BELOVEDS IN CHRIST,
oly Spirit Day, which we call Pentecost, is May 19th! We will celebrate here with Holy Eucharist, Holy Baptism, balloons and a Birthday-of-theChurch party. Please join us! Can you define the Holy Spirit? some have asked me. After referencing The Holy Spirit in our Catechism on pages 852-3 of our Book of Common Prayer, trying to not be a smart aleck I ask, Can you define define? My dictionary says that the word define comes from Latin words that mean to put a boundary around; to put an end to; to state precise meaning. Since we cannot limit, bound or end God, especially God we know as Holy Spirit, and because the Bible speaks of God as boundless, unending, unlimited and not having precise meaning, No, I cannot define the Holy Spirit. And, we experience much we cant define. Define time. Define love. Define human spirit. The Holy Spirit is God. Christians relate God the Holy Spirit/Sustainer to God the Father/Creator and God the Son/Redeemer in the divine Trinity (Trinity Sunday is May 26th). When our faith was mentioned for the first time to an Asian man who was curious about Christianity, an old story goes, he said, Ah, now I see. You are governed by a divine committee. When told that in the story of Jesus baptism the divine Son heard a voice from heaven and saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, the same man said, Father I understand; Son I understand; bird I do not understand at all. Such puzzlement should inform us that we have work to do in approaching the concept and reality of the Spirit. Despite our best efforts, we finally must give up trying to say what the Spirit is and turn to saying what the Spirit does: The Spirit hovers over the waters at creation: Creator Spirit. The Spirit is the breath of God in the voice of the prophets; God inspires, and speaks to and through, the human voice and human writings. The Spirit appears at Jesus baptism as a sign that, from the first, Jesus participates in the boundless, endless nature and activity of God. Jesus claims that the Spirit commissions him. In Johns Gospel Jesus promises the Spirit, and after Jesus is bodily removed from the disciples and this world, the Paraclete --usually this Greek word is translated Comforter-- comes (Acts 2:1-21). The Spirit is presented as a divine advocate who takes our side, speaks up for us, makes us strong and makes Christ a living presence. Paul sets a good example by firmly refusing to define the Spirit; but he makes Christ central to whatever he wants to say about God and closely connects Christ with the Spirit.

We are considering having a similar event here at Saint Michaels which would be a fund raiser and an all parish event. Come along and enjoy the day with us. Rectors Desk from page 1 Today, the Spirit creates, speaks, anoints, comes, empowers: the lifeless comes alive. The past becomes present. The long ago is as fresh as the now, and the Spirit moves us toward tomorrow. The Spirit --undefined, unending, unlimited-- acts among and in us. The Spirit, promised by the Father, connected with Jesus Christ, comes to us when we cannot naturally come to him; and there are no limits, no ends to what God would work now, through us. So we do not define. We pray: Come, Holy Spirit!

WHAT IS PLANNED GIVING?

This is the first in a series of articles based on information supplied by the Episcopal Church Foundation. For more information about establishing a planned gift for the benefit of Saint Michael & All Angels, please contact our rector.--Ed. lanned giving encompasses a variety of ways that gifts can be made to the church from accumulated resources. It usually involves financial or estate planning; however, it is not reserved for the wealthy. Planned giving is a means by which anyone concerned with the wise use of his or her personal resources makes a considered choice about their ultimate disposition. In general planned gifts are made through: * A Bequest in a Will * A Life Income Gift such as a pooled income fund, a charitable gift annuity, or a charitable remainder trust * Gifts of Special Assets (real estate, closely held stock, life insurance, retirement accounts) Planned giving establishes a way for a donor to provide for family members while remembering the church as well. It often enables the donor to provide more for his or her heirs and to make a larger gift than thought possible. It often reduces taxes as well. Planned gifts can be designated for an organizations general funds or its endowment. Planned gifts are either outright gifts (i.e., gifts of appreciated securities, real property, personal property, etc.) or deferred gifts (i.e. bequests, property, etc.) or deferred gifts (i.e. bequests,charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts). A BEQUEST IN A WILL Perhaps the easiest and most common way of making a planned gift is through your will. Yet over 50% of Americans do not have one. (continued in the next column)

