This lesson is designed for 3rd graders to learn about and identify the economic principles and processes that are helpful to E9.3.1 Identify needs as high priority producers and consumers when making wants, and wants as goods, services, good decisions. This lesson uses Charlie or leisure activities. Needs A Cloak by Tomie dePaola. New York: Simon & Schuster,1973. ISBN 0-67166467-0, about a shepherd named Charlie who shears his sheep, cards and spins the wool, weaves and dyes the cloth, and sews the cloth into a beautiful new red cloak.

MONDAY week #1

Pick up uses Charlie Needs A Cloak by Tomie dePaola from library. Make 32 copies of Production Book, Sheep, Production Checklist and Verb Cards

1st of a two day lesson. This lesson uses the book My Rows and Piles of Coins by Tololwa M. Mollel (Clarion Books, a Houghton Mifflin Company imprint, New York: 1999) ISBN 0-395-75186-1; about a Tanzanian boy saves his coins to buy a bicycle so that he can help his parents carry goods to market, but then he discovers that in spite of all he saved he does not have enough money.

TUESDAY week #1

E9.3.1 Identify needs as high priority wants, and wants as goods, services, or leisure activities. E9.3.2 Give examples of prices consumers have paid when buying goods and services.

Locate My Rows and Piles of Coins by Tololwa M. Mollel. Buy a large bag of individually wrapped candy from Sams. Club.

Make 32 copies of Decision Tree and E9.3.3 Give examples of prices set by Making Economic Choices with businesses for selling goods and Money services. E9.3.1 Identify needs as high priority wants, and wants as goods, services, or leisure activities. E9.3.2 Give examples of prices consumers have paid when buying goods and services. E9.3.3 Give examples of prices set by businesses for selling goods and services.

2nd day of lesson using the book My Rows and Piles of Coins by Tololwa M. Notes Locate Managing Your Money: Be a Wise Consumer by Barbara Brooks. Make 32 copies of Resource Sheet 4 ( cut apart so that each group of 3 4 students has one card)

MONDAY week #2

Two 45-50 minute lessons are suggested. The book Managing Your Money: Be a Wise Consumer by Barbara Brooks Simons will be used where financial literacy is discussed through the topics of making wise financial decisions and consumer awareness.

E10.3.2 Define banking terms, including saving, interest, and borrowing E10.3.3 Identify reasons people use banks. E11.3.1 Identify and explain what business owners do.

TUESDAY week #2

The 2nd of two 45-50 minute lesson. The book Managing Your Money: Be a Wise Consumer by Barbara Brooks Simons will be used when financial literacy is discussed through the topics of making wise financial decisions and consumer awareness.

E10.3.2 Define banking terms, including saving, interest, and borrowing. E10.3.3 Identify reasons people use banks. E11.3.1 Identify and explain what business owners do.

This lesson is designed for 3rd graders where financial literacy is discussed through the topics of using money, earning money, spending and saving money, and making good decisions about money. Managing Your Money: Spend or Save? by Barbara Brooks Simons will be used during this lesson.

E11.3.2 Identify classroom resources that are limited and must be shared. E12.3.1 Differentiate between barter and monetary trade

Pick up Corduroy by Don Freeman from library. Make 32 copies of resource 1 and 2.
