Americas Biggest Week all about bird migration

BY MARK GRIFFIN PRESS CONTRIBUTING WRITER Thousands of birding enthusiasts will flock to Northwest Ohio on May 3-12 for the fourth annual The Biggest Week in American Birding event. The three previous Biggest Week events drew more people than the one before it, and this years festival will draw birders not only nationally but from Panama, Ecuador, Guatemala, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan and China. Kim Kaufman, executive director of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory in Oak Harbor, said thats no accident. We have put tremendous effort into marketing this area and using a lot of partnerships, like Birds and Bloom magazine, Bird Watching magazine, Bird Watchers Digest and Audubon Magazine, she said. Last year, we were featured in Spirit Magazine, which is the in-flight magazine for Southwest Airlines. Nationally and internationally, this festival is becoming one of the top birding festivals in the country. Certainly, word of mouth is a component, but our (BSBO) marketing effort has been reaching a lot of people. Were including a strong tourism component into our mission. Kaufman said this years theme is Birding Is For Everyone, and the event will again include birding workshops and bus trips to various birding locations in Ohio and Michigan. We had just under 64,000 people here between the end of April and the middle of May last year, Kaufman said. I expect that number to continue to increase every year, because it has been. Our marketing efforts are reaching more and more people. Black Swamp added the new website (www.biggestweekinamericanbirding.com) this year. We wanted something fresh and new. Were adding new events and activities that outgrew the reach of the old website. This allows the new website to be treated almost like a blog, where we can add content in a much more fluid way. The festival headquarters will be Maumee Bay Lodge and Conference Center, but there will be a lot going on at BSBO, Kaufman said. Bus trips are taking people into four counties Lucas, Ottawa, Erie and Sandusky, she said. Were also running some trips into Michigan this year, to Point Mouillee State Game Area in Monroe County. All of our bus trips leave out of Maumee Bay and go out to birding areas. Point Mouillee has always been really good for shorebirds and waterfowl. Its an interesting place and not that far to take people. The goal of each The Biggest Week festival is to raise awareness and appreciation for birds and habitat conservation. In 2012, The Biggest Week helped raise more than $25,000 for local bird research, education and conservation in Northwest Ohio. The festival also raised funds to purchase 200 copies of Guia de campo a las aves de Norteamerica, Spanish-language bird guide that serves as a valuable tool for diversity outreach programs in the desert Southwest and northern Mexico. Proceeds from the 2012 Biggest Week also provided funding to help build a new shorebird viewing platform on the Boss Unit of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, and continued development of the new Crane Creek Estuary Trail near the Magee Marsh Boardwalk. Hundreds of different kinds of birds will be on display during The Biggest Week, but the stars of the annual spring get-together in this part of the state are the warblers. This is one of the best places in the world to see so many warblers in one place, Kaufman said. Last year birders saw 222 (bird) species, including 37 warbler species. Kaufman added that BSBO is really pumping up our efforts to get local people to come out and try birding. Several workshops have been set up to teach people about bird watching. This festival is so unique, she said. We get birders from all ages, all walks of life. This is a massive influx of people and birds coming together in Northwest Ohio. Were doing some Urban Bird Walks with Toledo Metroparks. Well visit Toledo Metroparks and try to get people out birding. The Metroparks walks are scheduled to be led by two African-American birders, Doug Gray and Dr. Drew Lanham. They are working to encourage people of color to go birding and will host speaking engagements and Urban Birding Walks during The Biggest Week. Kaufman stressed that, yes, The Biggest Week in American Birding is about birds and bird watching, but there is a more all-consuming effort each year the festival is held here. We want people to come here and have a good time, Kaufman said. Its such a huge economic boost for the region, but we hope it helps people become much more invested in protecting the habitat that brings the birds here. If we dont conserve the habitat, the birds arent going to come and the birders arent going to come. ODNR anticipates good fishing at Lake Erie in 2013

