Edit- May 2013 Ek tha Forbesganj Road Once upon a time, there was a road in a town named Forbesganj. Poor peasants of the town used a little road to reach to their destination . One day they found that the road , that was being used by them since ages, was gone. That thoroughfare was important for them, for their daily commuting. The Bihar Government had sold the land through which that path passed, to a private party and it had stopped people from using that utility. The corporate greed , hand in glove with the government was treating poor peasants of the town contemptuously. When the people decided to stage a peaceful protest for their right to road, little did they know that , there will be firing , murders, injuries and FIRs, [even after their deaths]. The mayhem didnt just stop at that, a police jawan Sunil Kumar Yadav played Tandav and danced on one of the dead bodies, all this was captured on live camera. Two years later the news came that the police has registered cases against the 56 protesters including the dead ones. This, they say, would strengthen the case of the police as it could then claim that the protesters were rioting and hence police had to kill them. Mr. Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister, Bihar with prime ministerial ambitions, keeps attacking another chief minister with the same ambition Mr. Narendra Modi for being non secular. Real secularism is treating people be they of any hue, with equality respect and justice. Now, Nitish Babu must prove himself to be a real secular and give fair and speedy justice to Forbesganj. His anti Modi tirade will be taken seriously only if he gives justice to those who have been wronged brutally. We are fed up now of empty rhetoric. P.S: Forbesganj had taken its name from an East India Company British Official Mr.Alexander John Forbes[1749-1819]. His 52000 manuscript notes on natural history archaeological history and religious and social history of India can be found in his Oriental Memoirs.

Arthur Ashe, the legendary Wimbledon player was dying of CANCER. From world over, he received letters from his fans, one of which conveyed: "Why does GOD have to select you for such a bad disease" ? To this Arthur Ashe replied: The world over -5 crore children start playing tennis, 50 lakh learn to play tennis, 5 lakh learn professional tennis, 50,000 come to the circuit, 5000 reach the grand slam, 50 reach Wimbeldon, 4 to semi final, 2 to the finals, When I WAS HOLDING A CUP I NEVER ASKED GOD "Why me?". And today in pain I should not be asking GOD "Why me?" Happiness keeps you Sweet, Trials keep you Strong, Sorrow keeps you Human, Failure Keeps you Humble, Success keeps you Glowing, But ONLY GOD Keeps you Going..... THIS IS LIFE! ENJOY IT!!

Ham muslim har mamle apr fatwa dene lagte hain, yah galat he yah sahi he, bina haqiqat ko jane hue. Kya ek bare kam ki khatir chhoti galti karna hikmat nahi, lekin aam muslim to chhoti galti par hi itni hay tauba kar dete hain ke koi azeem kam ki khatir aisa kam karne ki jurrat nahi karta, awam ko bilkul sat-hi batayn pasand aati hain, aur jinko awam ki hamdardi chahie wah isi dagar par chalne ko tarjih deta he. 50 sal pahle bhi muslim ko sarkari na insafi ki shikayat thi aur aaj bhi he, na insafi ki nauyiat badal gayi, kabhi fasad hua karta tha ab fasad ke sath aatankwad ken am par kisi ko bhi pakra jane laga, lekin aaj tak masle ko hal karne ki hikmat amli nahi badly muslims ki. Democracy is a FAILED system. Suppose, there are 51% criminals and despotic people; and 49% intelligent and wise people. According to Democracy, 51% should be given preference and CRIME shall rule the country. Better to avoid it and let not help those who want to bring it forcefully under different pretexts, though their slogans look appealing and attractive.

I think that Islam is not a religion of war and violence. The verses about Jihad don't convey the general command of Islam. These verses about Jihad (Qital) relate in a restrictive sense to those who have attacked the Muslims. These are related to a particular situation. I happened to pass through Old City of Hyderabad last night past 12 am. On every nook and corner of Old City, I saw youth seated wasting time on unproductive things. I went through EdiBazar, Rein Bazar, Yakutpura and BadaBazar; all I could see was group of youth of ages around 16 to 30, chatting about girls, some hooked on phones probably talking to their girlfriends. Some backbiting and some laughing so louder that the laugh could be heard at a far distance. I wonder what their parents would be doing, or are they just reluctant about their sons' future? I seriously wondered, if these youth utilize their skills in productive methods, they can do wonders, but alas insects of laziness, stupidity and unhealthy attitude have bitten them.

