Spring at last! Let the rides begin! Think safety first. Besides checking our bikes condition, its time to clean out last years accumulation of garbage from our saddlebags and start fresh. Air up tires, clean up our beautiful Gold Wings and ride into the wind with helmets on. Now is the time to notice gravel at intersections so we need to slow down, take notice, and drive defensively. Now that we Barkers have our stuff put away since moving, we can sit back and enjoy the mountains with a fluffy coat of snow. Wont be long until the snow is melted and warm weather approaches. Thats the time to ride in the mountains and enjoy the smell of sweet pines.

Have you registered to attend Big Sky in Montana this July? Gold Rush is a fun time and well be there to welcome you. Therell be lots to do and spectacular scenery to explore. Yellowstone is just around the corner too. Lets take time to enjoy the sights. Dont feed the bears! Bring your hiking boots and camera. Dont forget your GPS. I prefer a hard copy, hands on map! Leave the techie stuff at home! While youre packing you may want to throw in a journal for recording this trip. Some people keep track of mileage, road conditions, scenes worth noting, and fellow riders met on this journey some who will become life-long friends! Heres encouragement to mingle with folks you didnt know before. Have lunch or dinner with someone new. We can be proud of our GWTA organization. Lets make an effort to reflect a positive spirit in promoting what our Association has to offer. What can we offer to GWTA? Enthusiasm for Destination Friendship! Dan says Dont be late, see you there! Dan & Kathleen Barker Family of the Year

Gold Rush, Big Sky Resort Information

Gold Rush 2013
Up High in Big Sky Hello Friends! Gold Rush 2013 is right around the corner. We have about a month and a half until spring transforms our area. By now, you are already aware of the scenic beauty in Big Sky. The not-so distant mountain ranges are spectacular. Here in Big Sky, you will stay in the heart of one of Montanas most beautiful mountain ranges. This months article covers all aspects elevation, including what to expect and how to prepare. Big Sky Resorts mountain village is located at 7,500 ft. above sea level. This is where all things related to Gold Rush will take place, including lodging. Big Sky Resort is known for many things, but altitude sickness is rarely one of them. In comparison to many of its Rocky Mountain counterparts, Big Sky Resort is a ski resort that is fairly low in elevation. Compare 7,500 ft. to Breckenridges 9,600 ft. What is altitude sickness? The common symptoms include headache, fatigue, stomach illness, and sleep disturbance. These symptoms can start within hours of arrival and last a few days. How can you prepare before arrival? If you know that you commonly suffer from elevation sickness, you can look into alternative lodging options. Big Sky Resorts Central reservations offer a discounted Gold Rush lodging rate at the Whitewater Inn (6 miles from the mountain village, and at an elevation of 6,500 ft.). For more information, contact the 800 number listed below. The most important steps that you can take are when you arrive on property. Each room has a humidifier in it. I recommend filling it with water and turning it on immediately upon arrival. This will help with the dryness in the air. The second and most important thing that you can do is to drink water, and lots of it! I hope this article will answer your elevation questions. Altitude sickness can be a concern in many mountain destinations, but rarely in Big Sky. TOURING NEWS

In January, I was attending a State Staff meeting here in Northern California when I was asked if I had received any paperwork regarding the Rider Education Program. At that time I had received none, which prompted a few folks to track it down and send it to me for review. Some of the forms went back to 2011 and others were from 2012. After reviewing all the information I want to share the results with you as these participants in the RED Program deserve their recognition: All of the participants are from Region B but from various Chapters. Name Lynn Hollenbeck Jana Van Housen Harry Mixie Mary Mixie Gary Wright Sam Karnezis Bill Jamison State Chapt. CA CA NV NV CA CA CA NL NL B B NF NF NE RED Information Achieved Level I Rider 05/11 and Level IV 05/12 Achieved Level I Co-Rider 05/11 and Level IV 05/12 Achieved Level I Rider 05/11 Achieved Level I Co-Rider 05/11 Achieved Level I Rider 05/11 Achieved Level III Rider 05/12 Achieved Level III Rider 05/12

Having received this information I started wondering how many more GWTA members have achieved a Level in the RED Program and never received their due recognition? If you feel you have met the requirements for one of the Levels in the RED Program I encourage you to send me the information so I may verify what you have and acknowledge your achievements. If you have taken a CPR and First Aid Class a copy of those cards sent to me by e-mail would be really great. This is your program and I encourage you to participate. Last month my Safety Tip of the Month ended with, Take a Safety Course. I have been riding for 25+ years and have been a MSF Instructor for 22. Last weekend I taught a Range Class and was reflecting on the fact that every time I teach my skills get a refresher course. If you are an Instructor you automatically achieve Level IV in the RED Program so let me know if you are and would like to get the RED Patch and Rockers. Being an Instructor is a real commitment to Safety and you deserve to be recognized. Safety Tip of the Month: Take this word LIFE and circle the middle two letters. Then ask yourself the following questions: What IF I dont do TCLOCK on my bike before a ride? What IF I dont wear the proper clothing? What IF I am not prepared mentally or physically to ride today? What IF I dont take that Safety Program? What IF I dont get involved in the GWTA Rider Education Program? Now instead of thinking about all the negative sides of these questions, remove the word dont or notfrom each and think about all the good that would come to you as a Rider or Co-Rider if you do them all How safe would you feel on your next ride? A Life in the Day of a Biker