Lake Erie anglers should enjoy diverse fishing opportunities in 2013, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). When you consider the mix of species and sizes that are seasonally available to Ohio anglers, we are optimistic about the fishing prospects this year, said Jeff Tyson, Lake Erie fisheries program manager for the ODNR Division of Wildlife. Weather is always a wild card at Lake Erie, but if conditions are similar to those in 2012, anglers should have excellent seasonal opportunities this year to catch walleye, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, white bass and steelhead. Lake Erie walleye and yellow perch fisheries are managed through an interagency quota system that involves Ontario, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio jurisdictions. Each jurisdiction regulates their catches to comply with quotas and minimize the risk of over-fishing these species. Quotas for the upcoming fishing season are determined through consensus agreement by these jurisdictions through the Lake Erie Committee of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, which were recently announced for 2013. The walleye daily bag limit is four, and the yellow perch daily bag limit is 30 per angler in Ohio waters until April 30. The daily bag limit will be six walleye from May 1 through Feb. 28, 2014. From March 1, 2014, through April 30, 2014, the daily walleye bag limit will be four. A 15-inch minimum size limit is in effect during the entire season for

Students from Hocking College with their fish walleye. The yellow perch daily bag limit is 30 from May 1 through April 30, 2014, with no minimum size limit. Walleye Ohio walleye anglers in 2013 will catch fish mostly from the 2010, 2009, 2007 and 2003 hatches. Walleye from the 2011 hatch continue to show good growth based on 2012 fall surveys and many individuals will be near or over the 15-inch minimum size limit during the 2013 fishing season. Walleye from the moderate 2010 hatch will range from 17-22 inches, while walleye from the 2007 hatch will range from 18-25 inches. The 2003 and 2007 hatches are likely to carry most of the Central Basin fisheries. These walleye will complement the larger 22- to 30-inch fish from the strong 2003 hatch. Large walleye from strong hatches in the mid-1990s will provide Fish Ohio opportunities (greater than 28 inches).

Yellow Perch Expect good perch fishing in 2013, with the largest fish in the eastern areas of the Central Basin. Perch anglers should encounter fish ranging from 7- to 13-inches from the 2011 through 2007 hatches in this years fishery, with major contributions from the 2007 and 2008 year classes. Fish from the large 2003 year class are still present, particularly in the central basin, and will provide some of this years trophy perch opportunities. Donna Kelley, 78, of Catawba Island passed away peacefully with family on Tuesday, April 23,. She was born on September 7, 1934, in Canton, SD, to Gerritt and Frieda (Johnson) Vugteveen. On August 8, 1959 in Minneapolis, MN, she married John J. Kelley, and he preceded her in death on November 30, 2004. Donna previously worked for more than 20 years as the office manager for Drs. George Optometrists in Port Clinton, starting in 1974. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Port Clinton and a longtime choir member. Donna also was a member of the Port Clinton Yacht Club, Catawba Island Club, CIC Golferettes, Port Clinton Swim Boosters & Swim Club, and, for more than 40 years she volunteered for the Magruder Hospital Auxiliary, at times serving as chairwoman for Charity Ball and as the corporate fundraiser. Nothing was more satisfying to Donna than striving for a hole-in-one (which she got), a great hand in bridge, a sail (or race) on the family boat and, most importantly, anything to do with her grandchildren. Donna is survived by her sons: Mark (Lisa) Kelley of Catawba Island and Kevin Kelley of Rocky River, OH, grandchildren: Grace, Cara, Katie, Clare, Teagan, and Isaac, stepmother: Joy Vugteveen (105 years old) of Rochester, MN, sisters: Mary Halverson of Rochester, MN, and Carol (Leon) Schrage of Iowa City, IA, and numerous nieces and

