Write an essay as to what you feel is the most likely form of terrorist attack on U.S. aviation and why.

Terrorists have attacked the United States aircraft and aviation infrastructure in the recent few years. These sort of oppressive attacks mainly comprise of the use of dangerous weapons, bombs, high jacking of planes by the commando trained teams. Major aviation facilities have been a victim of these terrorist attacks. Terrorists main aim is to capitalize on the shock of the attack and do more damage. Increase in incidents comprising of hijacking of aero planes has been observed from the 1980s. The reason for is that terrorist groups have been successful in developing ingenious ways to breach the high security at the aviation facilities. The September 11 attacks are the biggest example of it where terrorist were successful in getting hold of an aircraft and

Operator Security 4 used it as a weapon to carry out a suicidal mission. This caused the authorities to realize the flaws which were left unattended and it changed the way high jacking was viewed.( Dailey 2004) Al Qaeda, a notorious terrorist organization which showed its real power and ability to carry out dangerous terrorist attacks by High jacking an aircraft and using it as a suicide weapon in the September 11 attacks which rocked the whole world. They have shown their expert abilities and control over bombing methods and in the usage of modern explosive devices. A few

incidents in the last decade have forced the aviation sector and the security authorities responsible for the security of these facilities to review their security measures. Major improvements have been made in the screening process of passengers and the security levels have been increased after a few incidents. An example is the Bojinka incident, in which the bomber installed a bomb in a-flight. In an another incident which took place in 2001, the terrorist tried to carry bomb in his shoes on his way to board a flight which was supposed to travel to United States from France.( Brady 2000) More over Al Qaeda who is a major terror creator in the world has showed its potential to develop and recognize flaws in the security procedures to select their desired destinations to attack. They repeatedly try and work to check the security barriers at airports in search of flaws and loopholes they can

Operator Security 5 find to use against their targets. Individuals involving in terrorist acts prefer using small aircrafts but it limits their attacking power as they are less effective against major facilities. On the other hand large aero planes can be high jacked and used against bigger infrastructures. To counter these problems airport security plans implemented should not be predictable and custom. The use of hijacking as a form of terrorist attacks on aviation has been as a result of the mass casualties involved, symbolism of the attack, economic impact, and the generation of imagery by the media, the accessibility and opportunity for attack, and the vulnerability of the target.