Part 3: The Racers Edge
By Dave Norton Region A, Chapter M, Mountain Valley Riders
Last time we left Dave lusting over a new Honda Trail 50 Russ and I were hooked on the new Honda trail bikes; we each had to have one. Long Beach Honda provided them, $200 each, and they even swapped motors so we got the 4-speed tranny from the 50 Sport C110 version, at no charge (they happened to have a lady customer who really wanted the automatic clutch in her C110, it was a simpler world then). I recall vividly the first trip Russ and I took on the bikes together, up Highway 39 out of Garden Grove to the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California. Cruising side-by-side through Buena Park, we could hear the beat frequency of the two exhausts thrumming against each other, what a feeling of raw power! It helps to have some grasp of the state of exhaust system technology in those early years: no mufflers at all. The entire exhaust system consisted of a 1 diameter

Photos: Dave Norton

chromed steel pipe running down and back, with a rounded bull-head cap closing the end. The outlets were a set of narrow vertical slots in the completely hollow pipe. We thought the exhaust note had a crisp bark to it then. The same sound now would send dogs yelping away and cops waiting on your driveway before you ever got the garage door up. This was the beginning of a high-frequency hearing loss we both share. WHAT? I SAID THIS WAS THE BEGINNING OFoh, never mind. At about this time, buddy Blake invited us to join his family for their annual trek to the Santa Barbara Road Races, an event that was to shape both our lives (in avocation and vocation, to varying degrees). As we approached the circuit (the Goleta municipal airport), we could hear the high whine of the Grand Prix bikes knifing up through the gears, the scream echoing off

20

March 2013

the rows of hangars and buildings in an eerie wail. I still feel that same tingle and my heart drops a gear and punches it each time I approach any racing venue and hear that siren song. Honda was all-powerful then, winning all three Grand Prix motorcycle classes across the board. Images, audio and visual, persist through the years: Ken Miles in a tiny silver giantkiller RS-60 Billy Krause in the brutishly beautiful Tipo 61 Birdcage Maserati Jim Parkinsons ill-handling but blindingly fast Campbell Special The Long Beach MG Clubs Morris Minor flatbed truck following the thundering herd of A-Production Corvettes off the grid into turn one, the guys bailing out to fetch the various Fiberglas evidence of conflict And, one scene in particular: Russ and I on the fence, watching the Sedan class come off the back straight under braking for the last turn, as a Volvo 444 and 850 Mini battle furiously for next-tolast place. It was at that point that we reached that most dangerous and expensive of realizations: Hell, WE could do better than that! With our bikes, Russ and I taught ourselves the elements of road racing at the 5 hp level, on dirt fire roads. Of most value were the coasting races: starting at the top of Black Star Canyon Road and coasting the two or so miles down, we learned the value of conserving momentum, minimizing braking and maximizing exit speed. Trail braking (no pun intended), delayed apex, and treading the very edge of the friction circle brought immediate benefits. Smoothness and fluidity were all. A locked brake on the dirt surface under these conditions would often have meant a trip over the edge and into the pucker-bushes. Our trusty Honda Trail 50s did yeoman service for us through the following summer, until our sophomore year at college beckoned. Stay tuned for part 4: SoCal to Oregon on 50cc a day! TOURING NEWS

1910 Nostalgia Continued from March 2013 Issue

This is a picture of the 1910 72 foot Lawley that Judy and I owned and lived aboard with two teenaged daughters.

Now just let your mind wonder a bit and think of what it must have been like in 1910 to pull up alongside this boat in a 1910 automobile.

This has only been 102 years agoAmazing!

22

March 2013

Here are some statistics for the Year 1910:

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only. Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower! The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME. Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard.' Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo. There was no such thing as under arm deodorant or tooth paste. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. The five leading causes of death were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2, Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars. The population of Las Vegas Nevada was only 30! Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A.! Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help. I am now going to forward this to someone else without typing it myself. From there, it will be sent to others all over the WORLD...all in a matter of seconds! Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years. Submitted by Don Coons

GWTA , Wheres the Value?

