PPL Lesson 8 Overview

Sunday 21st April, 2013 Tecnam P2002jf with instructor Kyle Leith. Finally the day that Ive been waiting for all week had finally arrived, my flying lesson! This time I was flying at 1015z. I had checked the weather all week to make sure everything was looking good for my flying on Sunday, it wasnt the best of weather I was looking at, and just the wind was giving me some concern, so I kept an eye on that the whole way through the week. It came the Sunday morning of my lesson up at Ulster Flying Club (known at UFC), I woke up and looked outside, the wind didnt look the best at all to be honest, was quite gusty at times, sometimes hitting about 20kts in the gust. As I had some concerns of the weather I rung up my flying club at around 0830z. They said to me over the phone that the weather at the minute wasnt looking the best as there is meant to be rain heading across Newtownards (EGAD) around 0945z, but currently my lesson will still go ahead and if it is going to be cancelled I will get a phone call to confirm that. I waited until I had to leave at 0855z to make my way over to UFC. We arrived at UFC at 10.00, I walked in checked in at the desk and walked on through to the main room at the back of the club, and spoke to a few of the instructors while I waited for Keith to come back down from air with another student before me. Also I just read through some of my theory material to keep myself informed on what I was going to be doing in my lesson, of course I already did my homework but nothing wrong with having a quick scatter through the book while youre waiting. Keith had finally come down from the air and walked into the club, sorted out his student with the paper work and that was him. After, Keith had then started looking through my File to see what stage I was up to, came over to me and explained what exactly we were going to be doing up in the air. We were going to do a recap on Climbing and Descending, The Glide, Use of Flap in Descent, and he was going to test me on them during flight to see how I got on. Something new which was, The Medium Level Turn, Climbing Turn Descending Turns, Gliding Turns, Descending Turn Using Power, Descending Turn with Flap Extended, Turning onto Selected Headings and last of all Slow Flying. We had a rough briefing about each of the following, and after he asked me to go out and do the External Check on the aeroplane and he will come out and join me as soon as he as sorted a few things out. Today I was in G-UFCL (Golf Uniform, Foxtrot, Charlie, Limo). During my external check of the aeroplane, my mum came out with me as she wanted to see the aircraft, take a few pictures and also I was going to take her through some stuff in the aircraft and also outside the aeroplane. I went to the aircraft opened the canopy, stepped inside and started to read through the Before Flight Checklist. After I went out of the aircraft and did the External Checklist. Everything was all good and in working order as it should be. When I was doing my usual procedures before starting my flight, my mum just took some pictures during that. Finally my instructor came out and joined me. He asked was there anything to be reported that I thought didnt look right or anything that I think he should take a look at, and I give him some details and everything was all good and in working order. My mum went back inside the club building and me and Kiwi got into the aircraft and ran through a quick briefing, and I started the checklist. Seats & Belts .. Adjusted & Secure Canopy .. As Required Park Brake .. Set

Fuel Selector .. Left Tank And so on Once I had gone through all that, it was finally time to get to the part, Starting Engine Master Switch .. On Fuel Pump .. On Fuel Pressure .. Check Fuel Pump .. Off Choke .. As REQD Strobes .. On, select EMG Propeller Area .. Clear all around Magnetos .. Both Magnetos .. Start After a successful start, I ran through the After Engine Start Checklist, and obtained our airfield data with ATC. Today our call sign was Scrabo 69. Me: Newtownards Radio, Scrabo 69, request radio check and airfield information. ATC: Readability 5, Runway 22, QNH 2015 (mb), Scrabo 69. Me: Runway 22, QNH 2015, readability 5, Scrabo 69. So, airfield data obtained, instruments set, and so it was ready for the taxi. I looked to see if I was all clear, pushed the throttle forward slightly and taxied to the 22 hold and turned into the wind so we could complete our power checks. After we had done that I made another call to ATC, Scrabo 69, cleared for take-off, runway 22 ATC: Cleared for take-off runway 22, Scrabo 69. I lined up to the centre line of 22, pushed the throttle to full in 3 seconds, counteracted the yawing effect of the aircraft wanted to go right because of the slipstream of the prop, hit 50 knots and rotated into the air at Newtownards. Once I hit 300ft I raised the flaps from T/O 0 degrees, made a left turn to follow the coast of Strangford Lough where we would be doing are turning exercises and so on. We then Contacted Belfast Approach on 130.850. Once we had climbed up to 2500ft, I levelled off and we started into the exercises discussed before flight. Keith told me to complete certain manoeuvres, Climbing, Descending, and Gliding Descent (way to remember, P-A-T = Power, Attitude, Trim.) He said I performed each exercise fantastic and couldnt fault me for it, so we quickly moved on to the turning part. He demonstrated a few turns, giving me some tips and told me to have a go. It took me a left and right turn to figure out exactly when to turn out of the turn onto my exact selected heading, which after I had mastered that I didnt have any problems what so ever, and learnt it quickly, and my instructor was pleased with my progress. We did Slow Flying, which again I did very well and caught on to what I was being told fairly quickly (reading the theory material thoroughly helps a lot as I have found out, and complete the exercises very well!). After about 45 minutes in the air it was time to make our way back to EGAD (Eco, Golf, Alpha, Delta). I flew the plane the whole way back, with my instructor giving me headings to turn out to so we could join the circuit above Newtownards. We left radar contacted with Belfast Approach and went back to Newtownards on 128.300. So after a few minutes or so I made the last turn to the right to line up with runway 22 for my approach. By this point I knew that I was the one going to be landing the Tecnam! Yay! I put down the rest of the flaps, and reduced my speed to 60kts, making a few throttle

adjustments to maintain that desired speed. I made a call to ATC: Scrabo 69, on final runway 22. I got above the runway, pulled the throttle back to idle, I flared and finally I had touched down onto the runway making a faultless landing and applied the brakes lightly to slow us down. My instructor said to me, Congratulations on a great landing! I was so happy, and replied with, thank you! and I smiled a lot as you could imagine. We turned left onto runway 15 as there was two aircraft coming into land straight behind us and waited for them to come in. I and Keith just spoke to each other about some stuff while we waited for the aircraft to come into land. One of them being a Micro light first, and the second being another student practising a touch and go in the Cessna 172. The Student in the Cessna made a good touch and go landing and with Keith just giving the student some quick tips over the radio. So we then made our way onto runway 22 again, backtracking to the Apron of EGAD, we got to our parking position, came to a stop, applied the brakes and so I started with the Shutdown. Parking Break .. Set On Throttle .. 1000RPM (for 1 minute) Magnetos .. Check Live Mag Radios & Avionics .. Off Electrical Equipment .. Off Throttle . Closed Magnetos .. Right 5 seconds Off Strobes .. Off Master Switch .. Off Fuel Selector .. Left Shutdown Complete! We got out of the aircraft and made our way into the club building; I followed Keith into the room while he sorted out the paper work. He asked me if I had any questions which I didnt surprisingly enough. It was a great lesson and I was very pleased with how I performed! I added another 0.8 hours to my total, making me have a total of 6.2hours and counting.