If you die without a will, the state will divide your assets among your spouse and children (regardless of their age); appoint an administrator that may cost the estate large fees; and appoint guardians, who may or may not have been your choice, for your dependents. The state makes no charitable contributions, and it will ensure that your estate pays as much tax as possible. By making a will, you appoint your own administrator; you name the guardian of your dependents; you control applicable taxes; you can create a famil y or charitable trust; and you can share your resources with your family, church, or other institutions as you choose. A bequest in a will can take the form of a set amount of money, a percentage of an estate, a specific asset, a trust, or the naming of a church-related organization as a contingent beneficiary. Sample language for including the church in your will might be: I give, devise, and bequeath (state amount, asset, or percentage of the estate) to (name and address of your church) to be used (describe use) or as the churchs governing board or vestry deems appropriate. The next article in this series will touch on life income gifts, gifts of real estate, appreciated property and tangible property and gifts of life insurance and retirement accounts. [Episcopal News Service] The Rev. Amy McCreath awoke in Washington, D.C., April 19 to learn that her parish of Church of the Good Shepherd in Watertown, Massachusetts, was close to the epicenter of an unprecedented manhunt for the second of two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing. She also soon learned that the Episcopal Church sometimes is really just a small parish. Soon after a call from her bishop, the Rt. Revd M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE, of the Diocese of Massachusetts, McCreaths phone kept ringing. Ive heard from quite a few bishops and parishes all over the country and friends and Ive been just very moved and amazed by the power of social media and the connectedness we have through the Episcopal Church, she told Episcopal News Service. As soon as she learned the news, McCreath said she, one of the wardens of the parish, and an intern began contacting parishioners. Before coming to Good Shepherd in 2010, McCreath was the Episcopal chaplain at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, 26, of Somerville, was killed at about 10:30pm April 18 during what the Boston Globe called a chaotic, violent night that preceded the April 19 manhunt. My heart goes out to the MIT community. Im a huge a fan of the MIT police, McCreath said. Theyre top notch. I am grieving with them as they mourn the loss of a fine colleague. Events began to unfold on the evening of April 18 after the FBI released photos of two then-unidentified men they called armed and extremely dangerous. They had asked the publics help in identifying the men but added a cautionary warning. Continued on page 5

Journey
n April 21 st, the JOURNEY members said their goodbyes, and during the 8 and 10am worship services on April 21, the JOURNEY class was decommissioned. I remember how many months ago, in the early season of summer 2012, the concept of JOURNEY came before the Christian Education Committee. Father Jeff Hulet presented a ministry that he and his wife, DJ had actively participated in at their former parish in New Jersey. The JOURNEY ministry was comprised of two elements: Lectio Divina, which is a form of contemplative prayer, and a teaching time of Anglican history. JOURNEY was accepted and embarked in the fall of 2012. On November 19, fifteen parishioners and two clergy gathered to begin the JOURNEY program held in the North Wing of Saint Michael & All Angels. Every Monday night the class started at 7pm and ended at 9pm. Father Hulet began each class session with a selection of music and an introduction to the nights discussions. Following the introduction time, the group participated in Lectio Divina for one hour. In Lectio Divina, people sit together in small groups and listen to a Scripture reading. Time is given to reflect and to contemplate what the Holy Spirit may be saying through this reading. Each person present is given time to share his or her thoughts. Lectio Divina takes place during the first hour of the class. After a break for refreshments, the second hour of JOURNEY is dedicated to a time of teaching. Father Jeff led the class through five teaching modules over a . period of six months. Module One: Origins of Anglicanism and the Episcopal Church, Nov.-Dec.

Boston continued from page 3 The two men led police on a long chase during which they fired on police. During the gunfight, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, apparently was wounded. At some point, his younger brother, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, ran over Tamerlan and escaped, according to several media reports. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was brought to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center emergency room about 1:10am with multiple traumatic injuries. He was pronounced dead at 1:35am. The Rev. Samuel T. Lloyd III, priestin-charge of Trinity Church Copley Square, told his parish April 19 that the Rev. Patrick C. Ward, Trinitys associate rector for worship and communications who lives in Belmont, reported that much of the gunfire of the night was happening only blocks from his home. In his letter to the parish, Lloyd said that in moments like this its crucial for us to remember who we are and whose we are. Amid the tension and anxiety of the moment, we remain a people held in Gods love, certain of our ultimate safety in Gods providential care, and called to be Christ to each other and our city in even the hardest of times, he wrote. Bp. Shaw asked early on April 19 for prayers while police conducted their search. Please pray for all in the affected communities, and pray for a speedy and violence-free resolution to these disturbing events. Keep watch, Lord, with those who work or watch or weep this day. The diocesan offices and the Cathedral Church of St. Paul office near Boston Common were closed. Members of both Good Shepherd and Trinity Copley Square gathered in prayer for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings earlier in the evening of April 18. What Lloyd called a goodly number of Trinity parishioners gathered for a service of music and prayers at the intersection of Berkeley and Boylston streets, which he said has become the main gathering place for taking in the deserted landscape in and around Copley Square. The marathons finish line is on Boylston just yards from the west side of Trinitys building. During the service the choristers led us in singing Amazing Grace and

