Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Instructions: Each Unit carries 12 marks. Answer all units choosing one question from each unit. All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only. Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted. Note: Heat and Mass Transfer Data Books to be allowed --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------UNIT-I 1. a) Explain the three modes of heat transfer and provide their general governing equations b) Derive the general heat conduction equation in cartesian coordinates

2. a) Sketch the four types boundary conditions applied for solving fin heat transfer b) Aluminum fins of rectangular profile are attached on a plane wall with 5 mm spacing. The fins have thickness 1 mm, length = 10 mm and the thermal conductivity K = 200 W/mK. The wall is maintained at a temperature of 200oC and the fins dissipate heat by convection into ambient air at 40oC, with heat transfer coefficient = 50 W/m2K. Find the heat loss UNIT-II 3. a) Discuss the different methods of determining heat transfer co-efficient in forced convection b) A thin 80 cm long and 8 cm wide horizontal plate is maintained at a temperature of 130o C in a large tank full of water at 70oC. Estimate the rate of heat input into the plate necessary to maintain the temperature of 130oC

OR

4. a) Explain the significance of Grashoffs number in natural convective heat transfer 6 b) A flat electrical heater of 0.4 m0.4 m size is placed vertically in still air at 20oC. The heat generated is 1200 W/m2. Determine the value of convective heat transfer co-efficient and the average plate temperature 6 UNIT-III 5. a) Define the terms i) Absorptivity ii) Reflectivity and iii) Transmissivity b) Differentiate between specular and diffuse reflections c) Derive Stefan-Boltzmanns law from Planks law
