GYMNASTICS MVP: Manning caps off career in perfect fashion

Brian Manning capped his brilliant high school career by placing rst in every event and easily winning the all-around with a score of 55.0 to lead Andover to the boys gymnastics state championship for the rst time since 1970. He set the state record in the vault (9.8) and naturally was named the states Most Outstanding Gymnast. He did everything possible for the team that day and we came up with a state title because of it, coach Steve Sirois said. He was an Eagle-Tribune All-Star last year when he nished second in the allaround (52.8) at States, winning the parallel bars and pommel horse. Manning, who has signed with topranked Penn State, overcame a broken tibia during his sophomore year. You wake up every morning in pain, but you push through it because you love the sport, Manning said this winter. You want to have the feeling of trying

Former football player. Coached by his father, who wrestled and played football at Harvard. Two-year letterman in lacrosse. North Andover resident.
Broke into lineup with a bang as a junior and kept improving. Soft spoken. Lets his action on the mat speak for him. Repeated as state champion and completed tremendous 43-5 season by placing fth in New England. Surprisingly quick on his feet. Rarely makes a mistake. 5-foot-6. Two-way football player, hopes to play in college. Older brother Mitchell also wrestled for Timberlane.
MVP: Perfect Monserrat reaches goal

Christian Monserrat is a tough guy to satisfy. After nishing second at New England two years in a row, he reached his goal of becoming a New England champion. Still, the Methuen junior was not entirely pleased. I should have had more points, said Monserrat. Central Catholic senior Pat Lacroix might disagree, however. He lost to Monserrat in the New England 126-pound nals, 5-2. It was only his fourth loss of the year, but third to Monserrat. Monserrats championship victory capped a remarkable season in which he finished 58-0, recording 36 pins, eight technical falls and six major decisions. Monserrat was at his best against the toughest foes. In his 17 wins in postseason tournaments, he had four pins, six technical falls and four major decisions. At All-State, he was named Outstanding Wrestler for the lighter weights. But its hard to say that he stepped it up much. This was his third straight unbeaten regular season and third straight All-State title. He has yet to lose outside of New England and will bring a stunning 155-2 record into his senior season. Hes well within range of John Sughrues school record 204 career wins. Ive still got a lot more I want to accomplish, said Monserrat, who has been training at the Barn in Danville for over ve years. I have to stay focused and keep working.

MVP: Centrals Kitchen enjoys special season

It will be interesting to see how the Central Catholic swim team adapts to the graduation of David Kitchen. After all, the senior was the personication of Most Valuable Player during the Raiders breakout 2012-2013 campaign. Kitchen substantially improved on a junior season that earned him Eagle-Tribune All-Star honors, highlighted by a super performance in a weather-delayed Division 1 state meet. After setting a school record in 2012 in the 200 IM sectionals and placing sixth in the states, Kitchen entered this years race as the third seed and sprinted to the championship. In doing so, he shattered his own record by 1.31 seconds by swimming a 1:58.01. I was just going for a personal best in the IM and I ended up winning the event, Kitchen explained at the time. At the MVC Meet, won 100 and 200 freestyles and swam the anchor on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Unbeaten in the MVC. Swam on fourth place 400 free relay team at 2012 States. Swims for Andover-North Andover Hurricanes. National Honor Society.

Set another school standard with her fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:57.04). Swam lead leg of a school-record 400 freestyle relay that came within 1/100th of a second of a New England record (3:31.50). Andover resident. From 2009-11 attended Western Academy of Beijing.

Despite having the Meet of Champions snowed out, Bergstrom made the most of his limited statewide opportunities. Moving to freestyle after placing in the buttery last year, the junior was runner-up in Division 1 in the 50 (22.76) by .05 seconds and fth in the 100 (50.36). Contributed strong legs to the Astros fth-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.

At 45-team Eastern Interscholastics in Philadelphia, Faller became an All-American as part of Phillips second in the 200 medley relay. His 46.77 leg in the 400 freestyle relay prelims was second-fastest 100 in school history. Captain. Ranks third in school history in 200 freestyle (1:42.49) and fth in 100 backstroke (52.36). Also plays water polo. North Reading resident. Hit by a car in October 2011 but fortunately wasnt hurt.

