COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE, CATALOG DESCRIPTION, CREDITS: ENC 0015 DEVELOPMENTAL WRITING I (*) (4 CREDITS) This is a lecture/laboratory course with emphasis on grammar usage, capitalization, sentence structure, and paragraph development. This course is required for students entering the College Preparatory Program who have a basic background of the language but need to practice usage, mechanics, and organizational skills. Successful completion of this course requires a grade of C or better. (*) Preparatory credit only, does not count toward a degree or certificate

LEARNING OUTCOMES Identify and compose complete sentences with varied sentence structures and avoid sentence fragments, comma splices, and fused sentences. WDECU 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 Demonstrate a basic awareness of purpose and audience by choosing appropriate words and phrases and by using standard sentence syntax and grammar skills. WDECU 21, 24, 25 Identify and appropriately use commonly confused words and phrases. WDECU 23 Utilize prewriting, drafting, revision, and editing techniques. ASSESSMENTS Students will demonstrate competency by identifying subjects and verbs in clauses, by passing objective tests, and by writing accurate, simple, coordinated, and subordinated sentences. Students will demonstrate competency by passing objective tests on subject-verb agreement, verb forms and tense, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs and their degree forms, and by composing sentences and paragraphs on given subjects. Students will demonstrate competency by passing objective tests on spelling, capitalization, and punctuation rules and by composing sentences and paragraphs on given subjects. Students will demonstrate competency by passing objective tests on commonly confused words and phrases and by composing sentences and paragraphs on given subjects. Students will demonstrate competency by submitting evidence of writing process, to include final versions, as part of a common departmental course assessment. Both in class and out of class, students will compose paragraphs on a variety of topics, each of which will be assessed through the common departmental rubric.
