Professional Growth Plan Name: _____Jeremy Finch_____________________________________ School/Semester: ______PSII___________________________ School Year: ______4th_______________________________ I want to incorporate a wider variety

of both formative and summative assessments into my classroom.

Goal 1:

Strategies Learn more strategies for assessment throughout my in-class portion of PSII especially from my Evaluation class. I will have one new assessment for every class. After I have used the same assessment over several music classes, I will reflect on its effectiveness. Time Line Prior to my practicum, I will gain more ideas and strategies for assessment.

Indicators and Measures of Achievement I will be reflecting on this in my journal to see if I am meeting this goal at the end of every lesson. I will also ask my TA to pay special attention to this area so that they can tell me how much I have grown (or need to grow) in this area. Resources My TA, University Consultant and other professors.

I will use 1 new formative assessment each My text book on assessment. class during my first week. Alberta Education has links to many During my second week, I will incorporate different resources that I can use. both 1 new formative assessment and 1 new summative assessment. Depending on how I am doing with my goal at this point, I will increase the number of new assessments from week 2.

Goal 2:

I would like to incorporate technology into my lessons more often at least three times a week when appropriate.

Strategies Look for technology that can be used in class besides Smartboard and then learn to incorporate it. I will also explore the use of Noteflight in my lessons.

Indicators and Measures of Achievement I will be able to keep track of how often I use technology in class through my reflections. I will also be deciding before the lesson whether the technology I intend on using is actually benefiting the students. This is important so that I do not

just use technology for the sake of using it. During my practicum, I will do my best to assess which lessons would be well suited for technology integration. Time Line By the beginning of practicum, I want to have a good handle on some other technologies that I can effectively use in my lessons. This means familiarizing myself with some of the technologies from our music technology assignment. I will start by incorporating one form of technology per week. Each week after, I will use technology increasingly more often. Week 2 will see two uses of technology. I will keep increasing like this throughout my practicum. My TA can also tell me if they think I could use more technology in my lessons. Resources The internet The website for my Technology in Education class from PSI. The list of different websites from our technology assignment as well as the handouts provided by my classmates.

Goal 3:

I will develop my awareness of behavioural consistencies/inconsistencies within the classroom.

Strategies Have an action plan for when things go awry. This can be built into my lessons. I will plan my classroom management into my lesson plans. This will enable me to anticipate when students may misbehave and allow me to prevent it in the first place. I can talk to my Teacher Associate prior to the start of practicum about the different coded kids in my classroom. Time Line For my first day, I will start by going over the established classroom expectations (I will add my own if I think of any and my TA permits it)

Indicators and Measures of Achievement Lessons going smoothly (not spending a lot of time dealing with classroom management issues). Students are engaged in the lesson and not zoning out. Consult with my TA and UC about what I am doing well and what I can improve upon. Having to go over my classroom expectations less each week.

Resources My TA and University Consultant. Chapter 12 from Ed Wasiak's book on Establishing a Positive Learning Environment.

During my first week, I will rehearse one procedure per class and formatively go over a random expectation of my students during my lessons. Ongoing: whenever a student violates one of my classroom expectations, I will consistently address it and ask them to remind me what the expectation was that they failed to meet.

Goal 4:

To maintain my health throughout my practicum, I will establish healthy sleep habits.

Strategies Start working on assignments and lesson plans earlier in the day. Create a schedule that I can consistently use to manage my time more effectively.

Indicators and Measures of Achievement This will be up to me to determine how well rested I feel each day. I will know if I'm meeting this goal simply by keeping track of what time I go to bed at. I will get 8 hours of sleep, 5 nights per week. To keep track of this, I will keep a chart that I will fill in each day. Resources My sleep chart. My bed. A timer on my phone that lets me know when I need to do certain things. I can have my sister send me text reminders.

Time Line This is something I will examine every day to make sure that my goal is being met.

Post Practicum Reflections: Goal 1: This goal was successfully completed. While I did not always get a
new assessment strategy every class, I feel that my strategies for both formative and summative assessment have grown significantly in diversity and quality. I feel significantly more knowledgeable about assessment in general than I did at the beginning of my practicum.

Goal 2: This goal was also completed. In fact, I went above and beyond
what I originally had aimed for. I regularly used music notation software for theory as well as an online keyboard to give choir students a visual idea of what a semitone looked like. My classroom did not have a Smartboard so I was forced to explore other technologies. I also regularly used Youtube to demonstrate what a piece sounds like or what a band/choir with good posture looks like. Another site I regularly used to sample music for students was JWPepper.

Goal 3: I completed this goal with varying degrees of success depending on

which class I was teaching. My Grade 9 band class was by far the worst for violating procedures and expectations and while I did rehearse them often, I did not always manage to react to them consistently. I was completely successful in regards to this goal when it came to all of my other classes. I implemented my procedures at the beginning and only occasionally had to rehearse them with the students. Since these procedures became so engrained in the students, I developed a highly efficient and positive classroom environment.

Goal 4: I kept a checklist of how many nights I managed to get 8 hours of

sleep. I was successful in getting at least 5 nights a week like this. I was only getting the bare minimum of 5 nights a week at the beginning but after the break I was able to get 8 hours of sleep almost every night since I had done so much of my planning over the break.