GWTA, Wheres The Value?

sole purpose of GWTA is to enhance this motorcycling lifestyle with friendships and social activities. We do not have an underlying motive as a commercial organization. Everything is organized, run and maintained with volunteers just like you. If the activities are not of interest to you, volunteer to help make a change. Of course a GWTA membership has even more value beyond the Chapter. Expand your opportunities by visiting other Chapters, participating with their events. Meeting more riders, learning more, sharing our knowledge and fun, this is where the value is. With all the Regional activities and the National events such as Gold Rush to take advantage of, your participation can be very rewarding. GWTA presents a unique opportunity to enjoy your lifestyle. Most of us also belong to organizations that offer benefits and services. But they serve a different purpose. Generally most members do not become an active part of the organization, but take advantage of those tangibles since they are a commercial business. The motor league, retail stores with club cards, and even some other organizations that appear similar to GWTA on the surface, may fall into this category. Bottom line, if you do not choose to become involved in new activities, or participate beyond your Chapter or volunteer to make those changes, you will not likely find any real value to GWTA membership. If you do, you will be like many enthusiastic members, getting the most out of being a proud member of GWTA. The choice, as always, is up to you. Ride Safe, Ride Often, Kevin Welch Region J Director GWTA

Many years ago I remember my father being a member of a bowling league. Every Thursday he would put on his league bowling shirt, take his bowling bag, and be gone for the evening. I know he spent some hard earned cash to be on the league, to bowl every week, to attend the special banquet dinner after each season, pay for shirts, shoes and everything else that goes with being a league bowler. What value did he get from this? What did he get for his money? Did he win prize money? Sadly, NO Did he get special discounts for trips or appliances? NO Did he get a magazine? NO Why did he go bowling every week for years? It came down to much the same reasons we enjoy being part of GWTA. We enjoy the opportunities to meet people, create friendships, all within an activity we enjoy. I dont know of anyone that participates in an organization, attending dinners and breakfasts, being part of meetings and travelling to various events, just so they can receive some tangible benefits. I subscribe to three motorcycle magazines. One is published locally, they write about the roads and attractions in my own backyard. Another magazine is national and is from a different perspective. They often write about new models coming into the country, and about legislation and insurance that affects all of us. The third magazine is a national brand specific publication I sometimes find interesting. With my busy schedule I am lucky to be able to read one or two articles from each magazine. Some months I dont even read anything from one or more magazines. That is when I have doubts if I am really getting some value in subscribing to any of these publications. Its not really the quality of the articles, or the pictures (guys like pictures), it has to do with me. I just dont make the time to enjoy catching up on all the news in the motorcycling community. Again the opportunities are there, its up to you to enjoy them or not. GWTA has so many areas to participate in. Your Chapter has the ability to choose whatever they wish to do. There is no mandate set out by management since we are membership run. The

Spring Is On The Way in Canada

Spring is on the way in Canada

When does the riding season start in Canada?
The small fee for lunch netted a healthy donation to our charity, the March of Dimes. This is a win - win event. The dealership gets everyone motivated into the riding season with purchases, GWTA gets lots of exposure, the March of Dimes gets some much needed cash, and our members have a lot of fun.

Perhaps it started in early March! Markham Outdoor Power, a very popular Honda dealer with our GWTA members had their annual Daytona Days event on March 9. With snow still on the ground but the roads cleared and dry, several bikes showed up for the event. We have a very close relationship with some of the dealers in Region J, in fact the owner of Markham Power, Dan Lawrence is a member of GWTA. In addition, the parts manager is the Chapter Director of our largest Chapter in Region J, York Simcoe Riders.

At the Daytona Days event, the Toronto Wings Chapter ran the barbecue, serving up hot dogs and burgers to hungry riders, some rode their bikes to the event. This Chapter has lots of experience looking after the barbeque at Dans dealership with several past barbecues under their belt. This was a very successful event, serving up hundreds of dogs and burgs for the lunch crowd.

Dan is planning another big event at his dealership in a couple of months with our good friends at Honda Canada supplying some bikes for demo rides. Of course, GWTA will be there to serve up a few hundred hot dogs and greet all the riders that drop by.

Our members really enjoy being an active part of the motorcycle community with GWTA providing the opportunity to do so. Thanks to the chefs and support staff, Kevin Welch Region J Director