Wiped 1.86 seconds off her 100 freestyle standard, nishing as runner-up in 56.77. Posted personal bests in ve events this winter. Tricaptain. Skiing All-Stars
MVP: Windhams Taylor made lasting impression

In her rst and only season competing for Windham High School, senior Nicole Taylor wanted to make both a good rst and last impression. She did both. Taylor, who spent two winters competing for Waterville Valley Academy and another skiing for a high school in Colorado, excelled competing for the Jaguars this year. She won every regular season race and was the Division 2 state champion in both the slalom and giant slalom. She nished second at the Meet of Champions and was named to the New Hampshire team in the Eastern Regional championships. A competitive skier at Mount Sunapee since she was 6, Taylor is at her best on fast courses. Already ranked nationally, she wants to ski in college and is looking at schools as far away as Colorado and Alaska. Shes just a phenomenal skier but shes also just a great kid, said Windham coach Kellie Steward. She doesnt have the big ego that you see with a lot of the great skiers.

Haverhill High School, Freshman Guard An already-stacked Division 1 North sectional got a bit dicier for the Central Catholic boys when two Eagle-Tribune All-Star big men were deemed unavailable for the postseason due to injury. If the Raiders were going to make some noise, it would be without Doug Gemmell and Nick Cambio. For one Raider, junior Tyler Nelson, it meant strapping his teams offense on his back. Would Nelson, who averaged 14.9 points a game through the regular season in which the Raiders spread the ball around to four double-gure scorers, be up to the task? Four straight dominating wins and the accompanying North title would emphatically conrm that question for Nelson, our 2013 EagleTribune Boys Basketball Player of the Year. In a sectional that the St. Johns Prep or Lynn English guards were expected to dominate, Nelson clearly proved to be the class, averaging 24.8 a game when it mattered most. We put a lot on Tylers shoulders, said Raider coach Rick Nault. And he handled it incredibly well. I think we saw the competitor that he really is. Central Catholics Casey McLaughlin began the tournament by netting 34 points, including converting 12 of 12 free throws, and grabbing 16 rebounds vs. Woburn. She capped off the tournament with a brilliant 27-point effort in the Division 1 championship game, a 53-48 win over Holy Name. And that was against 6-2 junior, Brianna Frias, who already has committed to Providence. In the state semis vs. Braintree at the TD Garden, she went off for 18 points and 17 rebounds vs. two gifted young big girls who have scholarship offers to BC. McLaughlin averaged 23.2 points in six tourney games.
Holy Name coach Barry Finneron called the Stonehill recruit one special player. She averaged 17.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game this year en route to All-Scholastic honors. The senior from North Andover was all over the court: rebounding, ghting for jump balls, boxing out, scoring points, forcing steals, etc. McLaughlin helped Central win its rst state title since 2009 when star center/forward Katie Zenevitch was on the team. Cleared 6-4 twice, including to earn a fourth at Dartmouth Relays. Jumped 6-2 once. Went 6-0 to capture Division 1 state title. Had hand-timed bests of 7.8 in high hurdles and 6.7 in 55 meters. Ran on third place 4x200 team at Division 1 States. Lancer coach Matt Smith said, Hes very gifted, a great athlete. I think well be looking at school and division and potential state records in the high jump.

MVP: Another major honor for Methuens ODonnell

Mike ODonnell is making his fourth appearance on an Eagle-Tribune All-Star team and this is the third time as our MVP. He also won the award last winter and in cross country this past fall. On the heels of his MVP cross country season, the UConn recruit kicked it up another notch. He placed 10th in the New Balance Nationals mile in a time of 4:14.88, taking a second off his career best from last spring and placing him sixth all-time in our area. The versatile 5-10 senior also ran a career-best 1:55.25 800 in a December meet at BU to move up to a tie for eighth all-time in the region. The redheads 2:27.22 1,000 meters broke the 4-year-old Elite Meet record and earned him Athlete of the Meet honors. Only two other high schoolers had faster 1,000 times this winter, according to Track and Field News. ODonnell won Division 1 States in the mile in 4:18.01 and All-States in 4:15.81. Methuen coach Roger Fuller said, Hes always handled race situations well. He doesnt mind establishing the pace after the rst 200. He has that kick ... that 61 or 62-second last leg. Hes physically strong.

Threw 51-9 3/4 vs. Lowell. His next best throw was 51-1 for third at Division 2 States. Placed 13th at All-States (49-1) and 11th at Elite Meet (49-8 1/4). Earned Eagle-Tribune AllStar honors last spring when he uncorked an arealeading 52-8 1/2 throw. Threw the javelin 164-1 last spring. Captain in football, indoor track and outdoor track.
