A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This Geography lesson is designed for 4th grade students to learn how to use a compass to follow directions and locate places. This lesson uses resources found on the Internet. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 4th Grade Skill Level: Students at all learning levels Grouping: Whole group discussion, partner work C. Materials: Compass Rose Map of Nevada Social Studies Journals Rulers Quiz A and Quiz B D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G5.4.1 Identify and use intermediate directions on a compass rose to locate places on a map of Nevada.

Student-Friendly Standards I can use a compass rose to follow directions and locate places in Nevada.

E. Procedure: 1. Engage- First I will engage the students by showing them a Compass Rose and asking them what I have in my hand and what is it used for? As a class we will engage in a guided discussion. I will bring up questions like: o o o o What is this? What do we use it for? Have you ever used a Compass Rose? Can you give an example of someone who would use a compass?

2. Next I will go over key vocabulary terms for the lesson the students will be required to write these words in their Social Studies journals. These terms are Cartography, Compass Rose, scale and map key. I will also write on the board the acronym Never, Eat, Soggy, Waffles to help the students remember North, South, East and West.

3. I will then show the students a map of Nevada. We will discuss the symbols and key on the map. I will be sure to discuss the scale of the map. As a class we will measure and calculate miles from one location to another. 4. After the whole group discussion I will explain the partner quiz activity the class will be doing. Each group will be given their own map of Nevada, compass, quiz and ruler. They will answer the questions on their quiz by working together and using their rulers and compass. 5. CLOSURE: After putting all the supplies away we will come back to a whole class discussion. In which I will ask questions like: o o What was the hardest part of the activity? Did you learn anything new?

We will discuss a few of the correct answers as a class, in particular any questions that students had trouble with. In conclusion I will explain to students that it is important to know how to find a location using a compass. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the partner quiz to measure student understanding. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know whether students understand the concepts from the lesson by grading their quizzes. Depending on their grades I will be able to determine whether they understood or not. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part of the lesson will be to teach the students North, South, East and West 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most difficult part will be teaching the students the scale of the map and how to convert it. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I would extend this lesson by giving the students a map of Las Vegas and having them do the same activity but on their own. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?

If a student doesnt grasp the concept I will pair them with a higher-level student. I will also check in on them as they are working on the activity. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I may need to change the work from partner work to group work depending on whether the students understand the material or not. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of writing this lesson was figuring out an extension activity.
