Teachers Name: Zachary Gates Grade: K Telling with Instruments

Date: 4/4/13 Title of Lesson: Story

Plan
Behavioral: Learners will be able to keep the beat of music, and act on auditory cues to begin their rhythm. Cognitive: Learners will understand that different instruments can evoke different sounds and meanings. Experiential: Learners will encounter teamwork skills, fine and gross motor skill development through playing the instruments, and that music can be thematic Critical Objective: Learners will perceive differently the effort it takes to make a song, as well as their own creativity through deciding what instruments to play when.

Partner: Have students sing a long to the song (learned by rote) and talk about how just as we can make different hand signals (which weve practiced) we can use different instruments Present: 1. Play and sing along with the song What Would I Do so they can hear all the different things being described in the song. 2. Pair the kids in equal groups, and assign each group part of the song (Rain, Puddle, Mud, Grass, Driveway, Backyard) 3. Have each group agree on an instrument theyd like most for their part of the story. Have them decide on a speed and/or volume 4. Once they have decided, have the students play their instruments in the right order of events in the song. Practice and run through with breaks. 5. Have final performance and talk about Personalize: By picking their instruments, speed, and volume, they are able to show their creativity in how they feel the story should sound like with the music.

Focusing Question: In what ways will students work together and match instruments with sound effects and agree on those instruments.

Assessment:
Formative: Ask why music can tell a story, and what their favorite part of the song is Summative: Have them perform their part of the song in front of the class.

Materials:

-Various Orff Percussion -Music for What Would I Do by Randy Sauer - Guitar

Perform: Students will perform their parts for each other within the group, and then will perform for the class as a whole at the end of class. Assessment will be taken from this final performance, as well as ability to work together inside the group to arrive to the final performance.

Process: Will students be able to work together? Will they be too used to doing the choreography for the song? Will they be dissatisfied and distracted by disappointment with not having their way as to what instrument they want? Did I use enough guidance with the groups to help have this not
