Prayers Approved by Pope Pius IX Magnificent Promises to Saint Bridget of Sweden Pope Benedict XV expressed himself as follows on the Revelations of St. Bridget: T he approbation of such revelations implies nothing more than, af ter mature examination, it is permissible to publish them f or the unit of the f aithf ul. T hough they dont merit the same credence as the truths of religion, one can, however, believe them out of human f aith, conf orming to the rules of prudence by which they are probable, and supported by suf f icient motives that one might believe in them piously. (Les Petits Bollandistes, tome XII) Question Must one recite the prayers everyday without interruption to obtain the privileges? Answer - One should miss saying them as f ew times as possible; but if f or a serious reason one is obliged to miss them, one doesnt lose the privileges attached to them, as long as one recites 5480 Prayers during the year. One must say them with devotion and concentrate on the words one pronounces. T hese prayers can serve as the Way of the Cross. Visitors to the Church of St. Paul at Rome can see the crucif ix, above the Tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, sculptured by Pierre Cavallini, bef ore which St. Bridge knelt when she received these 15 prayers f rom Our Lord. T he f ollowing inscription is placed in the church to commemorate the event: Pendentis, Pendente Dei verba accepit aure accipit et verbum corde Brigitta Deum. Anno Jubilei MCCCL. As St. Bridget f or a long time wanted to know the number of blows Our Lord received during His Passion, He one day appeared to her and said: I received 5480 blows on My Body. If you wish to honor them in some way, say 15 Our Fathers and 15 Hail Marys with the f ollowing Prayers (which He taught her) f or a whole year. When the year is up, you will have honored each one of My Wounds. Our Lord made the f ollowing promises to anyone who recited the 15 St. Bridget Prayers f or a whole year:

First Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus Christ! Eternal Sweetness to those who love T hee, joy surpassing all joy and all desire, Salvation and Hope of all sinners, Who hast proved that T hou hast no greater desire than to be among men, even assuming human nature at the f ullness of time f or the love of men, recall all the suf f erings T hou hast endured f rom the instant of T hy conception, and especially during T hy Passion, as it was decreed and ordained f rom all eternity in the Divine plan. Remember, O Lord, that during the Last Super with T hy disciples, having washed their f eet,

T hou gavest them T hy Most Precious Body and Blood, and while at the same time T hou didst sweetly console them, T hou didst f oretell them T hy coming Passion. Remember the sadness and bitterness which T hou didst experience in T hy Soul as T hou T hyself bore witness saying: My Soul is sorrowf ul even unto death. Remember all the f ear, anguish and pain that T hou didst suf f er in T hy delicate Body bef ore the torment of the Crucif ixion, when, af ter having prayed three times, bathed in a sweat of blood, T hou wast betrayed by Judas, T hy disciple, arrested by the people of a nation T hou hadst chosen and elevated, accused by f alse witnesses, unjustly judged by three judges during the f lower of T hy youth and during the solemn Paschal season. Remember that T hou wast despoiled of T hy garments and clothed in those of derision; that T hy Face and Eyes were veiled, that T hou wast buf f eted, crowned with thorns, a reed placed in T hy Hands, that T hou was crushed with blows and overwhelmed with af f ronts and outrages. In memory of all these pains and suf f erings which T hou didst endure bef ore T hy Passion on the Cross, grant me bef ore my death true contrition, a sincere and entire conf ession, worthy satisf action and the remission of all my sins. Amen Second Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! True liberty of angels, Paradise of delights, remember the horror and sadness which T hou didst endure when T hy enemies, like f urious lions, surrounded T hee, and by thousands of insults, spits, blows, lacerations and other unheard-of -cruelties, tormented T hee at will. In consideration of these torments and insulting words, I beseech T hee, O my Savior, to deliver me f rom all my enemies, visible and invisible, and to bring me, under T hy protection, to the perf ection of eternal salvation. Amen T hird Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Creator of Heaven and earth Whom nothing can encompass or limit, T hou Who dost enf old and hold all under T hy Loving power, remember the very bitter pain T hou didst suf f er when the Jews nailed T hy Sacred Hands and Feet to the Cross by blow af ter blow with big blunt nails, and not f inding T hee in a pitiable enough state to satisf y their rage, they enlarged T hy Wounds, and added pain to pain, and with indescribable cruelty stretched T hy Body on the Cross, pulled T hee f rom all sides, thus dislocating T hy Limbs. I beg of T hee, O Jesus, by the memory of this most Loving suf f ering of the Cross, to grant me the grace to f ear T hee and to Love T hee. Amen. Fourth Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Heavenly Physician, raised alof t on the Cross to heal our wounds with T hine, remember the bruises which T hou didst suf f er and the weakness of all T hy Members which were distended to such a degree that never was there pain like unto T hine. From the crown of T hy Head to the Soles of T hy Feet there was not one spot on T hy Body that was not in torment, and yet , f orgetting all T hy suf f erings, T hou didst not cease to pray to T hy heavenly Father f or T hy enemies, saying Father f orgive them f or they know not what they do. T hrough this great Mercy, and in memory of this suf f ering, grant that the remembrance of T hy Most Bitter Passion may ef f ect in us a perf ect contrition and the remission of all our sins. Amen. Fifth Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Mirror of eternal splendor, remember the sadness which T hou experienced, when contemplating in the light of T hy Divinity the predestination of those who would be saved by the merits of T hy Sacred passion, T hou didst see at the same time, the great multitude of reprobates who would be damned f or their sins, and T hou didst complain bitterly of those hopeless lost and unf ortunate sinners. T hrough this abyss of compassion and pity, and especially through the goodness which T hou displayed to the good thief when T hou sadist to him: T his day, thou shalt be with Me in paradise. I beg of T hee, O Sweet Jesus, that at the hour of my death, T hou wilt show me mercy. Amen. Sixth Prayer