Clean up Oak Harbor

The Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce Village Wide Cleanup was held on Saturday April 27th, 2013. We had over 50 volunteers come out to help clean up the downtown area, and we would like to recognize the following groups for their commitment: Oak Harbor Apple Festival Royalty Court, 5th, 6th, & 7th grade Middle School Students, Oak Harbor High School Baseball Team & the Oak Harbor High School Football Team. We would also like to thank Community Markets for the use of their dumpsters, The Village of Oak Harbor for donating trash bags, and National Bank of Ohio for donating gloves for the event. Nearly of a dumpster was filled on Saturday morning, which is trash that is no longer on our streets. Everyone needs to do their part to help keep our small town beautiful. GPAAC events
As this year marks an exciting time for Port Clinton and Ottawa County, so to it is for the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council (GPAAC). With the summer season just around the corner, people will soon be making their way back to our area for the enjoyment brought by Lake Erie, the islands, boating, fishing, camping or otherwise simply the thought of getting away. With all the upcoming events planned around the Battle of Lake Erie bicentennial celebration, we may very well see the greatest influx of tourism in our lifetime. In its sixth year, the GPCAAC has already made great strides in promoting the arts in our area, and with good reason. According to Robert Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the Arts, an organization dedicated to advancing the arts and art education, art carries significant weight when it comes to economic impact. Through a survey conducted last year involving those attending arts-based events in communities across the nation, it was observed that the average person spent $25 beyond admission cost. And where might have that extra $25 been spent? The impact of being drawn to a location by a particular event also resulted in increased patronage at area restaurants, retail stores and hotels. Remember that such spending has occurred in the face of a down economy, which gives suggestion to the value people still place on the arts. Research within the tourism industry has continually shown that arts and cultural tourists tend to stay longer and spend more than the average traveler. Lynchs findings also reflected these results by revealing that nearly one-third of event attendees came from outside the county in which an event was held. This would suggest that if people were going to take the time to travel, they were intent on making their visit worthwhile. In fact, they were shown to have spent, on average about $40; over twice the amount as local attendees. This is the kind of activity that GPCAAC works to help generate. The purpose we serve is to encourage and support the arts in the communities of Ottawa County. We believe that a significant portion of our areas welfare depends on the success of the arts. By fostering a cooperative effort between artists and the public to promote the arts, we are doing our part to help attract positive growth. County Visitors Bureau and area Chambers of Commerce to promote this inexpensive and whimsical way to enhance and encourage Ottawa Countys reputation as an interesting and unique place to visit or live. Magruder Hospitals President & CEO, Todd Almendinger, announced that Nick Marsico, RPh, Director of Magruders Pharmacy and Administrative Director, has been promoted to Vice President of Ancillary Services . Marsico graduated from the University of Toledo with his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, graduating cum laude. During his tenure at the university he was a student ambassador, member of the pharmacy student council and the president of Alpha Zeta Omega professional organization. He then went on to complete a pharmaceutical care program through Ferris State University and the University of Purdue. Marsicos work history includes Pharmacy Team Leader for Meijer Pharmacy and an Operational Specialist for Pharmacy Systems Inc. Marsico came to Magruder in 2006 as the hospitals Director of Pharmacy and has been responsible for overseeing all operations of the department. He also serves on several committees within the hospital that directly impact the delivery of patient care and safety. In 2012, Marsico was promoted to the hospitals senior leadership team as an Administrative Director, responsible for overseeing the operations of respiratory therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation and sleep medicine in addition to the pharmacy. As Vice President of Ancillary Services, Marsico will remain head of the hospitals pharmacy in addition to increasing his responsibility over multiple clinical areas of the organization. Nick has been a great addition to our senior leadership team. He has proven himself a leader within the pharmacy department, throughout the hospital and among his peers, our board of trustees and medical staff. His skills and knowledge are invaluable to both the clinical and strategic goals of Magruder moving forward, says Almendinger. Marsico and his wife Jen live in the Oregon area with their two children and are actively involved in many school related activities and organizations.