DAWAA: 24X7
M.A. Haque We regularly come across the term Daawaa. In Urdu the same is written and pronounced as Daawat. In English it would mean Invitation. Muslims are supposed to invite others towards Islam. That is one of the duties of every Muslim. Important reason is that after Prophet (SAW) no other prophet will come till the Day of Judgment. Hence, Muslims have to perform the duty to spread the message of Islam on the earth. Large numbers of people are of the opinion that for performing the task of Daawaa one must leave the home, the family and travel to different places and only then they can invite people towards Islam. May be it is one way to perform the duty. The difficulty is that not everyone can do that. They have to take care of the family and also, they have to perform their duties to earn their livings. Such persons carry the feeling that they are not performing an important duty assigned by Allah. So they also feel guilty at times. I am of the opinion that for performing Daawaa it is not essential to leave the home and travel to some other place. In fact, I feel it is difficult that way as there are barriers of language, lifestyle etc. I am of the opinion that Daawaa can be performed 24X7 by any Muslim if the person takes care of his/her responsibilities properly. For example, we are supposed to be honest in our dealings, we are supposed not to tell lies, we are not supposed to indulge in back-biting, we are not supposed to make irresponsible statements about anyone, especially women in the matters of their characters etc. But the problem is that we are not careful in our daily life. We do everything which we are not supposed to and we are not honest in our affairs. Obviously, non-Muslims are unable to observe any difference between us, the Muslims and others. In fact large numbers of non-Muslims are better than Muslims in these matters. Under the circumstances, there is no reason that the non-Muslims will be attracted towards Islam. In fact they get the wrong impression that Muslims are not at all different from others. In India there is one more issue. In most places Muslims have almost nil interaction with non-Muslims. Muslims are constantly in search of avenues to live away from non-Muslims. They give different excuses for that. One common excuse is that they want to live in places where there is Muslim lifestyle. I do not think there is anything like Muslim lifestyle. If filth and garbage spread around, narrow lanes, encroachments, no parks and open spaces, children playing in filth, shops selling kabaab and roti or qurmaa at every ten metres may be considered Muslim lifestyle, then I am unable to agree to the idea. Another reason forwarded occasionally is that such areas are safe. There too I am unable to agree. If Allah has ordained something to happen to me or my family, nothing can stop that. There is nothing safe or unsafe. Another issue is that how much time we spend in our homes? We have to travel, we have to attend to our duties, we have to visit markets etc. How can we ensure safety in those areas by living in so called Muslim localities. The result of this kind of isolation is that non-Muslims have no Bakhabar interaction with Muslims. In the absence of the interaction, they conclude from secondary sources about Muslims and also about Islam. Most of the time their conclusions are 100% wrong and on false propaganda. But we cannot blame them for that. We are not providing them the correct information as we try to isolate ourselves more and more. If we have regular interaction with them and we present the true Islam to them through our dealings, our lifestyle, our behavior etc., they will get the message easily. My personal experience is that if we interact with them and we maintain minimum standard of honesty, fairdealing etc., people do take notice and quite frequently they ask why we are different. That is the opportunity when we can tell them that we are different because we are Muslims. On various counts there are misconceptions about Islam among the non-Muslims. For example about animal sacrifice, number of wives, number of children, azaan, fasting (saum), ribaa etc. they have totally negative perceptions. If we interact with them and bring before them the true picture, they get convinced. But that is possible only if we have interaction with them and that too not formal but informal and friendly. Situation must be such that they should have no hesitation in asking questions and we must provide them convincing and logical answers. I regularly discuss issues related to Islam with my non-Muslim friends and I have never found them to be impolite. At times it has happened so that they have not accepted freely that they were convinced but they stopped forwarding counterarguments. Certainly, that should be considered the first step towards success. At least there is some change in their attitude. I do not mean that they will embrace Islam but their attitude towards Islam and also Muslims will change for better. I shall like to finish this matter by giving two very recent examples. I regularly exchange mails with my non-Muslim friends and their number exceeds hundred. I regularly discuss social issues and also religious issues through the mails. Two days back a friend of mine, a very senior officer in a company in Mumbai sent me a set of questions. One question was related to azaan. I am copying the question and my answer below. You may enjoy it. Deliberately I did not tell him that singing is not permitted in Islam as he finds lot of Muslims singing and also doing Qawwaali etc. He could get confused. I forwarded an acceptable argument. Friends email: A few questions that have been troubling me. You may have wondered about them too. Perhaps you can tell me the answers. 1. Why do temples have no congregational space? (Unlike the worshipper in church, mosque and gurdwara, why does the Hindu pray alone? Will changing the architecture introduce social contract?) 2. Would it be heretical if a muezzin were trained to sing his azan in the time-appropriate raga? (For instance, if he could sing in Bhairav for the fajr namaz before dawn.) My replies: Thanks. Good ones. In the first place, I have seen so many temples with congregational halls. People sit there and do Bhajan Keertan
