North Korea

Term 1 project: Asia

North Korea is the peninsular of Asia. It has been divided in to two different parts, North Korea and South Korea. Here are some differences, facts and similarities about North Korea and Australia. North Korea is one of the most populated countries in the world yet it is a very small mass of land. The population of North Korea has risen by 12 million people from 1960 to 2011 .2011s population was 24 million ,451 thousand, 285 while back in 1960 the population was only 10.945 million. The Australian population for 2013 is 22, 620, 600 which is over 2 million less than North Korea and Australia is about 40 times bigger than North Korea. The capital of North Korea ,P'yongyang is located on the Taedong river in the West side of Korea .It is where most of the manufacturing and administration is done and where major products are made .It has several high monuments that were built when Korea was rebuilt which was after the war in 1953. In Korea there are still active volcanoes that erupted not many years ago. Some of them have unusual names such as Baekdu Mountain, Ch'uga-ryong, Hallasan and Ulleung island. The highest point in North Korea is Baekdu Mountain. It reaches up to 2,744 metres in height and is hundreds of years old. North Koreas national sport is Taekwondo. Taekwondo is a martial art that involves kicking, boxing, and blocking. It is a martial art that discipline and focus play a big part in and helps and teaches people with self- defence. Lots of different people do this sport and some have gone to the Olympics for sparring, which is where two people verse each other and kick them to gain points. The winner is the person who earns the most points. The Australian taekwondo sparrers for the London 2012 Olympics were Carmen Marton and Safwan Khalil. Safwan,a boy and Carmen, a girl. In 2008 Carman was a quarter finalist in the Beijing Olympics while Safwan just missed getting into the 2008 Olympic team. These two taekwondo experts are now married and met each other over ten years ago at the Junior World Championships. The most popular sporting event in North Korea is the annual Arirang Festival which is mass gymnastics and artistic performance. They also play soccer which is an English sport. The North Korean soccer team is called Korea DPR and went to the FIFA World Cup in England. The education system in North Korea is controlled by the government and they are one of the most literate countries in the world. They have a very high literacy rate of 99%. Australias adult literacy rate is 99% which is equal to a childs literacy rate in North Korea which is amazing because an adult has gone through University and maybe college too.

In Australia we have plenty of food, homes and shops too. We have clean streets nice cars and all sorts of wonderful things. but its not like that in North Korea. In North Korea their cars are dusty and ragged. Some people dont even have cars, they would have to walk around all day. The streets of North Korea are covered in rubbish and debris because of all the poverty there ,which Australia doesnt really have . The homes are usually very narrow and small except for people who are quite wealthy like the priminister, Kim Jong Un. Kim Jong Un took over North Korea after his father, Kim Sung. They are a communist government but Kim Jong un uses his communist power to stop people from voting. The main transport that people use to get to far away places is by a train or a plane. There are buses in North Korea and theres also trams. Water transportation is used with small or large boats that go along the Taedong river which is in Pyongyang and the Yalu river near Sinuiju. The inland waterways adding up to 2250 kilometres can only be used by small boats. The harbour loading capacity of fish and other food in 1990 was predicted to be 35 million tons a year, which is a lot of food. The jobs of North Korea consist of industrial, farming and information sectors. The industrial workers would usually be making cars. The information section would be telling tourists and people from all around the world about different places in and how to get there. They would talk a bit about the countries history to get the people and tourists to go to those places aswell. The farming is well, getting different animals (eatable of course) and feeding them up so they can be eaten by human beings, us. Currency in North Korea is called won and chon. We have cents while North Korea has chon and while we have dollars they have won. Chon starts with a c so thats cents, and then won would have to be dollars of course. Unlike ours they have 1 cents, 5 cents,10 cents,50 cents and 1 dollar coins (all in North Korean money) . So they miss out on 20 cents and we miss out on 1 cents. The North Korean weather is not like ours. Ours can be like theirs except ours would not be as strong as the ones they have in their country. North Koreas can be much worse. On the 30th of August 2012 there were Typhoons which were causing floods and landslides. And while that mayhem was happening ,people were still struggling to recover from earlier floods and other natural disasters. Apart from all of that negative information about North Korea they have some amazing creatures like the Siberian tiger and the Amur leopard. The Siberian tiger is very rare these days because of all the pollution to the environment and their habitat. Also people poach these wonderful animals for their skin to make coats, footwear and handbags just for money. Its the same with the leopard, it is a wonderful animal and there are many of them of them around but they are still getting poached just for their skins. But still not as much as the Siberian tiger.

There are also some non native animals like the Racoon which originated from America and also the Brown bear which comes from the north of America. Theres also the Asiastic Black bear which is a huge animal but its diet consists of small mammals, fruit and berries. Poaching is now illegal but some people ignore those laws but the government is trying their best to stop them. Thankyou for listening. Luca Brading: Green Team Captain