The National Day of Prayer will be observed on May 2 on the grounds of the Ottawa County Courthouse in Port Clinton. Clergy from Port Clinton area churches will be leading prayers at the service which will begin at 12 noon. The National Day of Prayer was signed into law in 1952 by President Harry Truman, and in 1988 President Ronald Regan signed the law that set the date as the first Thursday in May. Ferguson Gallery to Host Peninsula Four, a Fine Art Event

Four local artists from the Marblehead Peninsula have turned the Ferguson Gallery glass blowing studio into a gallery show place. The Peninsula Four, comprised of Lori-Roberts-Cobbledick, Rick Dziak, Debbie Prue and Cary Ferguson, will be exhibiting approximately forty original paintings. All the paintings will be new work that has never been exhibited before, and will be for viewing and for sale. Over the last few years, the Peninsula Four have painted at the Dziak gallery, outdoors and at the Ferguson gallery/ studio. The paintings are as varied as their personalities. Some paintings are in oil and others in acrylic. The techniques include brush work and palette knife paintings on board or canvas. All of these fine artists have worked in the creative field for most of their lives, and it is this unique quality that brought them together. The gallery owner, Cary Ferguson, has been in business for thirty-four years, and said, I feel it to be an honor to host Artists Rick Dziak, Lori Roberts-Cobbledick, Debbie Prue and Cary Ferguson a show of such talented artists, and it will be a great opportunity for the public to view and support the talent within our own community. The exhibitions opening day will be May 11th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The artists will be on hand at various times throughout the day to discuss their work, and Oil Painters of America Signature Member Rick Dziak will be doing a demonstration of oil painting that will be open to the public. The demo will start at 1:30 p.m. Dziak is one of only two artists in Ohio to have been awarded that signature status. Demonstrations by the other artists will take place at various times throughout the duration of the show which will run through Memorial Day weekend. The exhibition will be on view during regular business hours of 10 a.m-5 p.m. daily, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sundays. The Ferguson Gallery is located at 5890 East Harbor Road. Lake Erie Arty Party A new event to support regional artists

A new downtown Port Clinton event plans to take the public art market to a new level. It will be held on Saturday, May 25, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Memorial Day Weekend, near the corner of Perry and Madison Street. The Lake Erie Arty Partys Event Manager Carolyn Rodenhauser states, We know that this region has some extremely talented artists and we plan to highlight that by creating a public art incubator in a fun and entertaining environment. We want to feature the seasoned professional as well as the up and coming artist. Our goal is to support our area artists and welcome other artists to perform and sell their works. We want to mix in creative retail, food, and fun to create a unique experience for residents and visitors. The new event will be located in downtown Port Clinton at 106 W. Perry Street and the adjacent Premium Auto lot at 116 W. Perry Street and will feature artists and vendors. Event managers are reaching out to visual artists, street performers, photographers, magicians, bands, musicians, food venders, crafters and artistic retailers. The daily vendor cost is $25. Watercolor Class with Charles Rowland offered

One Saturday, May 18, the Port Clinton Artists Club is offering a class with renowned watercolorist Charles Rowland. A watercolor artist for over 25 years, he is both an active artist and teacher. His work has won many awards in Ohio area exhibitions and can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the United States. Rowland will be teaching students how to combine shapes to give their painting a more interesting look, hard and soft edges, lost and found edges and color mixing. Recently the Oak Harbor High School DECA programs financial literacy promotion project, which included high school students Austin Wiegand, Nathan Segaard and Samantha Durivage, partnered with two of Mrs. Kriegers fifth grade mathematics classes at Oak Harbor Middle School. Krieger spearheaded the activity by registering her students into the Toledo Blades Stock Market Contest, sponsored and judged by Fifth Third Bank and the Toledo Blade. Krieger and the DECA students instructed fifth graders on basic investment vocabulary, stock market basics and how the exchanges work. The students are learning how to analyze current events that affect the economy and investments. In addition, the fifth grade students are learning about career opportunities within the financial sector, ranging from financial planners to stockbrokers. In the stock market contest the students are competing against 115 teams from across the area, grades five through twelve. Each team starts with a hypothetical $40,000 to invest in four stock picks from U.S. exchanges. The teams are trying to earn the most money they can from their start up money. The Billboard has generated a great deal of pride.

Port Clinton High School juniors Noah Cross and Jake Prosser have been selected to participate in the American Legion Buckeye Boys State. American Legion Post 113 selected the students to participate at event to be held June 9-16 on the campus of Bowling Green State University. Buckeye Boys State is an eight day intensive education program on Ohio government for high school students. American Legion Buckeye Boys State is a program where each participant becomes a part of the operation of local, county and state governments. During Boys State students experience the rights, privileges, duties and responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The students are elected to the various offices and participate in activities such as legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, band and recreation. High School juniors are selected by their local American Legion Posts.

