This essay should focus on a theme or central tension in the work and how the author uses two

or three devices to express the theme. You can focus on imagery, metaphor, simile, symbol, connotation, tone, irony, word order, rhyme, rhythm, meter, enjambment, ambiguity, etc (any of the devices weve discussed or that are included in your textbook and class materials ), and explain how that device is used to express a particular theme. You should make clear what that central idea is in your introduction. For example, dont just refer to the theme of family, but describe what you think the poem says about family: for instance, the relationships between parent and child are idealized, or the unbreachable gap between the generations is the central tension, etc. In the body of the paper, show how the selected literary devices help get that idea/theme across. You should cite the text frequently. Strive to be original and develop an argument about a poem that represents something that is intriguing to you. Dont go for the obviouslook for a cohesive reading that is not immediately apparent. For example, look for the tensions and contradictions in the textwhat new readings might they offer? Think and write informally about the poem before you decide what you will argue in your essay.
