GETTING YOUR SUGGESTIONS HEARD The Business Insiders Young Entrepreneur Council recently asked for best tips for measuring (and increasing) employee engagement. A founder of a national cancer organization responded with, Full transparency breeds accountability, which naturally transitions into ownership. When someone is invested in their role and feels pride and ownership, theyre much more likely to start suggesting improvements and working hard to better their work and the company. So what does that have to do with Toastmasters? Plenty! HollyAnn Carbino, VP of Education exclaimed. Evaluators are the communications backbone of Toastmasters. They invest themselves in listening to and watching a speaker and providing them with encouragement and, more importantly, constructive criticism on how the speaker could improve. This exercise in observation, contemplation, out-of-the-box thinking in some cases, and tact are vital to Toastmasters and can be immediately applied in the workplace to initiate improvements and make things better. Come see how Toastmasters can help you get your suggestions heard by visiting Washington County Toastmasters at our next meeting, Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at the Annex II Building, next to the Washington County Cornell Cooperative Extension Building, 415 Lower Main Street, Hudson Falls, NY. Washington County Toastmasters meets first and third Wednesdays at 7:00PM. For more info about WCT, please visit www.washingtoncountytoastmasters.org. Guests are ncouraged to arrive a few minutes early to settle in. Come join us, and bring a friend! Washington County Toastmasters is a communications club that allows for a friendly and trusting atmosphere so that all members can refine their skills in a supportive environment. And no other Toastmasters club has as much fun as we do! Info: www.washingtoncountytoastmasters.org. NEWS FROM THE DAIRY PRINCESS- Did you know that each morning 25 million kids go to school, and some of them are hungry? A large number of children start their day off on the wrong foot by not eating a healthy breakfast. Hunger effects students ability to learn and their attention span. We can change this with a program called Breakfast in the Classroom. The program provides students with a healthy breakfast each morning at school directly in their classrooms. Most school breakfast programs require students to eat in the cafeteria and this can make students feel singled out from others.Thats why this program makes sure that students eat in the classroom together with other students. Research shows that schools providing universal school breakfast (served free to all students) have higher breakfast participation, especially when breakfast is served in the classroom, resulting in a higher percentage of students consuming breakfast. These well-balanced, healthy meals include dairy products like milk, yogurt, or cheese that helps a student reach their goal of three dairy products every day. The nine nutrients in milk help to nourish their body as well as build their bones . The meal only takes about ten minutes to eat and provides plenty of benefits for the students. Students who eat breakfast have higher math and reading skills than students that dont eat breakfast. I eat breakfast each morning and know how important it is to my learning skills. I recently attended an event at the New York State Capital that supported and encouraged schools to add a Breakfast in the Classroom program. Please contact your school to encourage them to offer this great program.

WOLF POND STABLES CANCELS POW WOW. Claudia Wheeler, proprietor/owner of Wolf Pond Stables outside Stony Creek, has announced cancelation of the April 28 Pow Wow, planned to be a celebration of spring and Native American culture and foods. A late night fire on April 11 demolished the outbuilding that house, tools, farm equipment, many family items and, most important, the generator that supplied all power to the house and barns on this off-the-grid farm. Wheeler regrets missing this spring open house to welcome the public.

LUNCH, LEARN & PLAY FUNDING Plans are underway for the 2013 Lunch, Learn & Play summer enrichment program for area children at the Salem Courthouse Community Center. The six week program will commence on Monday, July 1 and run through Friday, August 9. Once again, the children will have the opportunity to participate in the American Red Cross swim program offered at Lake Lauderdale each morning returning to the CCC for a healthy, nutritious lunch and an afternoon filled with stimulating programs. There is no enrollment charge for LL&P, and the CCC is hard at work seeking the necessary funds to support this program. The organization was recently awarded $1,750 from the Stewarts Holiday Match. The CCC is grateful for this wonderful support knowing that it represents donations provided by community members as well as funding from the Stewarts Foundation. The CCC also has special events planned to raise additional funds for Lunch, Learn & Play. On Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, the CCC will host its second Salem Film Festival and Fashion Show starting at 7 pm. Chris Fronhofer and students from the Salem High School film club will premiere original short films. Following the films, there will be a fashion extravaganza under the direction of the talented Suzi Thomas. Both evenings will also feature a dessert auction as well. The proceeds from all events will support Lunch, Learn & Play. The CCC is located at 58 East Broadway directly across from the school. ANNUAL SPRING CHICKEN BBQ at the Argyle Firehouse (located on Rt. 40 north of the village) on Saturday, May 4th, from 4pm till gone. Our guest speaker, Cynthia Ford-Johnston, is the Superintendent of Keene Central School District, and owner of DaCy Meadow Farm, a 72 acre farm in Westport, New York raising pasture fed, hormone and antibiotic free heritage livestock. She and her husband Dave are localvores, connecting with the people who grow and sell their food and with each other, rebuilding their community economically, physically and spiritually. Cynthia will speak on the topics of school gardening and healthy eating. She will share information about the school garden project in Keene, how and why they became involved, the challenges and successes, and the evolution of the garden. She will explain how the garden compliments other projects in the school, and what it has meant to their cafeteria program. This years program topic is timely in the sense that many local schools have started gardening programs in recent years. For those considering a program this information shall provide a helpful guide. All are welcome to attend and encouraged to bring friends. Please RSVP Teresa Whalen, Chairperson at 518466-5497 or taawhalen@yahoo.com.
