Historical Profile

The Arts and Crafts Movement first came to America from 19th century England, after beginning there as a progressive movement which sought to preserve the traditions of hand craftsmanship that were rapidly disappearing in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. Influential English designer William Morris , considered the father of the movement, fostered the preservation of many threatened craft traditions through the production of well-designed, handmade goods such as furniture, textiles and wallpapers. His work inspired similar ventures internationally. When the Victorian era officially ended with the coronation of Edward VII in 1901, the Edwardian era replaced it with a hopeful fresh start for the new century. American architects and designers, while fully aware of European design trends, began to forge uniquely American styles: the innovative designs of Frank Lloyd Wright and the midwestern Prairie School , the east coast Colonial Revival and its western counterpart, the Mission Revival . The English Arts and Crafts movement directly inspired Gustav Stickleys Craftsman Style , which celebrated durability, simple forms and functionality. The vogue for rusticity was best expressed by the popular California Bungalow. Elements of all the current design trends could be found combined in the interiors of the uniquely American Foursquare. As in the Victorian era, wallpaper continued to be a popular and accessible vehicle for the expression of the latest design trends, and American interiors exhibited an enthusiastic admixture of Glasgow roses, Viennese geometrics, Art Nouveau florals and Craftsman-inspired motifs. The color palette of the period reflected these diverse sources, from the natural shades of olive, khaki, and forest green in the Craftsman taste, to pale and muted watercolor shades of the Glasgow School.

Early 20th Century Interiors

Top left: Apple Tree Frieze is extended in height by the use of Apple Tree Border top and bottom. Border and corner blocks are used to panelize the wall. Right: The frieze area is panelized; the width between panels determined by the box beams above. Below the picture rail Apple Tree Frieze has been decoupaged over Glenwood wallpaper with a companion border above the wainscot. This wall combination may be adapted for use in large frieze areas.

Hanging tip: Creating the hand-stencilled look.

Bottom left: It was common to use a large scale floral pattern, such as Briar Rose above a wainscot. Right: The vertical nature of Thistle makes it ideal for use in vertical panels. Note: in both cases, large florals are balanced by a small scale geometric, Avalon.

Arts & Crafts rusticity and Edwardian Classicism were parallel trends in the early 20th century interior. It was especially common in the American Foursquare to see Craftsman-style box beams, inglenooks and high wooden wainscots juxtaposed with Colonial Revival-style classical columns, cornices and Palladian windows. In general, rooms of the period expressed a horizontal emphasis, in contrast to the vertical thrust of the preceding Victorian era. Gone was the standard Victorian 18" frieze, replaced by a broad variety of frieze heights and decorative treatments. High wooden wainscots, often inset with vertical panels, became a characteristic feature of dining rooms. Panelization could be found both on walls and in broad frieze areas. In simple interiors that lacked elaborate woodwork, paper borders and panels were sometimes used to create the popular wall divisions of the period. Box beams became a popular ceiling treatment, and all-over ceiling papers, such as faux gilded burlap and mica geometrics, maintained popularity. The elaborate ornamental ceilings of the previous century, however, virtually disappeared from the domestic interior, replaced with far simpler treatments.

Stencilled friezes usually are centered on each wall, as the distance between each stencil can be subtly adjusted. This effect can be duplicated using either Oakleaf Frieze or Glasgow Frieze by cutting out the areas outside the oak leaves (or rose bushes) and pasting them back as extenders at the corners of the room.

The combination of restrained Art Nouveau motifs and Classically-inspired symmetry was typical of the Edwardian style. Striped wallpapers were popular in both Edwardian and Colonial Revival interiors. Above: Below the picture rail, Glasgow Panels are hung at the corners of a wall covered with Springfield Stripe wallpaper, and bounded by Vienna Check Border. Above the picture rail, Glasgow Frieze is panelized at the corners to reflect the wall panels, and floated on a background of Avalon to fill a wide frieze area.

Edwardian Classicism in an American Foursquare

The low intensity of early light bulbs guaranteed the popularity of reflective ceilings in electrified homes. Left: Brilliantly reflective mica (Circlet Ceiling) was used to lighten ceilings. The ceiling might be framed with narrow borders, sometimes with elaborated corners. Right: The gilded Faux Burlap Ceiling provided the ultimate in richness; combined with Tiffany-style lighting the effect was ethereal. Borders were used to enrich the panels created by box beams.