God spoke in new ways to me. I made new friends and learned about the sacred journeys of those contemporary and those of the past. JOURNEY was a time of commitment and fellowship. Those who participated in the course grew in their understanding and knowledge of their faith. JOURNEY has been like waking up to new riches in my faith journey, in prayer and in listening and deepening friendships. Corinne Stover. What a wonderful JOURNEY it was! ormation is the catch word and the name of the curriculum adopted for our fifth through eighth graders in Sunday School, beginning May 5th in the Green Room. Just as we seek to grow in our faith, our youth look for ways consciously or unconsciously to understand the how, why and why not of the contents of the Creed we recite each Sunday. The Formation curriculum meets those basic tenets with direct strategies for thought, discussion and humour. Another piece in the Christian education program is the Childrens Choir. Stephen Black (Director of Music Ministry) is working to find an agreeable time for that choir to rehearse. How important is it to have a Childrens Choir in a Church? Let me count the ways: 1) Young singers can absorb understanding of our faith through the words of hymns and songs; 2) When children sing and participate in the worship service, the liturgical experience is deepened for the congregation; 3) When making music together, choir singers bond and develop a sense of community with each other, also extending their bond to the larger church community; 4) Music itself enriches the life and soul of the singer. Remember that St. Augustine tells us that singing is praying twice. Our JOURNEY group has concluded their work under Fr. Jeff Hulet, having met for the last time on April 15th. A new JOURNEY group begins next Fall. Meanwhile all other Christian Education. program parts continue: the Mens Group weekly meetings, Vestry meetings, Sundays at Nine, choir rehearsals, handbell rehearsal yes, all provide Christian Education to souls in growth.

As presented at our Annual Parish Meeting on Feb. 3, our parish sanctuary is in need of refurbishing. The goal is to accomplish this during the coming summer months. The question now becomes how to provide the funds for these needed items. As you can see from the breakdown below, the bids come in at $22,849.00 If we could get a bit more than that it would cover any extras (in my house there are always extras). A NEW BOOK BY NORA GALLAGHER Nora Gallagher of Trinity Church, Santa Barbara, is author of a new book, Moonlight Sonata at the Mayo Clinic, to be released May 21. Described by its publisher as a medical mystery, a spiritual crisis, a riveting memoir, the book covers Gallaghers diagnosis of a serious eye condition and its treatment at the famous Mayo medical clinic. According to Publishers Weekly, This book offers a response, both poetic and emotive, to illness, uncertainty, and faith that is both meditative and highly relatable for anyone who has experienced life-threatening illness or supported a loved one who has. Gallagher is the author of Changing Light, Things Seen and Unseen: A Year Lived in Faith and Practicing, Resurrection: A Memoir of Work, Doubt, Discernment, and Moments of Grace. Her essays, book reviews, and journalism have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, DoubleTake and Mother Jones, among other publications. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. This monnths featured pamphlet is "Baptismal Promises Explained" which reminds all of us what our Baptismal vows mean. For example, "Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?" "Continue" means every day, whether you feel like it or not. "A covenant is a solemn agreement or commitment. Once a covenant is made it is no longer optional." We promise to meet with others to study God's word and the teachings of the church and discuss them "and discern how the Holy Spirit calls us to live God's Word in our day." It means "to gather together simply to experience the joy and blessing of being with others who are trying to live faithfully." The author goes on in some detail to discuss the importance of Eucharist and daily prayers. Each Baptismal promise is given a detailed and meaningful explanation. aint Michael & All Angels Church is privileged to host the vocal ensemble LYRA from St. Petersburg, Russia in concert on May 18. Here is an excerpt from a review in the Washington Post, written by Andrew Malone and dated August 30, 2004. LYRA produced a pure a cappella sound that could both fill the intimate space and drop to an edge-of-yourseat whisper, and the ensemble coordination remained impeccable through even the most complex polyphony. The groups clear harmonies gave a sense of how the unique flavor of Orthodox music persists in both the clean, bright music of 17th-century Dmitri Bortniansky and the aching chromatics of turn-ofthe-last-century Pavel Tchesnokov. Dobri Khristovs Praise the name of the Lord made the greatest impression of all, though, because it featured a

solo by Vladimir Feliauer, one of those force-of-nature Russian basses, whose tone was rock-solid and velvetsmooth no matter how low he went. After the sampling of intense, elevated Orthodox music, the singers postintermission entrance in traditional dress and singing a jaunty folk tune brought everything back to earth. The simpler music offered showcase solos for most of the singers, and lots of broad acting, like Ekaterina Isatchenkos charmingly coquettish posing in Black-browed, black-eyed fellow, partially made up for the lack of texts and translations. Yet it was the Russian Orthodox music, especially in LYRAs fine performances, that left one wanting more. Opportunities to hear live performances of a cappella repertoire from the great repertory of Russian sacred and secular vocal music are quite rare. For that reason alone, this promises to be an extraordinary event. Please come to the concert, and invite your friends! The program is on Saturday evening, May 18, at 7:30 P.M. LYRA is a community of professional musicians. Most of our members are students or postgraduates of Saint-Petersburg Conservatoire, working in different choirs of Saint-Petersburg. Some of us are also soloists at musical theatres of our city. Though the members of our community represent different musical professions: choir conductors, opera singers, instrumentalists, music teachers - we are all united by love for choir and ensemble singing. The choir community LYRA includes about 25 people. However, due to different difficulties connected with the arrangement of concerts for such a numerous group, we usually perform in small groups of soloists consisting of 5-6 people, trying to keep the harmony of choir sound. In 2001 we were awarded the Montreux (Switzerland) international choral festival diploma. In 2005 our group was also a winner of Coleraine International Choral Festival (Northern Ireland). --Sergey Tupitsyn, Artistic Director
