Reports

Body - Text of the report. Word Wrap the automatic wrapping of text to the next line when there is no more space on the line. Insertion Point a mark that blinks on the screen. It appears where text will be entered. Font a design of a family of type. Times is the name of one family and Arial is another. Point Size the measurement of the height of a font. Finder The finder is the default file manager used on the Macintosh computer. It is responsible for the overall user management of files and software. Folder - container within a digital file system, in which groups of files and other folders can be kept and organized. Scroll Bar vertical and horizontal bars that allow a user to move through their documents quickly. Close Button the red button in the upper left corner of a document that allows a user to close the document without closing the program. Default - the settings in a software program when you first open the program. Example - 1 margins Margin - the blank space surrounding a document on all sides. Line Spacing SS - Single Space = 1 return = 0 blank lines DS - Double Space = 2 returns = 1 blank line TS - Triple Space = 3 returns = 2 blank lines QS - Quad Space = 4 returns = 3 blank lines Alignment - a software feature that allows you to change the horizontal position of text such as left, centered, or right. (Justification) Initial Caps - Capitalize the first letter of each major word in a title. Title - Subject of a report. Heading - In an academic report the heading is keyed on the left margin and includes the writers name, teachers name, class name, and the date in military style (day, month, year) Header - Repetitive information or text that is repeated at the top of each page of a document. Widow - The last line of a paragraph that has been carried to the top of another page. Orphan - The first line of a paragraph that has been left alone at the bottom of a page. Paraphrase - Information written in your own words. Short Quotation - A direct quote with 3 or fewer lines. (Set off by quotation marks) Long Quotation - A direct quote of 4 or more lines. (SS, indented 1 from left margin, no quotation marks) et al. means and others. Used in parenthetical references to indicate 4 or more authors. Standard Typing Paper - 8 1/2 X 11 6 lines of type per vertical inch (standard 12 pt. font) MLA Reports MLA - Modern Language Association Citation - usually the authors last name and page number in an MLA style report; use to give credit to the source of information. Works Cited - An alphabetical list of sources of information. In MLA style, the term Works Cited is used rather than the term Bibliography. Hanging Indent - The first line begins on the left margin and all following lines begin 1/2 inch from the left margin. Example: Works Cited.
