to men. The gender gap in this regard has reduced to a considerable value. By 2010, 105.7 million females received licenses in contrast to 104.3 million men. Women have also outnumbered men in driving at the age of 45 years and above. Data Source: USA Today & NY Times

Environment Problems While Driving 62% of women and 29% of men worry about driving in abandoned areas. A flat tire or sudden car break down has led to severe situations for 65% of women whereas in contrast only 40% of men think the same. Data Source: MSN Car Point

* United Kingdom
Parking Issues In United Kingdom, a report was issued regarding car parking. According to it, women are better when it comes to parking. A team of NCP (UK) surveyed 25,000 people and found out that although women take more time while parking a car, their car is likely to be parked precisely and in the center. Women take care not to hit other cars when they are too and almost 20% of them agree that they park better than males. Men, on the other hand are quite impatient. The survey showed that women take at the least 21 seconds to park their car and men on the average take 15-16 seconds. Data Source: Time News Feed Car Maintenance A report revealed that more than 12% women drivers never check the oil level of their vehicle in contrast to 8% men. 14% women get their coolant levels checked from garages in contrast to 5% men. 9% women get their washer fluid level checked from garages in contrast to 3% men. 14% women show negligence in checking tire pressure in contrast to 7% men. Data Source: Auto quake Women Driving At night, women drive 28% less than men. Men while driving fast, usually break hard, about 11% more than women. The women during driving also do not usually exceed limits; they do it 12% less than males. Data Source: Times Of India

* India
Road Accidents According to a study till September 15, 2011, only 12 reckless accidents were caused by women in India where number of accidents caused by men was about 724. There were 53 accidents caused by women leading to injuries, and caused by men were 2524 accidents respectively. The ratio of trivial road accidents caused by men to women was 284:4 in the same year. Driving Instructions By Maruti-Suzuki Maruti-Suzuki is a company manufacturing the best selling cars in India. The company has also opened 200 Maruti Driving schools all over the India to train and equip the drivers properly. The good step taken by the company is that it has Hired Female Instructors for Female Learners. The school also teaches on the carrepairing concerns including handling minor hitches and changing the flat tires. They train the learner to drive in every possible weather and road condition including fog, uphill/downhill terrain etc. Data Source: Maruti-Suzuki www.marutisuzuki.com

* China
In a population of about 1,344,130,000 people with approximately 647,000,000 women, the ratio of females driving is comparatively less when it comes to world surveys. Last year Chinese Government had to build special parking places specifically for women. The parking spaces are about 3 feet wider than the rest and are well lit up. They are located near the exits of garages and car park malls to facilitate women and avoid any mishap. The malls in China have had some signs and security monitoring equipment installed to accommodate the womens needs. The statistics from Driving Standards Agency (Britain) state that the number of women failing their driving tests was about 40,000 as compared to men, whose number was as less as up to 18,798. The failure was because they could not get themselves adept in reverse parking. Data Source: NY Daily News

* Canada
The Canadian driving instructors disagree that men drive easily than women. Women might be late learners but they are always willing to take instructions. They are very less impatient than male drivers and have the capability of admitting their lack of skills and improving them. In their opinion, men might be quick learners, they might be technically more efficient, but they always face fatal accidents in a ratio very high than women. A Harris-Decima poll was conducted in Canada questioning about 1000 drivers across the country. It revealed that mostly Canadians agreed that men drive better than women. Amongst them, 36% polled that men were better drivers where 35% didnt answer. 48% men said they were better drivers. Contrarily, 25% women polled for their own gender. Women mostly experience accidents because of slips and breaks whereas men face them due to their risky driving. About 60% of men drive more than women. And amongst them, 70% are likely to encounter mishaps. Some women have taken racing cars as their professions. The report unveils that the female racers are as good as males and only face cultural hurdles while entering into the field. Data Source: The Globe & Mail (Canada)