11
DAWAA: 24X7
etc. As far as the azaan (calls for prayers at different times) called by the muezzin is concerned, it has to be short. It is only to call people for prayer and not for recreational purpose. Hence, it would not be appropriate to make it raaga based. Haque
Another friend of mine who has strong belief in spirituality sent me an email. I am copying here his emails and my replies. His mail: Saints emerge from the ocean of Nam.... They assume the human form because man can have only another man as his teacher. Nobody has seen gods and goddesses. Nor does anybody know the form of God. Unless a man who is like ourselves teaches us, we cannot understand anything about the Lord. My reply: Thanks. A similar question was raised when Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was given the prophet-hood. People of Mekka objected why a man like them was made a prophet and not some angel. Then Allah revealed in Qur'an that His message had to be delivered to humans and it could be done only by a human not by angels or anything else. It was not possible for humans to interact with angels. That is why all the prophets right from Adam to Muhammad (SAW) were only humans. If you are interested I can send the reference in Qur'an on the subject. M.A. Haque His reply: Dear Mr. Haque Definitely, I would like to be enlightened. Thanks and regards, My reply: There are several verses in Qur'an on the subject. I am giving the English meaning for three of them below: A. What kept men back from belief when Guidance came to them, was nothing but this: they said, Has Allah sent a man (like us) to be (His) Messenger? Say, If there were settled, on earth, angels walking about in peace and quiet, We should certainly have sent them down from the heavens an angel for messenger. (Quran: 17: 94 & 95) B. And the messengers whom We sent before thee were all men who ate food and walked through the markets. (Quran: 25: 20). Other verses on the same subject are: Qur'an: 14: 10 & 11; 16: 43; 21: 7 & 8; 25: 7. The first no. is of the Surah (chapter) and the next no. is of the concerned verse/s. His acknowledgement (last mail): THANKS If need be I will take the liberty to refer you ********** Note: Views expressed above are my personal. Brothers and sisters may have disagreement. They are free to have their own views/opinions.

L i v i n g w i t h O t h e r s : B i o d i v e r s i t y a r o u n d u s
The year 2010 was declared by the UN as the Year of Biodiversity. Reason was that the Earths biodiversity is being eroded very fast. With every passing day some organisms disappear from the Earth. No doubt, disappearance of species has been going on since life originated on the Earth. But during last few centuries the rate has multiplied due to the Human Factor. We are forcing the living organisms to extinction. The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) has compiled the Red Data Book which is updated regularly. The Red Data Book lists over 40,000 species of animals and plants which are under threat to extinction. The point of concern is that presently the world is losing species at up to 10,000 times the natural rate of extinction. This rate is alarming as it is more than what resulted in the extinction of dinosaurs about 65 million years ago. According to the Global Biodiversity Assessment the extinction of species since the year 1600 has occurred at 50 to 100 times the average natural estimated rate. It is expected to rise to 1000 to 10000 times the natural rate in near future. Obviously, it will be catastrophic. The biodiversity present around us will be eroded fast and we very well know that a species once extinct never comes back. The issue is that people talk about biodiversity but most of them do not understand what biodiversity is. If we look around us we find that large variety of plants, animals, microorganisms exist. But microorganisms are too small to be visible to the naked eye. These can be seen only through microscopes. But their existence is evident. For example, if we leave the milk uncared, it gets spoiled on account of certain bacteria growing in the milk. Similarly, when we prepare curd or yoghurt, we add some curd or yoghurt to the milk and leave it. Bacteria present in the added material, which are invisible to the naked eye, multiply and the entire milk gets converted into curd or yoghurt. Similarly, fermentation of molasses or sugar syrup produces alcohol. Yeast, a microscopic fungus, is responsible. Palm tree sap which collects during the night and is taken out in the morning is sweet. During night the temperature is low and the yeast cells are unable to do fermentation. Sap, which collects during the day is not sweet. It contains high percentage of alcohol. It is used for intoxication and is called toddy. During the day the temperature rises and the yeast cells become active. Sugar present in the sap converts into alcohol. But the yeast cells are not visible to the naked eye. Same yeast causes fermentation in dough which results in fluffiness of breads. As these organisms grow better in warmer conditions, the activity is faster in summer as compared to winter. Several types of diseases and infections are also caused by the microorganisms. This is the reason that we only see the symptoms and not the causal organisms. One common example is tuberculosis (TB). Other common examples are diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, malaria etc. Biodiversity is a big asset for India. But large numbers of Indian species are listed in the Red Data Book. They may become extinct any time. The issue