Rather than duplicate what his parents were doing with a vegetable roadside stand in Curtice, he decided to take his chances on a new form of agriculture hitting the Midwest Community Supported Agriculture or CSA for short. People had been asking my parents if they would start a CSA with their vegetables, but they didnt have time to get it going, said Kurt Bench. So my wife and I decided to try developing one as a hobby, and the first year we had 12 customers, said Kurt Bench. That was five seasons ago. This year Shared Legacy Farms CSA in Elmore plans to grow enough vegetables to feed 350 families. And local interest is growing. Common in New England and the West Coast region, CSAs are essentially a vehicle for individuals or families to become members of a local farm and share in its weekly harvest. Members pay a set fee up front when they sign up, and in return each week of the growing season receive a box of fresh, organically-grown vegetables picked by their farmer. Customers pick up their share or box in one of six locations around the metro-Toledo area: Port Clinton (Sutton Center), Elmore, O-I Campus in Perrysburg, the Perrysburg Farmers Market, Sylvania, and Toledo Farmers Market. A half share costs $360, while a bigger, family share costs $680 for the whole 19 week season. Each weeks box contains roughly 7-10 different types of vegetables. Our customers never know what theyre going to get in their box. Its always a fun surprise for them, said Bench. They love learning about new vegetables and enjoying the old favorites. Along with their vegetables, members receive a weekly newsletter with recipes and menu plans to equip them with ways to use up everything in their box that week. It also includes educational articles about farming and even an entertaining journal entry by the farm dog entitled Siennas Diary. That newsletter gets more comments than anything else, says Bench. Since a lot of our customers are unaware of farm life, they enjoy learning about farm topics like the importance of bees or cover crops, or how organic farmers fertilize the crops. It becomes an education for the kids and the whole family. Members of the CSA are also invited to multiple Farm Day events each season, which allow them a peek at farm life in Elmore. They include the Harvest Hayride Potluck, Pizzapalooza, Pesto Fest, Flashlight Pumpkin Hunt, Farm Olympics, multiple canning classes to learn how to preserve vegetables and Spring Work Days. We have a high participation in those Farm Days, and its one of the things we do best. Families like to bring their kids and get their hands dirty in the soil planting potatoes or just walking the fields and smelling the fresh, country air. You dont get that in the suburbs. Its eye-opening for a lot of them. This year, Shared Legacy Farms is also taking another leap. As of April 1st, after five years of building the CSA business as a side-job, Farmer Kurt decided to leave his full-time job with ADM Grain to become a full-time farmer. It was time, said Kurt. I couldnt keep burning the candle at both ends, trying to farm in the dark every night. I had to commit to one or the other. Becoming a farmer has always been my dream. We found out how many customers wed need to make it financially possible to become self-employed, and we just decided to go for it. The gamble is paying off. To date, Shared Legacy Farms is just 25 vegetable shares away from becoming financially self-sustaining. And Farmer Kurt is finally living the dream. The Benches believe that what their customers want most -- aside from organic, delicious and fresh vegetables -- is the farm experience and a relationship with their farmer. Weve found that most of our customers want to be able to look us in the eye and feel good about where their food comes from. They want to be inspired to eat well again. Community Day at Schedels