* Pakistan
Gilani Research Foundation, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International conducted a survey comprising of many important issues. The survey was conducted for 2631 people in February 2011. The sample was selected from rural and urban areas of all the provinces. The major question was whether women drive better than men. 47% of the people, almost half of the Pakistanis differed with the opinion while 22% agreed that women do. 31% gave no response. It is discovered from a detailed study that 51% of males in contrast to 42% of females gave their opinion regarding poor driving of women. Upon asking that which member of the family usually drives the car, 85% polled for male members of family, 5% for servants and 9% polled for women. Among that 9%, only 1% drive the vehicle solely whereas rest of the 8% drive with male members of the family. When they were asked about their opinions, whether women drive properly or improperly, 45% of the sample agreed that women drive properly, 25% were of the opinion that they dont whereas 28% were uncertain about their response. 2% did not respond. FINAL REPORT
REVIEW
The project primarily is about women driving in Pakistan and Jordan and to find out the standards on which it falls. All over the world it is stereotyped that a woman will always drive in a bad manner and can never beat men in the field. The reason is to be found out. The elementary purpose of this report is to enquire the women that what do they exactly think of themselves as drivers. Where do they stand when compared by good drivers in their own perspectives? What is the characterization of a good driver? Being in an Islamic country, the women always get privileges in every aspect, may they be in their homes or on roads, for being a weaker gender. Hence, the viewpoints and approaches of people in Pakistan and Jordan regarding women driving shall vary from rest of the world. The idea of the project was to determine rather conclude solutions from the collective data gathered through surveys.

CONCLUSIONS
All over the world surveys have concluded that men drive better than women. The world is changing but some notions embossed in the minds are difficult to remove. It is commonly said that people believe what they are told. One person finds women driving bad, the idea gets passed on to others and thus the chain continues until people start believing with prejudiced mindsets. The detailed studies on the other hand, have proved that women drive better than men if allowed to do so. The sample audience for the survey contained 127 Pakistani women drivers and 50 Jordanian women drivers. The results showed that 47.24% Pakistani women say that the social environment is favorable for their driving. In contrast 72% Jordanian women find the environment of their country more favorable for driving. Jordan, an Arab country situated in Middle East is supposedly a country of highly literate and educated inhabitants. The trend of learning driving from the institutes in Jordan is also higher than Pakistan. 94% Jordanians and 86.61% Pakistanis believe that all the drivers should be passed out properly from driving institutions. The difference number of people of the two countries disagreeing with the belief is indeed astonishing. 81.99% Pakistanis and 74% Jordanians believe that in the driving institutes, females should be taught by lady instructors. In Pakistan, the step of hiring lady instructors had been initiated a considerable time ago. Approximately 74% Pakistani women say that they drive for domestic purposes, to run their house hold errands whereas 80% of Jordanian women believe the same. 76% Jordanian women believe, amongst which 40% strongly agreed, that females nowadays are also driving for commercial purposes including their business trips. The worst situation a woman can face on the road is encountering any severe accident. A woman, how strong she might be, is undoubtedly a fragile creature. Most women are incapable of dealing with their stresses. According to 70% Pakistanis, women are unable to handle such circumstances. Same is the percent of Jordanian women who agree with the statement. A highway police lady patrol was interviewed. In her opinion, the approach of women is better than men when they come on road. The sole reason is that women learn first and try later. On the other hand, men show negligence in learning. They tend to learn when they are already on the road. She herself is witness on many such cases on the highway. The accident she had tackled during her job, mainly involved male drivers. The women drivers drive swiftly, which is part of their personality. Once they decide to learn it properly, there remains no further need of corrections or improvements. Their experience later counts in making their skills better

RECOMMENDATIONS
The image needs to be erased that women are better in their houses than on roads. Following are some recommendations introducing which we think might be helpful for the traffic control authorities. * If necessary, the criteria of their license awarding age shall be incremented. * Special institutes for teaching driving to women ought to be created. * There should be some road safety policies specifically for women drivers to improve their interactions with driving experts. * Regular sessions should be initiated to test the driving skills of already driving women and they should be graded on the basis. It should be mentioned in their licenses and according to the grades they should be permitted to go on highways or motorways. * If necessary, their speed limits should also be varied according to their grades. * They should be encouraged when they start driving.