of concern is that unexpected species are under severe threat. One example which was in limelight recently is the Indian Whiterumped Vulture. There was no obvious reason for the threat. Later it was found that the main factor has been the use of veterinary drug Dicofenac. The chemical accumulates in the body of domestic animals. When they die and the carcass is left for scavenging, the vultures feed upon them. The chemical accumulates in the vultures body and results in kidney failure leading to their death. The other well known example is of the Great Indian Bustard. This bird is found in a restricted area in Gujarat and Rajasthan. During the last few decades the population of this bird has been falling on account of habitat destruction, associated with occasional hunting. Indian Cheetah became extinct in the middle of the last century. We are aware about the Asiatic lion which used to roam from Greece to India till about few centuries back. Now, it is restricted to a small area in Gujarat. That too could be possible because the Nawaab of Junagarh protected the then remaining few lions. Himalayan quail is totally extinct, last seen in 1876. Its habitat was in the foothills of the western Himalayas. P i n k headed duck is also considered extinct. The last duck was killed in north Bihar. Asiatic two horned rhino which was found earlier is no more in In dia an d Bangladesh . Now there are reports o f increased poaching of leopards in t h e country. During 2009 as many as 290 leopards were killed in the country. Wildlife enthusiasts are of the view that about 500 animals are killed annually. Reason is that leopard body parts are suitable substitute for tiger body parts for use in traditional medicines. Also, leopard skin fetches good price. Taking into account the importance of biodiversity at global level and more so for India, sometime back the Publications Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India asked me to write a book on Biodiversity. Their aim was to bring a book on this important subject, which could be useful for general readers as well as for those who had knowledge on the subject. Certainly, it was a challenge for me as the subject was of technical/scientific nature. To make it comprehensible for all could be difficult. However, I started working on the project and to my delight the book was approved by the Publications Division. It is now published. Title of the Book is: Living with Others, Biodiversity around us. The book is available from the Sales Centres of the Publication Division. Also, the Publications Division has Agents in different cities and towns. The list is available on their website. Price of the book is Rs. 190/-.

Bihar Anjumans Patna chapter appeals to HRD minister to revoke the decision to cancel the exam centre at Darbhanga (Bihar) for admissions to MANUU Polytechnic
Respected Dr. M. Mangapati Pallam Raju Minister of Human Resource Development Government of India , New Delhi. Subject: Cancellation of exam centre at Darbhanga (Bihar) for admission to MANUU Polytechnic Sir, With due regards, we like to bring forth some facts for your kind consideration: (1): Sachar Committee Report & Status of Follow up Action (as on 31.01.2013) reads as: The Government of India took several decisions on the recommendations of the Sachar Committee and a statement in this regard was laid in both Houses of Parliament on 31.8.2007. Ministry/Department-wise status of follow up action on implementation of recommendations of Sachar Committee are as under: Ministry of Human Resource Development: A multi-pronged strategy to address the educational backwardness of the Muslim community, as brought out by the Sachar Committee, has been adopted. With a view to ensure educational empowerment of minorities, the Government has initiated several measures as given below:(d) Under the sub-Mission on polytechnics, financial assistance is provided to the States/UTs for setting up of polytechnics in un-served and under-served districts. 57 districts out of 90 minority concentration districts are eligible for consideration under the scheme. So far an amount of Rs. 291.06 crore has been released as initial grants for setting up of polytechnics in 49 out of 57 Districts. (2): Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) Hyderabad has established three Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and three Polytechnic Colleges in Hyderabad Bangalore and Dharbanga respectively. (3): But, the other side of the story as reported in news papers says that Polytechnic pass outs of the first batch (20008-2011) from Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad have been denied admission (lateral entry) into B.Tech Courses, Hyderabad despite clearing the E-CET 2011. The reason stated by them is that the Polytechnic of MANUU is not recognized by AICTE. (4): Secondly, the Vice Chancellor of MANNU, Hyderabad has cancelled recently the entrance exam centre of Darbhanga (Bihar) for admission to MANNU Polytechnic and directed all aspirants to come to Hyderabad for appearing at the entrance exam as well as for counseling. (5): Sir, we run a charitable academic organization BIHAR ANJUMAN in twenty four districts of Bihar and Jharkhand with a capacity of hundred downtrodden children in each district ranging from class-viii to class-x. Some of these non-resourceful students used to appear at the Entrance Exam centre at Darbhanga itself. By the grace of God, our twenty nine students are now getting education at MANNU Polytechnic. But this year, their dreams have been shattered. These un-served children of our society have been thrown from pillars to post. BIHAR ANJUMAN and poor parents are not in a position to send their children to Hyderabad for appearing in the entrance exam. The approval ofDarbhanga and Banglore polytechnic has been lying in the file of the Vice Chancellor, MANNU and All India Council of Technical Education(AICTE) since 2008.