The Schedel Arboretum & Gardens is hosting a free Community Day and Meet the Artists event on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The SA&G is a 17 acre garden estate located in Elmore. The nonprofit arboretum and botanical garden has been open to the public since 1991 and is home to many species of trees, plants and shrubs not commonly seen in this area. The grounds include displays of irises, peonies, roses, lilies, perennial plants and more than 12,000 annual plants and flowers each summer. The SA&G boasts a significant bonsai collection, Japanese garden, 1800s manor house, event center, tropical display garden, bamboo grove, a stand of dawn redwood trees and numerous other botanical attractions. Sculpture by local and international artists is also incorporated into the grounds, demonstrating the harmony between nature and the arts. The May 11 event will include free activities for the whole family. In addition to several displays on gardening, there will be face painting, a bonsai demonstration, worm composting , seed planting, a wool spinning demonstration, butterfly & insect display and a perennial plant sale. Visitors may enjoy Mothers Day shopping in the Garden Argosy Gift Shop amongst the hand-crafted items such as painted bird and butterfly houses, origami, bird feeders, jewelry and steel art works. Many of the artist vendors that have items for sale in the gift shop will be on hand. Jan Pugh of Packer Creek Pottery in Genoa will be giving a demonstration of her methods of creating her beautiful majolica ceramics. Coastal property owners urged to inspect for signs of erosion

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is reminding those who own or manage property along Lake Erie that early spring is a good time to inspect coastal property for signs of erosion or damage to existing shore protection structures. Heavy wind and wave action in the fall of 2012 combined with the effects of ice, as well as freezing and thawing during the winter may damage coastal property. Routine monitoring and maintenance of shore structures is necessary and will, over time, save coastal property owners money, said Office of Coastal Management Chief Scudder Mackey. Smaller repairs performed more frequently will be less costly than major repairs or replacement. Yearly inspections and repairs can often increase how long a structure will be effective at controlling erosion. The ODNR Office of Coastal Management provides free technical assistance to coastal property owners or residents who are experiencing erosion or have damaged structures. Coastal staff will guide littoral owners through the permitting process for construction of new shore structures and modifications to existing shore structures. Safety is of the utmost importance when inspecting shore structures and should be done from a safe location. This includes keeping a safe distance from bluff edges and downslope areas where falling material may be a hazard. It is important to document observations made during each inspection with photos and notes since this information can be helpful in comparing changes over time. Things that coastal property owners should look for include: Slumped areas of the bluff including areas above a revetment, seawall or unarmored shore; Increased erosion of the bluff or bank along an unarmored shore or at the ends of a structure; Significant changes to the beach, either at the site or along adjacent or nearby properties; Cracked concrete or armor stone; Armor stone that has moved down-slope (toward the water) from its original location; Uneven settling of seawalls or retaining walls; Seawalls, bulkheads or retaining walls that appear to be leaning; or Corrosion or ice damage to steel sheet piling or cribbing. If erosion issues or structural damage is observed, property owners should remember: Proper permits need to be obtained at the federal, state and local level prior to the construction of new structures and prior to rehabilitation or improvement of existing structures. Dumping material (rubble, yard waste, etc.) adds weight to the face of the bluff and can increase erosion. Leaves and grass clippings can become saturated with water and greatly increase the weight on the banks slope, directly causing slumping. Concrete rubble is ineffective as shore protection because individual pieces of concrete rubble are too light to withstand wave forces and are easily dispersed into the nearshore zone. Exposed rebar from broken concrete rubble is a significant public health and safety hazard along the shore. Any structures (concrete decks, stone walls) and heavy objects (vehicles or construction equipment) placed near the bank edge will increase the stress within the soil and can lead to slope failure. When possible, coastal property owners/residents should consider working with neighboring property owners to address erosion issues. This will generally save money and produce a more effective erosion control measure. Residents, businesses and communities are encouraged to contact ODNR with concerns or questions regarding what they have observed. In addition to in-person assistance, the ODNR Office of Coastal Management has various resources available to assist coastal property owners, including: Ohios Coastal Design Manual (LakeErie.ohiodnr. com/design) demonstrates how structures along the shore of Lake Erie should be designed and how coastal engineering principles are best applied; The Lake Erie Shore Erosion Management Plan (LakeErie.ohiodnr.com/erosion) provides recommendations to help control erosion based on site conditions; and Application and guidance materials for regulatory requirements (ohiodnr.com/tabid/9281/default.aspx). ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at ohiodnr.gov.