Sixth Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Beloved and most desirable King, remember the grief T hou didst suf f er, when naked and like a common criminal, T hou was f astened and raised on the Cross, when all T hy relatives and f riends abandoned T hee, except T hy Beloved Mother, who remained close to T hee during T hy agony and whom T hou didst entrust to T hy f aithf ul disciple when T hou sadist to Mary: Woman, behold thy son! and to St. John: Son, behold thy Mother! I beg of T hee O my Savior, by the sword of sorrow which pierced the soul of T hy holy Mother, to have compassion on me in all my af f liction and tribulations, both corporal and spiritual, and to assist me in all my trials, and especially at the hour of my death. Amen Seventh Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Inexhaustible Fountain of compassion, Who by a prof ound gesture of Love, said f rom the Cross: I thirst! suf f ered f rom the thirst f or the salvation of the human race. I beg of T hee O my Savior, to inf lame in our hearts the desire to tend toward perf ection in all our acts; and to extinguish in us the concupiscence of the f lesh and the ardor of worldly desires. Amen Eighth Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Sweetness of hearts, delight of the spirit, by the bitterness of the vinegar and gall which T hou didst taste on the Cross f or Love of us, grant us the grace to receive worthily T hy Precious Body and Blood during our lif e and at the hour of our death, that they may serve as a remedy and consolation f or our souls. Amen Ninth Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Royal virtue, joy of the mind, recall the pain T hou didst endure when, plunged in an ocean of bitterness at the approach of death, insulted, outraged by the Jews, T hou didst cry out in a loud voice that T hou was abandoned by T hy Father, saying: My God, My God, why hast T hou f orsaken me? T hrough this anguish, I beg of T hee, O my Savior, not to abandon me in the terrors and pains of my death. Amen Tenth Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Who art the beginning and end of all things, lif e and virtue, remember that f or our sakes T hou was plunged in an abyss of suf f ering f rom the soles of T hy Feet to the crown of T hy Head. In consideration of the enormity of T hy Wounds, teach me to keep, through pure love, T hy Commandments, whose way is wide and easy f or those who love T hee. Amen Eleventh Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Deep abyss of mercy, I beg of T hee, in memory of T hy Wounds which penetrated to the very marrow of T hy Bones and to the depth of T hy being, to draw me, a miserable sinner, overwhelmed by my of f enses, away f rom sin and to hide me f rom T hy Face justly irritated against me, hide me in T hy Wounds, until T hy anger and just indignation shall have passed away. Amen Twelfth Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Mirror of Truth, symbol of unity, link of Charity, remember the multitude of wounds with which T hou was covered f rom head to f oot, torn and reddened by the spilling of T hy adorable blood. O great and universal pain which T hou didst suf f er in T hy virginal f lesh f or love of us! Sweetest Jesus! What is there that T hou couldst have done f or us which T hou hast not done! May the f ruit of T hy suf f erings be renewed in my soul by the f aithf ul remembrance of T hy passion, and may T hy love increase in my heart each day, until I see T hee in eternity, T hou Who art the treasury of every real good and every joy, which I beg T hee to grant me, O sweetest Jesus, in Heaven. Amen

sweetest Jesus, in Heaven. Amen T hirteenth Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Strong Lion, Immortal and Invincible King, remember the pain which T hou didst endure when all T hy strength, both moral and physical, was entirely exhausted, T hou didst bow T hy head, saying: It is consummated! T hrough this anguish and grief , I beg of T hee Lord Jesus, to have mercy on me at the hour of my death when my mind will be greatly troubled and my soul will be in anguish. Amen Fourteenth Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! Only Son of the Father, splendor and f igure of His substance remember the simple and humble recommendation T hou didst make of T hy Soul to T hy Eternal Father, saying: Father, into T hy Hands I commend My Spirit! And with T hy body all torn, and T hy Heart broken, and the bowels of T hy mercy open to redeem us, T hou didst expire. By this precious death, I beg of T hee O King of Saints, comf ort me and help me to resist the devil, the f lesh and the world, so that being dead to the world I may live f or T hee alone. I beg of T hee at the hour of my death to receive me, a pilgrim and an exile returning to T hee. Amen Fifteenth Prayer Our Father Hail Mary. O Jesus! True and f ruitf ul Vine! Remember the abundant outpouring of Blood which T hou didst so generously shed f rom T hy Sacred Body as juice f rom grapes in a wine press. From T hy Side, pierced with a lance by a soldier, blood and water issued f orth until there was not lef t in T hy Body a single drop, and f inally, like a bundle of myrrh lif ted to the top of the Cross, T hy delicate f lesh was destroyed, the very Substance of T hy Body withered, and the Marrow of T hy Bones dried up. T hrough this bitter Passion and through the outpouring of T hy precious Blood, I beg of T hee, O Sweet Jesus, to receive my soul when I am in my death agony. Amen Conclusion O Sweet Jesus! Pierce my heart so that my tears of penitence and love will be my bread day and night; may I be converted entirely to T hee, may my heart be T hy perpetual habitation, may my conversation be pleasing to T hee, and my the end of my lif e be so praiseworthy that I may merit Heaven and there with T hy saints, praise T hee f orever.