Anti-social elements force Rahbar Coaching Centre, Dhanbad @ Baghakuri, Kumardhubi, to shift from its own premises to the home of Janab Muhammad Talha Sb. Janab Engineer Shahid Amin Sb, the founder of RCC Dhanbad reported, At Baghakuri where we were running the coaching centre we have got some trouble from unsocial elements. They forced us to pay rent for the building to the masjid committee. Although the people of Baghakuri had made a firm commitment neither to disturb the coaching centre nor to charge any rent. It may be recalled that we transformed the dilapidated building into functional classrooms at our own cost, based upon this commitment. We tried to convince them much but the situation was not in our favour. So we have shifted the coaching to the house of Jb. Muhammad Talha Sb. May Allah SWT accept his kind deed from all of us, and bless the students of this locality with greatest possible success. Alhamdulillah, the coaching centre is running with renewed spirit. The house of Jb. Muahmmad Talha Sb is about 1/2 Km away from the previous location. Admission to class VIII is going on. In sha Allah, the coaching center will bring very positive changes in our society.

in the now. 14. Give up attachment. This is a concept that, for most of us, is so hard to grasp and I have to tell you that it was for me too (it still is), but it's not impossible. You get better and better at it with time and practice. The moment you detach yourself from all things (and that doesn't mean you give up your love for them because love and attachment have nothing to do with one another. Attachment comes from a place of fear, while love well, real love is pure, kind, and selfless; where there is love there can't be fear, and because of that, attachment and love cannot co-exist) you become so peaceful, so tolerant, so kind, and so serene. You will get to a place where you will be able to understand all things without even trying. A state beyond words 15. Give up living your life to other people's expectations. Way too many people are living a life that is not theirs to live. They live their lives according to what others think is best for them; they live their lives according to what their parents think is best for them; to what their friends, their enemies and their teachers, their government and the media think is best for them. They ignore their inner voice, that inner calling. They are so busy with pleasing everybody, with living up to other people's expectations, that they lose control over their lives. They forget what makes them happy, what they want, what they need and eventually, they forget about themselves. You have one life this one right now you must live it, own it, and especially don't let other people's opinions distract you from your path. Preliminary tests indicate book is genuine By Habib Toumi, Bureau Chief Aden Gulf News Oldest Quran found in Yemen, man claims Preliminary tests indicate book is genuine By Habib Toumi, Bureau Chief, Gulf News, Yemen, Published: 15:15 October 11, 2012 Image Credit: Courtesy: Aden Gulf News The Quran thought to date from 815AD, found in a mountain cave near Dhale, Yemen Manama: A Yemeni young man has claimed to have found the oldest surviving manuscript of the Holy Quran. The book venerated by Muslims was found inside a leather cover in a cave in the mountains south of the city of Dhale in the southern part of the country, Yemeni Arabic news site Aden Gulf News reported on Wednesday. The words This manuscript was handwritten in 200 AH (815 AD) were inscribed on the first page, and preliminary tests have indicated that the copy was genuine, making it the oldest in existence. According to the site, the Arabic letters did not have the dots that were introduced at a later stage in the Arabic alphabet to distinguish similar looking letters. The young man, who was not identified, has reportedly been offered large sums of money for the manuscript, including a YR 12 million (Dh205,682) offer, but he has refused to give it away, preferring instead to keep it, relatives said. He said that he was able to reach the mountain cave by climbing down using a rope, insisting that it was the only way to reach it. The news site said that the young man also found next to the Quran manuscript a sword believed to have belonged to Ali Bin Abi Talib, the fourth Caliph and son-in-law of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). Some history accounts say that the sword Dhu Al Faqqar was offered by Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) to Ali. Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) lived between AD570 and 632 and the Holy Quran was revealed between 610 and 632.