Catawba Island Voting Residents-Ballot Box Justice

Five tax-paying, law abiding, adjoining property owners wrote letters to the Township Trustees and attended meetings to stop the horrible smell of rotting fish in a local Motel in our neighborhood. For some reason, Trustee Rofkar said they have a right to clean fish under an accessory use clause he found somewhere. Nowhere in the laws is it found that in order to run a motel, it is necessary nor dependent on cleaning fish. Arguing that a fish cleaning operation is an accessory use to a Hotel/Motel does Violence to the well-established legal definition of accessory use. The Trustees arguments are misguided, directly contradictory to Ohio Law and are of no moment. This was language used in Court. They ignored the five of us and encouraged the one offending the neighborhood to continue his practice; I took the owner to Court and filed a Summary Court Injunction to stop this practice. Judge Winters found him guilty of 44 Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law and had him tear down his fish cleaning station and to permanently stop cleaning fish, Judge Moon awarded my wife and I $69,522.50 in damages. I spend over $14,000 in getting this done. The Motel owner is under foreclosure/receivership, has 37 liens against the property, amounting to tens of thousands of dollars for services, construction and financial institutions against the property. We probably will never see any of the award. All this because our trustees choose to ignore their own Zoning laws and nuisance laws in the revised Code of Ohio. They can do this and be protected under the Sovereign Immunity clause that they operate under. Common sense be damned, they can make their own laws and get away with it. You can be their next victim. The Governors Office, State Attorney Generals Office, the Ethics Committee and the Inspectors Generals Office cannot do anything about this. ONLY YOU CAN. BY VOTING EACH AND EVERY ONE OUT OF OFFICE. Someone that respects the rights of its citizens, follows the laws of Ohio, and wants something more than free health insurance, free life insurance, a part time job that nets them $$$$$ and a State retirement at the end of their tenure, needs to govern our Island, not the freewheeling obstinate group thats in there now. Beckers list reflected acute-care hospitals with the highest percent of patients who rated their hospital a nine or 10 on the HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) survey. It is a standard survey sent nationwide to randomly selected patients age 18 and over. Patients rate several aspects of their hospital care, including the hospital staff s communication and responsiveness, the hospital environment, pain management and whether or not the patient would recommend the hospital. A rating of nine or 10 means the hospital usually or always meets or exceeds patient expectations. The high score confirms what Magruder sees on its other patient satisfaction surveys. As an example, inpatient scores are at or above the 95th percentile and emergency services scores have been as high as the 98th percentile as compared to like-sized hospitals nationwide. These high scores have been consistent over the last several years. I attribute our high scores to the dedication of our staff, continued Almendinger. We regularly monitor our patient satisfaction and quality scores to determine how to maintain and improve our performance for patients. We listen to our patients and everyone at Magruder is in charge of this effort - it is a hospital-wide collaboration. The Home Instead Senior Care office serving Erie, Huron and Ottawa counties announced that it expects to add 50 CAREGivers to its existing staff in 2013. The local companys anticipated growth is a key indicator of the increasing demand for home care professionals and the strength of the industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of personal care aides is expected to grow by 70 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations. The rate of aging adults is increasing faster than the economy, and talented caregivers are in great demand, said Enedelia Marez, general manager of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Erie, Huron and Ottawa counties. The growth of the Home Instead Senior Care franchise network is particularly good news for older Americans searching for second careers. Franchisees anticipate mature workers will fill