3 Flags Classic --2nd CHECKPOINT

By Ralphine Andrus, Co-Region A & B Director I know this article should have been written last September but life got in the way; however, the memory is intact and can be relayed as if the event took place last week. As many of you know, my husband Steve rides the 3 Flags Classic tour every year during the Labor Day Weekend. The 3 Flags Classic Tour is sponsored by the Southern California Motorcycle Association (SCMA). This is a magnificent ride from Mexico (at least within the boundaries) to Canada and is done in a limited timeframe. This ride, like most rides, has several checkpoints. In the past, many organizations such as GWRRA, BMW, CMA, etc. have manned a 3 Flags checkpoint but never has our organization. In as much as Steve does this ride annually and has developed a rapport with the 3 Flags staff, he stepped up and offered TA to man one or two of the checkpoints for the 2012 ride. At this time, he had not spoken to any TA members but made a statement firmly believing there were members out there who were more than willing to assist and volunteer. After speaking to the 3 Flags committee members, the checkpoint in Winston, MT had already been assigned to the local CMA group, but the checkpoints at Monte Vista, CO and Lil America, WY were wide open and after a few phone calls, a TA group in CO under the leadership of Jim & Glenda Boggess was assigned and yours truly was assigned to Lil America, WY (no pun intended). I didnt know where to begin much less what was required of me at the checkpoint. A Mr. Dennis Even, the 3 Flags Checkpoint Coordinator, contacted me several times and assured me that upon reading all the material sent to me, the self-training would come easily. Surprisingly, it did. Now to 26 gather a team. I called several of my Chapter V (Woodland Roadrunners, Nor Cal) and in no time formed a committee consisting of Char Hunrath, Joe Spencer, Jack Everett and Dan Neubauer. As the event neared, Steve and I bought and compiled the supplies needed for the checkpoint. Steve took off for the starting point in Texas by way of our son Stephans place in Southern California as he was stationed at Pt. Hueneme. From there father and son headed to the starting point of the 2012 3 Flags Classic in El Paso, TX where they met up with several TA riders from Northern California. A few days later, Char and I prepped Steves truck loaded with supplies and headed for Lil America where we would meet Joe, Jack and Dan who rode their bikes. Unfortunately, due to a mechanical problem on Dans bike, he had to stop short within a few hours from leaving his home. While Joe and Jack stayed their first night in Wendover, NV, Chars and my destination for the night was Salt Lake City, UT for the sole purpose of dining at the nearby Cracker Barrel. (You know, there arent any Cracker Barrels in California.)

March 2013

The next day was a short drive to Lil America where we met up with Joe and Jack. Our first decision as a team was to decide where to put up the first 3 Flags sign. All agreed that the primary entryway would be the best. The second sign was placed in front of the building where the checkpoint location was held. Upon checking into our hotel rooms, we spoke to the manager and told her our purpose for being there. She said that due to a change in management, she did not have all the scheduled events. However, no worries, as she and her staff will accommodate us and boy did they ever! They went over and beyond! In fact and partially due to the uncertain weather predictions, instead of our initial location under the Lil America sign, we were given a comfortable conference room just right inside of the main lobby. Its a pretty good thing as it rained several times during our stay. We decided to do a partial setup prior to retiring for the evening.

confirmed their checkpoint stop time and were able to have many fun conversations with them and get to know them a little: from where theyre from, what type of bike they ride, if theyre affiliated with any group, etc. At this point, we were able to share a little bit of GWTA and offer them a membership leaflet and direct them to a chapter in their area.

As we were told by the Checkpoint Coordinator, most of these riders enjoy stopping at the checkpoints. Many times, its their only respite during the ride and since our checkpoint location was comfortable and inviting, many took the opportunity to take just a bit longer break. Several of the GWTA members riding came at the same time to include Steve and our son Stephan so we were all able to take a break and enjoy lunch together. Since 99% of the riders rode in during the first checkpoint day, our next and last day was cut short. Just as we were doing final loading of all the supplies onto the truck, one lonely rider came in. Fortunately as he was within the timeline set, we were able to check him in and mark off his passport for him. He was happy and we were happy to have accommodated him. Once completely packed, we headed for home of course, making one more pilgrimage stop at Cracker Barrel in Salt Lake City. 27

Up early the next morning for the beginning checkpoint day. We had our first rider come in shortly after opening and then a few trickled in to check-in, grab a bit of refreshment or breakfast at the cafeteria and to warm up from the chilly morning ride. As the day entered into mid-morning and afternoon, more riders filtered in and mostly in small groups. In checking the riders passports (furnished and specially made for this event by the SCMA organization), we TOURING NEWS

We discussed what a great time we had in meeting all the riders, the ride to and from, having some wonderful laughs and decided we would again be more than willing to man another checkpoint in the future if the opportunity arose. Thanks to the SCMA for giving us this fantastic opportunity! More information for the 2013 ride is in this issue.

Ever walk into a room with some purpose in mind, only to completely forget what that purpose was? Turns out, doors themselves are to blame for these strange memory lapses. Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame have discovered that passing through a doorway triggers whats known as an event boundary in the mind, separating one set of thoughts and memories from the next. Your brain files away the thoughts you had in the previous room and prepares a blank slate for the new locale. I wonder, does this go for refrigerator doors also? Thank goodness for studies like this. Its not our age, its that darn door! Was this in Marchs issue already?