Mumbai gets its first Shariah court to settle civil, marital disputes
Mohammed Wajihuddin MUMBAI: The city is set to get its first Darul Qaza or Shariah court to settle civil and marital disputes in the Muslim community. The court, set up by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, will be inaugurated on Monday at Anjuman-i-Islam, near CST, and will serve to fill a long-felt need of the community. Shariah courts already function at many places in the country, such as Hyderabad, Patna and Malegaon. Here qazis appointed by the AIMPLB hear the community's various disputes, barring criminal cases, and deliver judgements. "This court will function to settle mainly family disputes pertaining to marriage, divorce and inheritance. Marriage disputes will be settled quickly and the couples will be told to either reconcile or separate if reconciliation is not possible. It will save the community much time and money as fighting cases in civil courts is expensive and time-consuming," said AIMPLB secretary Maulana Wali Rahmani. For a dispute to be heard by a Shariah court, both the parties in the dispute will have to approach the court. If one of the parties has approached a civil court, then it will have to withdraw the case for the Shariah court to accept the matter. Rahmani said Shariah courts do not compete with the civil courts. "On the contrary, Shariah courts will lower the burden of the civil courts where thousands of cases are pending and the judges are overworked," he said. Senior advocate and head of AIMPLB's legal cellYusuf Muchalla called the city's Shariah court a "significant alternative dispute settlement mechanism". "This court will decide within the framework of Muslim personal laws and mainly deal with matrimonial disputes. This is a kind of domestic tribunal set up by the Muslim community." He added that district and high courts in Bihar, Jharkhand, Bengal and Orissa have upheld several decisions given by the Shariah courts established by the Imarat-e-Shariah (House of Shariah) headquartered in Patna. Muchalla maintained that the Shariah courts were well within the law of the land. Grave-worship
One of the forms of shirk which is particularly widespread in Muslim countries is: graveworship, the belief that dead awliyaa (saints) can fulfil ones needs or help at times of distress, and calling upon them for aid. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him . . . [al-Israa 17:23] Similarly, they call upon dead Prophets, righteous people and others to intercede for them or to rescue them from some calamity, but Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): Is not He (better than your g o d s ) W h o responds to the distressed one, when he calls Him, and W h o removes the evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth, generations after generations? Is there any ilaah (god) with Allaah? . . . [al-Naml 27:62] The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Whoever dies calling on someone else as a rival to Allaah, will enter Hell. (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 8/176). Some of them shave their heads at the graves, and some have books with titles like Manaasik Hajj al-Mashaahid (The Rituals of Pilgrimage to Shrines), mashaahid or shrines referring to graves or tombs of awliyaa. Some of them believe that the awliyaa are running the affairs of the universe and that they have the power to benefit or harm. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): And if Allaah touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is no one who can repel His Favour . . . [Yoonus 10:107] It is also shirk to make a vow to any other than Allaah, as is done by those who vow to bring candles or lights for the occupants of the graves. Allah Azza wa jal has prohibited the Jannah for the Mushrik! See Quran:5/72
Some of them have adopted the habit of mentioning the name of a shaykh or wali (saint) when they stand up, or sit down, or stumble, or encounter problems or distress, so they might say O Muhammad! or O Ali! or O Husayn! or O Badawi! or O Jeelaani! or O Shaadhili! or O Rifaai! - or they may call upon al-Aydaroos or Sayyidah Zaynab or Ibn Alwaan. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): Verily those whom you call upon besides Allaah are slaves like you . . . [al-Araf 7:194]
Some of those who worship graves walk around them as if in Tawaaf, and acknowledge their corners, or touch them, kiss them, wipe their faces with their dust, prostrate towards them when they see them, or stand before them in fear and humility, praying for whatever they need of healing from some disease, or for a child, or for help with some difficulty. Sometimes they call upon the occupant of the grave, saying O my master, I have come to you from far away, so do not let me down.
But Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allaah such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them? [al-Ahqaaf 46:5]