many of the job openings. Currently, about 30 percent of the networks employees are 60 and older. For many, serving as a Home Instead CAREGiver helps them fulfill personal desires to give back, while offering job flexibility frequently sought by retirees. Many part-time opportunities are available for those seeking to stay active professionally, at reduced hours. We aim to provide quality, compassionate care to our senior clients and to do that, we need qualified, ambitious and caring individuals to serve as our CAREGivers, Hoyer said. the mid-1990s. Smallmouth bass caught should be excellent size (14 to 22 inches, weighing up to 6 pounds). Bass fishing is best in areas with good bottom structure, which is the available habitat across much of the entire Ohio near shore area. All black bass (smallmouth and largemouth) must be immediately released from May 1-June 28. Beginning June 29, the daily bag limit for bass is five, with a 14-inch minimum length limit. Steelhead Steelhead anglers should enjoy another year of great fishing in 2013 in Ohios Lake Erie open waters and in tributaries. Peak summer steelhead action on Lake Erie can be found offshore from June through August between Vermilion and Conneaut, with catches measuring 17 to 29 inches. Most Lake Erie anglers troll for steelhead in deep waters using spoons with dipsy divers or downriggers until fish move close to shore in the fall. The daily bag limit remains at five fish per angler from May 16-Aug. 31, and two fish per angler between Sept. 1 and May 15, 2014. A 12-inch minimum size limit is in effect throughout the year. White Bass White bass continue to provide excellent seasonal fishing opportunities in the Maumee and Sandusky rivers and in the open lake. The 2013 catch will be dominated by fish from the 2010 and 2011 year classes. Fish from 2005 could be as large as 16 inches. Anglers should focus on major Western Basin tributaries during May and June and near shore areas of the open lake during the summer. There is no white bass daily bag limit or size limit. Other Species Largemouth bass fishing efforts and catch rates have increased significantly. Bays, harbors and main lake shorelines offer excellent fishing for panfish, as well as largemouth bass. Anglers may also catch an occasional northern pike or muskellunge in vegetated areas. Anglers are reminded that fishing conditions on Lake Erie can change hourly and adjustments are often necessary to improve success. Anglers should take into account factors such as water temperature, cloud cover, water clarity, boat traffic, wave action, structure, currents and the amount of baitfish in the area. Anglers are also reminded to carefully monitor Lake Erie weather and to seek safe harbor before storms approach. Port Clinton Boys tennis took on Lexington Monday at Port Clinton High School in an Ohio Coaches Tournament Match. The Redskins fell to 6-2 on the year as Lexington won 5 - 0. From Coach Aaron Taylor: Matheus ran into an excellent player in Mason who was his Districts champion last year. Noah ran into a similar situation as Matt was his Districts runner-up to Mason. BY YANEEK SMITH After starting the season 0-4, the Port Clinton Redskins have rebounded to win five of their seven games to improve to 5-6 overall and 4-1 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. Most recently, the Skins defeated Huron, 6-2, behind a fine pitching performance from Kate Mueller that saw her strike out six and allow just two runs to notch the win. She got plenty of help at the plate, especially from Emily Ashley, who had a home run and two RBIs, and Paige Culver and Molly Haberman, both of whom went 2-for-3 and drove in a combined three runs.

The Skins won a pitchers duel by scoring two runs in the sixth inning to defeat Margaretta, 2-0. Allie Schroeder had two hits and an RBI and Sydney Adkins had a sacrifice fly to account for the games two runs. BY YANEEK SMITH Oak Harbor got off to a fast start, scoring four runs in the first two innings on its way to defeating Lakota, 8-6, at Fifth-Third Field on Saturday. Andy Rathbun led the way by going 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI, two runs and three stolen bases. Mark Konieczny had an RBI and scored twice and Garrett Harvey had two hits and drove in a run. Brandon Uher got the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in four innings of work. A.J. Cecil came in during the top of the sixth to relieve Justin Warnke when he got into some trouble to end the Raider threat and hold a 6-5 lead for the Rockets. Oak Harbor would add two runs in the top of the seventh to give themselves some breathing room.

BY YANEEK SMITH The Port Clinton baseball team got a big win last week, defeating Huron, 12-5, to improve to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. In a back-and-forth game that had two ties and two lead changes, Trey Gluth hit a two-run home run to break a 4-4 tie and give the Skins the lead for good. Entering the bottom of the fifth with the scored tied at 4, Port Clinton proceeded to score eight runs in the next two innings to break open the game. Cory Colston got the win, allowing four runs in five innings and striking out four. He had two hits and two RBIs at the plate, as did Zak Floro. Jason Bailey contributed with a double and two RBIs.

BY YANEEK SMITH Behind a fine pitching performance from starter Chase Botson, the Danbury Lakers defeated Old Fort, 11-0, in five innings at Fifth-Third Field. Botson gave up just two hits and struck out six batters in five innings. He also did well at the plate, getting on base three times, stealing two bases and scoring twice.
