Question Paper
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES: Time allowed : 2 hours Maximum Marks: 60 1. 2. 3. 4. Answer any three questions Mark allocation is indicated against each question Questions must be answered in the answer booklet provided by the School. Additional answer booklets can be used.

Answer any three of the following questions: 1. (a) With neat diagrams explain the phenomenon of armature reaction in a d.c machine and how this effect can be neutralised. Justify 5 Marks (b) A separately excited generator when running at 1200 r.p.m supplies 200A at 125V to a circuit of constant resistance. What will be the current when the speed is dropped to 950 r.p.m if the field current is unaltered: Ra=0.04? Total drop at brushes is 2V, ignore changes in armature reaction. 4 Marks (c) Explain different constraints in Economic Load dispatch and explain economic dispatch including losses. 7 Marks (d) Explain dynamic programming using flow chart 4 Marks

2. (a) Explain the use of brushless exciter with neat diagram and disadvantages of slip rings 5 Marks (b) Derive E.M.F equation of an alternator .Consider the 3 phase, star connected alternator having 2 coil sides per slot, 16 turns per coil. Armature has 288 slots on its periphery. When driven at 250 r.p.m it produces 6600V between the lines at 50Hz. The pitch of the coil is two slots less than full pitch. Calculate flux per pole 5 Marks (c) Consider two generating plant with same fuel cost and generation limits. These are given by. 0.8 2 100 MW P 500 MW, i = 1,2

For a particular time of a year, the total load in a day varies as shown in Fig. Also an additional cost of Rs. 5,000 is incurred by switching of a unit during the off peak hours and switching it back on during the during the peak hours. Determine whether it is economical to have both units operational all the time Page - 1
