Dixon, Mark. Identity Map. Discovery Identity. Web. 23 February. 2013. The article on identity talks about our identification. Dixon makes up a map comprised of all of the things that identify us and the way we see ourselves. It goes on explaining about the unique individuality of people and how that uniqueness is what makes up our identity. I believe that the article on identity goes well with the social basis of literacy section in Bartons Literacy book. In his book, he talks about the history of an individual person with literacy. I believe this fits with the article on identity because the way we have learned, our literacy history is our identity. Our literacy events and practices are our identity. The way we obtain knowledge or learn how to read and write also identifies us. In the Literacy book, Barton explains that every person, adult or child, has a view of literacy. Each one has a way of talking about literacy and depending on their views this can be seen through their actions (46). Now going back to the identity map, Dixon lists experience and knowledge as part of the core identities, which is why I believe that Bartons social basis of literacy goes well with the identity map. When reading both the article and the section in Bartons book, I realized that identity is a huge importance in literacy. Literacy has a history. Our individual life histories contain many events from early childhood onwards which the present is built upon (Barton, 47). This history is not only our literacy history, but also part of our identity. What we have done, who we are, how we learn and how it affects us is part of our core identity-experience. Thinking about it, the way I learned to read and write may differ from plenty of others. I learned to read and write in two different languages, others were only taught in one. History of course is not our only type of identity, but also our names, knowledge, roles, characteristics and so forth. The vary identity that I have online makes me unique because not everyone has the same identity. Not one single person is the same. They may look similar, but something will always be different and that is what their identity is. This section was very quite fascinating to me because not only did I do this for my class presentation, but also because it explores not only the digital identity, but also the identity and uniqueness of a person. Why does identity affect literacy? How does it affect it?
