Abstract

The Boxer Uprising that was caused in Late Qing was the explosion of
beneficial conflicts, the contradiction of social value, and political crisis. It
played an important role to the development of the physical education of
Modern China. The focus of this study was on the exploration of the
followings:
1. The influence of the Boxer Uprisings origin and development in Late
Qing to Modern China.
2. The origin and development of physical education of Modern China in
Late Qing.
3. The influence of the Boxer Uprising to the physical education of Modern
China.
The method was used by the historical research in this study, and the
following results were based on a collection of historical information, which
have been arranged, classified, criticized, and explained.
1. The origin and development of physical education of Modern China
had had deep influences by western modern physical education. The
Westernization Movement made the physical education showed firstly in the
schools. The Reform Movement of 1898 made the construction of the of
physical education ideology in Modern China, and the physical education
ideology reflected the demand of National salvation and rescuing the crisis
and Strengthen the country and build up the body that was expected to
physical education in Modern China. In these processes, the western

missionaries, the oversea students, the athletic association in Late Qing, the
missionary school, and YMCA had deep influence to the expensive
spreading of western modern physical education in China.
2. The Boxer Uprising that was caused in Late Qing originated from the
Chinese traditional activity of martial art. Its main characteristics included
anti-imperialism and anti-foreign cultural invasion, and the second
characteristic was the revolution of anti- feudalism. It was resulted by the
invasions of powerful countries, the Qing dynastys cruel control and inner
contradiction, the conflict between foreign religion and Chinese traditional
culture, the widespread flood and drought, and the traditional agricultural
and economic system that was destroyed by the social economic
transformation. Its inner development experienced the processes of
Supporting Qing Dynasty and wiping out the foreigners, The
Eight-Power-Allied Forces, The Southeast Mutual Nonaggression
Movement, The Xin-Chou Treaty, and The Late Qing Reforms. It had
a deep influence to politics, economics, society, education, and culture of
Modern China.
3. The Boxer Uprising that was caused in Late Qing had deep influences
to the development of modern physical education in China.
In the aspects of social physical education, it promoted the form of the
Chinese modern physical education, the foundation of the athletic
association in Late Qing, and the proceeding of the YMCAs sports activities
in China.
In the aspects of school physical education, it helped the physical

education become the official curriculum, the execution of the teachers


training of physical education, and the missionary schools policy of an
educational service organization that take religious activities as the dominant
factors to promote the modern physical education.
In the aspects of physical education ideology: It promoted the advocate
military affairs spirit of the physical education ideology of an entire nation
in arms and the physical education ideology of national essence.
In the aspects of traditional martial art: It attributed to the decline of the
foundation of traditional martial art and made it merged into education and
the city life.
